iTunes Top 200 Artists: #191-195

Music.  It is a powerful thing that brings people together, creates memories, and evokes emotions.  It is the universal language that speaks to the soul.  It forms the soundtrack of our lives.

It has now been five years since we last counted down the Top 200 artists in my iTunes library, featuring the songs I have listened to the most since 2007.  It is time to do so again, seeing which performers still resonate and if any newer ones have joined the fray.  So, without further ado, here are my most listened to artists, based on number of plays as of January 1, 2026.

We kick things off today with our first batch of ten artists, covering the genres of pop, rock, and hip-hop.  We only have one performer who is a newcomer, at least as a solo artist, to the list this week.

#195: Naughty By Nature
iTunes stats: 59 plays
Previous ranking: #182

Formed in East Orange, New Jersey in 1986, the Grammy award winners added eleven new plays to the two seminal rap tunes that grace my collection.

#195: Fall Out Boy
iTunes stats: 59 plays
Previous ranking: #194

The local band, founded in 2001 and named after a character from The Simpsons, picked up fourteen new listens spread across the two songs in my collection, one of which spent the 2015 season as the running-onto-the-field music for the White Sox.

#195: Stan Bush
iTunes stats: 59 plays
Previous ranking: #178

The star of the TransFormers: The Movie soundtrack has two tracks comprise his total, which increased by ten listens over the past five years.

#195: The Cure
iTunes stats: 59 plays
Previous ranking: #188

One of the originators of the Goth Rock scene of the early 80s, The Cure, founded in 1976 in England, use two tracks to make up their total, which increased by thirteen over five years ago.

#195: The Juliana Hatfield Three
iTunes stats: 59 plays
Previous ranking: #197

After breaking up with the Blake Babies, Juliana Hatfield put together this band in 1993 before going solo, which rises two slots on this chart after garnering fifteen new listens across its two tracks, including one from the Reality Bites soundtrack.

Fifty Years Of Music – 2023

Fifty years ago, I made my first appeared on the Earth.  In celebration, we are going to take a look at the year-end Billboard Hot 100 singles chart for each year of my life and see what songs resonated with me at the time and if they continue to do so to this day.

We conclude our look back at the music of my lifetime with 2023, the 50th incarnation of the chart during my lifetime.  Being an old, I have little knowledge of nearly all of the songs, as I am not really the target demographic, of pop music today, with only Taylor Swift and the handful of Christmas classics which have made the list breaking through.  Only 17 of the Hot 100 are familiar to me now, with only seven of them appearing in my collection in one way or another.

#84: Wham! – Last Christmas
iTunes stats: N/A

Originally released in the UK in 1984, the duo’s Christmas classic was finally released in the US in 2014 and has charted regularly every December since.

#71: Burl Ives – A Holly Jolly Christmas
iTunes stats: 0 plays

The holiday classic, featured in the 1964 Rankin-Bass special Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer, makes the year end chart for the second consecutive year.

#68: Bobby Helms – Jingle Bell Rock
iTunes stats: 0 plays

Arguably the best-known version of the song, it has now charted in twelve different years since 1958

#60: Brenda Lee – Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree
iTunes stats: 0 plays

The song was first recorded by Lee when she was 13 years old.

#55: Mariah Carey – All I Want for Christmas Is You
iTunes stats: 0 plays

One of the few modern additions to the holiday canon, it has placed on the year-end chart for five years running.

#32: Taylor Swift – Lavendar Haze
iTunes stats: 4 plays

The second single from Swift’s tenth studio album, it debuted and peaked at #2, giving Swift sole possession of the top ten

#27: Taylor Swift – Karma
iTunes stats: 2 plays

It reached #2 on the Hot 100 and became Swift’s record-tying 10th and 11th number-one singles on the Adult Top 40 and Pop Airplay charts, respectively.

#18: Taylor Swift – Cruel Summer
iTunes stats: 6 plays

Despite being from Swift’s seventh studio album, released in 2019, it was first released as a single in 2023 after going viral in conjunction with the Era’s Tour.  It spent four non-consecutive weeks at #1, becoming her tenth chart-topping single.

#4: Taylor Swift – Anti-Hero
iTunes stats: 14 plays

Spending eight weeks at the top of the Hot 100, it helped push Swift past Madonna for the most top ten hits by a female artist.

#2: Miley Cyrus – Flowers
iTunes stats: N/A

The second #1 hit for Cyrus, it spent eight non-consecutive weeks atop the Hot 100.

Fifty years ago, I made my first appeared on the Earth.  In celebration, we are going to take a look at the year-end Billboard Hot 100 singles chart for each year of my life and see what songs resonated with me at the time and if they continue to do so to this day.

