Which Way To Sacramento

As the 2024 baseball season draws to a close, so too does the era of Major League Baseball in Oakland.  The A’s, who first moved to Oakland prior to the 1968 season, will be spending the next three (or four) years based out of Sacramento while waiting for a stadium to be built in Las Vegas.  I’ve seen the A’s at least 35 times over the years, first at some unknown date at old Comiskey Park and most recently at Guaranteed Rate Field in mid-September.  In between, I saw them at two other ballparks, including trips to their home ballpark in 1999 and 2008.

Team Name Won Loss Winning Pctg
Chicago Cubs 3 0 1.000
Detroit Tigers 1 0 1.000
Chicago White Sox 16 14 0.533
Oakland Athletics 15 20 0.429
Baltimore Orioles 0 1 0.000

The A’s, who are going location-less name-wise while they are based in Sacramento, will make their first visit to Chicago in April.  They will open their stay in Sacramento against the Cubs on March 31, while the White Sox make their first visit at the end of April.

T Minus 5

Following last night’s loss to the A’s, the White Sox now have 115 loses. just five away from the modern record set by the expansion Mets in 1962.  This was the 18th time they’ve been shut out and their 16th consecutive loss at Guaranteed Rate Field. They would have to go 10-4 over their remaining 14 games to avoid tying the record.  They have won ten games since June 29.

FB10: Week 32

A small decline thanks to what may have been my first infection with COVID.  The week got off to a good start on Sunday, finishing with 5100 steps thanks to a trip to Guaranteed Rate Field.  Things fell off a bit on Monday, coming in with 4300 steps.  Despite a positive test on Tuesday night, I managed to increase my total, needing 35 more steps to reach 4400.  An inconclusive test on Wednesday morning convinced me it was ok to head out for a team lunch, but I finished with only 3000 steps and another positive test at night.  A slight improvement on Thursday pushed me up to 3600 steps.  Despite a negative test on Friday, I managed only 2700 steps.  A second negative test on Saturday led to another trip to the ballpark, gathering 5400 steps as I watched the White Sox tie their franchise record for losses in a season.

A nice improvement this week thanks in part to multiple baseball games.  The week got off to a decent start on Sunday, coming only 8 steps shy of 4400.  Things fell off a bit on Monday, as I needed 21 more steps to reach 3800.  Tuesday bounced back up, surpassing 4300 steps.  A trip to Wrigley Field on Wednesday night left me a mere 7 steps away from 6400.  Another dip on Thursday dropped me back down to 2400 steps.  There was a big improvement on Friday thanks to Elvis night at Guaranteed Rate Field, which left me 17 steps short of 6500.  A slow day of recovery after on Saturday saw me needing 27 additional steps to get to 3300.

FB10: Week 29

A bit of a bounce back week, though one with a poor ending.  The week got off to a decent start on Sunday, as I needed just 11 additional steps to reach 4300.  Things picked up slightly on Monday, as I jumped up to 4600 steps thanks to lunchtime trip to the new local Sbarro.  A lunch trip to Buona on Tuesday helped push me up ever further, to 4600 steps.  Wednesday saw a big drop-off, needing a single additional step to get to 3600.  Thursday fell even more, going down to 3200 steps.  The return of crosstown baseball on Friday at Guaranteed Rate Field left me just 20 steps shy of 6300.  An upset stomach left me with only 2300 steps on Saturday, ending the week on a downturn.

Looking Ahead To 2025

Last week, on the extra off day in the All-Star break, Major League Baseball released their tentative 2025 schedule while I was away in Amsterdam.  For the third year in a row, MLB is keeping with a balanced schedule, playing 52 games against division opponents, 64 games against non-division opponents in the same league, and 46 interleague games, with series against every team in the opposite league.  With the White Sox about to cement the worst season in franchise history and the Cubs trying to figure out what went wrong on their way back to contention, the 2025 season looks like it could be a long one for the city of Chicago.  So, for one day, at least, let’s turn our attention to next summer for both teams.

The White Sox celebrate the 125th anniversary of the franchise, opening their season on March 27 at home against the Angels, kicking off a six-game homestand that also features the Twins.  They will make their first visit to Sacramento, the new home of the A’s, in the last weekend of April.

The interleague schedule sees the Phillies, Marlins, Cardinals, Brewers, Diamondbacks, and Padres coming to Guaranteed Rate Field, while the White Sox will go on the road to face the Pirates, Reds, Dodgers, Braves, Mets, Rockies, and Nationals.  The rivalry with their north side foes continues with a three-game weekend series at Wrigley Field in mid-May followed by another weekend at Guaranteed Rate Field the last weekend in July.

After wrapping up the home portion of the schedule in mid-September against the Orioles and Padres, the White Sox wrap up the 2025 season on the east coast, battling the Yankees and the Nationals to finish up the year.

On the north side, the Cubs head to Japan to open their season on March 18 with a two-game tilt against the Dodgers in Tokyo.  They return to the US to face the Diamondbacks on March 27 before heading to Sacramento for the first time to face the A’s.  They open up the home portion of the 2025 season on April 4 against the Padres.

Aside from the A’s, the Cubs will head out on the road to face the Twins, Angels, Yankees, Blue Jays, and Tigers, while the Mariners, Orioles, Guardians, Red Sox, and Royals will be coming to Wrigley Field.

Only ten of their 25 games in September are against their NL Central rivals, which could make a difference should the Cubs find themselves in contention.  They end the year with a six-game homestand, facing the Mets and the Cardinals.

FB10: Week 22

A mid-week holiday followed by a few days off almost pushed me back over the 30,000-step plateau.  Things got off to a slow start on Sunday, leaving me with 3800 steps.  Things improved a bit on Monday, pushing me up over 4100 steps.  Tuesday needed an additional 6 steps to reach 4000   The Juneteenth holiday on Wednesday saw me go back over 4000 steps.  A trip to Guaranteed Rate Field to see the White Sox battle the Astros on Thursday turned out to be the highpoint of the week, finishing with 5900 steps.  Friday crashed back down, ending with just 3700 steps.  The week ended on something of a high note on Saturday, as I jumped back up to 4200 steps.

FB10: Week 21

A warm and expensive week saw things fall off a little bit.  Things got off to a good start on Sunday thanks to a trip to see the White Sox battle the Red Sox at Guaranteed Rate Field, which gave me 5100 steps.  Things went down a bit on Monday, falling to 3500 steps.  A small increase on Tuesday left me 23 steps away from 3800.  A broken air conditioner and 90-degree temps on Wednesday put me a single step shy of 5000.  31 additional steps on Thursday would have given me 4800, as I monitored the goings on of the new AC install.  A break in the weather, and another day of AC installation, led to needing 30 more steps to get to 4200.  Things went sideways on Saturday, ending the week on a down note with exactly 2900 steps.

FB10: Week 19

A bit of a drop from the previous week, but I still managed to land on the good side of 30,000 steps.  Despite rain and an aborted attempt to attend the afternoon’s White Sox game, things got off to a decent start on Sunday with 4200 steps.  The Memorial Day holiday on Monday left me just 3 steps away from 3300.  A trip to Guaranteed Rate field for a baseball game on Tuesday night helped push me back up, finishing 3 (again!) steps shy of 6400.  I dropped back down on Wednesday, needing 32 steps to get to 4200.  Another slight drop on Thursday left me 18 steps short of 4000.  A walk down to the end of the block and back on Friday pushed me higher again, needing just a single additional step to reach 4500.  Another rainy day on Saturday left me 20 steps shy of 4100.
