iTunes Top 100 Artists: #83-90

My latest desktop computer arrived in late 2007, at which point I transitioned all of my music off of my laptop. 2 iPods, 2 iPhones, and an iPad later, that computer is still my main repository of music, with iTunes updating its stats every time I listen to something.

Having already gone through cassette tapes and CDs, and digital music, it’s time to roll everything up with the Top 100 artists that I’ve listened to as of 8/21/2013, according to iTunes. Today we look at the the the next batch, numbers 83-90, which includes a few 90s alternative classics.

#83: Katy Perry

iTunes stats: 29 plays

A pretty high placing for the young Ms. Perry considering it is from only 1 song.

#84: Red Hot Chili Peppers

iTunes stats: 28 plays

The pioneers of alternative rock used 6 songs to make up this total.

#84: The Beach Boys

iTunes stats: 28 plays

The pioneers of surf rock used 5 songs to make up this total.

#84: Oasis

iTunes stats: 28 plays

Only 3 songs propelled the British band to this total.

#84: The Breeders

iTunes stats: 28 plays

The Deal sisters get on the board thanks to only 2 songs.

#88: Rancid

iTunes stats: 27 plays

3 songs put the punk band on the list.

#88: U2

iTunes stats: 27 plays

6 is the magic number for the fellows from Ireland.

#88: Roxette

iTunes stats: 27 plays

5 songs make up the total for the Swedish duo.

Mix Tape Monday – May 2005

After my tape deck crapped out in 1997, I was stuck listening to either the radio or full albums in whatever order the artist intended.  That all changed in 2001, when the new-fangled MP3 technology got combined with my new CD burner.

This was the last CD of psudeo-new music that I burned.  Fall of 2005 was consumed with other activities and that Christmas, I got a Sirius satellite radio, at which point I pretty much stopped using the CD player in the car.  In fact, the CDs that were in the 5 disc changer at the time stayed there untouched for so long that, when I tried to put in something different, the new discs wouldn’t work.

Tom Petty – I Won’t Back Down

I just now realized that this was from Tom Petty’s solo album and was not a Heartbreakers track.

Foo Fighters – Best Of You

The latest from the Foo Fighters was the first single from In Your Honor.

Black Eyed Peas – Don’t Phunk With My Heart

The less successful follow up to the monster hit Let’s Get It Started.

Def Leppard – No Matter What

A cover of the old Badfinger song done as a bonus track for their latest best-of release.

DJ Jazzy Jeff & The Fresh Prince – Summertime

The Grammy winner for Best Rap single of 1991.

Ramones – Blitzkreig Bop

The debut single for the seminal American punk band.

Terror Squad – Lean Back

Spent three weeks atop the Billboard Hot 100 charts in August of 2004.

Mix Tape Monday – March 2002

Mix Tape Monday – Volume 17

Between 1989, my sophomore year of high school, and 1995, my fourth year of college, I put together a nearly 20 volume collection of mix tapes, containing my favorite songs that I had gathered either from the radio, a cassette tape, or (eventually) CD. I thought it would be a fun exercise to look back at all 20 volumes and which of my “favorite” songs I still listen to today.

Volume 17 picks up in early 1995 and the second semester of my junior year and takes us into early summer.  At this point, it is nearly all alternative, with just one hip-hop breakthrough.

Goodbye, iPhone 3G – Music Edition

As I wait for tomorrow’s delivery of my new iPhone 4S, it is time to say goodbye to the 3G that has been my trusty companion for nearly the past 3 1/2 years.  We’ve traveled the world together (well, at least Canada and the UK) and have listened to a lot of music.  Here is every song (all 1597 of them) I’ve listened to on the phone, with some (ok, very little) bonus commentary!

30 Day Music Challenge Day 06 – A Song That Reminds You Of Somewhere

During the summer of 2005, I took a class as part of my Master’s program at DePaul that involved a trip to Italy for 10 days.  On one of our free days, we took a trip to Venice for the day.  Afterwards, after dinner and some (ok, a lot of) wine, we were heading back to our home base near Lake Como when the bus driver slipped in an Oasis CD.  We listened to, and sang along with, Champagne Supernova at least 3-4 times.  It was the type of thing that couldn’t have been planned and is one of my lasting memories of the trip.