We have reached our penultimate entry, looking back at the music of my lifetime with 2022, the year I turned 48.  Only seven of the Hot 100 are familiar to me, with five of them appearing in my collection in one way or another.

#89: Burl Ives – A Holly Jolly Christmas
iTunes stats: 0 plays

Released in 1964, it charted for the first time in 2017 and continues to appear every December.

#86: Bobby Helms – Jingle Bell Rock
iTunes stats: 0 plays

Peaking at #3 in 2022, it was first released in 1957 and charted for the first time in 1958.

#80: Brenda Lee – Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree
iTunes stats: 0 plays

Originally released in 1958, it reached #2 in late November of 2022.

#76: Taylor Swift – All Too Well (Taylor’s Version)
iTunes stats: 2 plays

The longest #1 song in Hot 100 history, it was her 30th top ten hit, making her just the sixth artist to achieve that feat.

#65: Mariah Carey – All I Want for Christmas Is You

Reached the top of the charts for the fourth consecutive year.

#23: Kate Bush – Running Up That Hill
iTunes stats: N/A

Originally released in 1985, its use in the fourth season of Stranger Things returned it to the charts where it reached #3, bettering its earlier chart position of #30.

#17: Gayle – ABCDEFU

The singer’s major label debut, it peaked at #3 and was nominated for a Grammy.

Fifty years ago, I made my first appeared on the Earth.  In celebration, we are going to take a look at the year-end Billboard Hot 100 singles chart for each year of my life and see what songs resonated with me at the time and if they continue to do so to this day.

We continue our look back at the music of my lifetime with 2021, the year the world started to recover from the effects of the novel corona virus and I celebrated my 47th birthday.  Only three of these songs are familiar to me today, but all of them appear in my collection in one way or another.

We continue our look back at the music of my lifetime with 2020, the year a global pandemic shut down the world in a way never seen before and that I celebrated my 46th birthday.  Only twelve of these songs remain familiar to me today, with half of them appearing in my collection in one way or another.

Having spent three weeks at #1 to end 2019 and start 2020, it took fourteen years after its initial release to reach the top of the Hot 100.

Fifty years ago, I made my first appeared on the Earth.  In celebration, we are going to take a look at the year-end Billboard Hot 100 singles chart for each year of my life and see what songs resonated with me at the time and if they continue to do so to this day.

We continue our look back at the music of my lifetime with 1996, the year I should have graduated from college had I settled on a major earlier, went back to the bank for a second summer, returned to Purdue for my fifth and final year of college (at least for now), and turned 22.  Only 33 songs on the Hot 100 are familiar to me today, with 24 of them appearing in my collection in one way or another.

#99: Hootie & The Blowfish – Only Wanna Be with You

Returning for its second straight year-end chart, the track peaked at #2 on the Album Rock Tracks chart and #6 on the Hot 100.

#98: Los del Rio – Macarena

Topping out at #15, it was the lead single from the group’s second album in Europe and the second single in the US.

The band’s lone top ten hit, it went to #10.

#81: Toni Braxton – Un-Break My Heart

Spending eleven total weeks atop the Hot 100, it ruled the charts from December of 1996 through mid-February of 1997.

#76: Sophie B. Hawkins – As I Lay Me Down

Hitting the year-end chart for the second time, it peaked at #6.

#75: Sheryl Crow – If It Makes You Happy

The lead single from Crow’s sophomore album, it reached #10 and remains her most recent top ten solo release.

The band’s first charting single in the US, it spent 29 weeks on the Hot 100, topping out at #23.

#67: BoDeans – Closer to Free

Hitting #16 and becoming the band’s biggest hit, it was used as the theme song for Party of Five.

Fifty years ago, I made my first appeared on the Earth.  In celebration, we are going to take a look at the year-end Billboard Hot 100 singles chart for each year of my life and see what songs resonated with me at the time and if they continue to do so to this day.

We continue our look back at the music of my lifetime with 1994, the year I settled on a major, finished my second year of college, started my third year, and turned 20.   Only 57 songs on the Hot 100 remain familiar to me today, with 42 of them appearing in my collection in one way or another.

#97: Haddaway – What Is Love

The debut single from the singer managed to make the year-end charts two years running despite peaking at #11 in the fall of 1993.

#95: General Public – I’ll Take You There

Featured in the film Threesome, this cover of the classic by The Staple Singers reached #22 on the Hot 100.

#92: Melissa Etheridge – I’m the Only One

The lead single from Etheridge’s fourth studio album, it was re-released following the success of Come to My Window and managed to surpass it, hitting #8.

#91: Bon Jovi – Always

The requisite new song added to the greatest hits album, it became the band’s eleventh, and final, top ten hit, topping out at #4.

#89: The Four Seasons – December, 1963 (Oh What a Night)

This remix spent 27 weeks on the chart, matching its original run across 1975 and 1976, and peaked at #14.

#85: Ini Kamoze – Here Comes the Hotstepper

Spending two weeks at #1 in December of 1994, it was the only single from the Jamaican artist to break into the Top 40.

#82: Queen Latifah – U.N.I.T.Y.

Confronting the disrespect of women in society and slurs against women in hip-hop culture, the song remains Latifah’s biggest pop hit, reaching #23.

#77: Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers – Mary Jane’s Last Dance

Petty’s first Top 20 hit since 1989, it topped out at #13 on the Hot 100 and topped the Album Rock Tracks chart for two weeks.

Fifty Years Of Music – 1993

Fifty years ago, I made my first appeared on the Earth.  In celebration, we are going to take a look at the year-end Billboard Hot 100 singles chart for each year of my life and see what songs resonated with me at the time and if they continue to do so to this day.

We continue our look back at the music of my lifetime with 1993, the year I completed my first year of college, started my second year of college, moved out of my childhood home, and turned 19, in that order.  My musical landscape was continuing to change, as I navigated the different music I was exposed to between the middle of Indiana and the Chicagoland area.  A whopping 86 of the Hot 100 are familiar to me now, with 51 of them appearing in my collection in one way or another.

#100: Def Leppard – Two Steps Behind

Featured on the soundtrack to Last Action Hero, the acoustic ballad peaked at #12 on the Hot 100.

#97: Tony! Toni! Toné! – Anniversary

Reaching #10, it was the second single from the group’s third studio album.

Topping out at #17, the track earned Sting a Grammy in 1994.

Fifty Years Of Music – 1992

Fifty years ago, I made my first appeared on the Earth.  In celebration, we are going to take a look at the year-end Billboard Hot 100 singles chart for each year of my life and see what songs resonated with me at the time and if they continue to do so to this day.

We continue our look back at the music of my lifetime with 1992, the year I graduated high school, went away to college, and turned 18, in that order.  My musical landscape was changing, as I had gotten my first CD player for Christmas in 1991 and my tastes were moving somewhat away from pop music and toward alternative rock thanks in part to Q101, who switched formats during the year.  I also spent part of the year in the middle of Indiana, which didn’t always feature the same types of artists that I was exposed to back home in the Chicagoland area.  At the same time, Billboard’s was changing as well, with the Hot 100 switched to electronic sales and radio airplay metrics rather than written reports at the end of November in 1991.  A whopping 70 of the Hot 100 are familiar to me now, with 50 of them appearing in my collection in one way or another.

#98: Def Leppard – Let’s Get Rocked

The band’s first release after the death of guitarist Steve Clark, the first single from their first album in over four years hit #15 on the Hot 100 and topped the Album Rock Tracks chart.

#96: Amy Grant – I Will Remember You
iTunes stats: N/A

Peaking at #20, it became the first single from Grant’s ninth studio album to not break the top ten.

#93: En Vogue – Free Your Mind
iTunes stats: N/A

After spending 16 weeks in the Top 40, topping out at #8, the song garnered two Grammy nominations in 1993, for Best Rock Vocal Performance by a Duo or Group and Best Music Video, Short Form.

#91: Amy Grant – That’s What Love Is For

The only song from Grant’s ninth studio album to be released to both pop and Christian radio, it reached #7 on the Hot 100.

The third single from the group’s debut album, it peaked at #7 on the charts.

#86: The KLF – Justified and Ancient

Released in late 1991, the song became an international hit, reaching #2 on the US dance chart while stalling out at #11 on the Hot 100.

Fifty Years Of Music – 1991

Fifty years ago, I made my first appeared on the Earth.  In celebration, we are going to take a look at the year-end Billboard Hot 100 singles chart for each year of my life and see what songs resonated with me at the time and if they continue to do so to this day.

We continue our look back at the music of my lifetime with 1991, the year I broke up with my first girlfriend, finished my junior year of high school, started my senior year, and got my first job.  Z95 flipped to Hot 94.7 before going away altogether and a new rock station, 103.5 The Blaze, entered the Chicago radio scene, providing the majority of the soundtrack of that year.  At 82 songs, we have broken past 80% of the Hot 100 that remain familiar to me today for the first time, with 62 of them appearing in my collection in one way or another.
