iTunes Top 200 Artists: #191-195

Music.  It is a powerful thing that brings people together, creates memories, and evokes emotions.  It is the universal language that speaks to the soul.  It forms the soundtrack of our lives.

It has now been five years since we last counted down the Top 200 artists in my iTunes library, featuring the songs I have listened to the most since 2007.  It is time to do so again, seeing which performers still resonate and if any newer ones have joined the fray.  So, without further ado, here are my most listened to artists, based on number of plays as of January 1, 2026.

We kick things off today with our first batch of ten artists, covering the genres of pop, rock, and hip-hop.  We only have one performer who is a newcomer, at least as a solo artist, to the list this week.

#195: Naughty By Nature
iTunes stats: 59 plays
Previous ranking: #182

Formed in East Orange, New Jersey in 1986, the Grammy award winners added eleven new plays to the two seminal rap tunes that grace my collection.

#195: Fall Out Boy
iTunes stats: 59 plays
Previous ranking: #194

The local band, founded in 2001 and named after a character from The Simpsons, picked up fourteen new listens spread across the two songs in my collection, one of which spent the 2015 season as the running-onto-the-field music for the White Sox.

#195: Stan Bush
iTunes stats: 59 plays
Previous ranking: #178

The star of the TransFormers: The Movie soundtrack has two tracks comprise his total, which increased by ten listens over the past five years.

#195: The Cure
iTunes stats: 59 plays
Previous ranking: #188

One of the originators of the Goth Rock scene of the early 80s, The Cure, founded in 1976 in England, use two tracks to make up their total, which increased by thirteen over five years ago.

#195: The Juliana Hatfield Three
iTunes stats: 59 plays
Previous ranking: #197

After breaking up with the Blake Babies, Juliana Hatfield put together this band in 1993 before going solo, which rises two slots on this chart after garnering fifteen new listens across its two tracks, including one from the Reality Bites soundtrack.

Yet Another Mix Tape Monday – Volume 4

33 years ago, during my sophomore year of high school, I put together the first of what would eventually become a nearly 20 volume collection of mix tapes, containing my favorite songs that I had gathered either from the radio, a cassette tape, or (eventually) CD.  Today, we revisit those mix tapes for the fourth time and see how, or if, the soundtrack of my youth still resonates in today’s digital world and how much has changed over the past four years.

Volume 4 places us smack dab in the middle of my junior year of high school, from late 1990 and into 1991, and, quite possibly, the worst entry in this series.  There are 20 cassettes in this series, comprised of 287 songs.  Nearly 25% of them has been performed by a band I have seen in concert.  In fact, ever single entry contains at least one song by a band I have seen live.  Except this one.

Five of the songs here are older hits that weren’t current during my junior year.  Six of the songs come from just two bands: Poison and Roxette.  Judging solely from songs contained on this tape, you would have a hard time believing that Nirvana’s Nevermind would be released later that year and that the music industry would sound completely different a year later.

Damn Yankees – High Enough
iTunes stats: 15 plays, most recently on 7/28/2022

Peaking at #3 on the Billboard charts, the one big hit from the supergroup featuring right-wing douchenozzle Ted Nugent added only five new plays since 2017.

Sweet Sensation – If Wishes Came True
iTunes stats: 16 plays, most recently on 12/20/2021

The #25 hit of 1990 added three additional listens over the past four years.

Poison – Fallen Angel
iTunes stats: 28 plays, most recently on 11/10/2022

Poison’s hit from 1988, the only single from Open Up and Say… Ahh! not to crack the top 10, got six additional listens over the past four years.

Simpsons – Do The Bartman
iTunes stats: 15 plays, most recently on 3/23/2022

The first hit from the animated TV family, which went to #1 in five countries but wasn’t officially released as a single in the US, added seven new listens since 2019.

Roxette – The Look
iTunes stats: 20 plays, most recently on 12/22/2022

Ranked as the #17 single of 1989, the hit for the Swedish duo gained nine new spins over the past four years.

Poison – I Won’t Forget You
iTunes stats: 13 plays, most recently on 12/12/2021

The fourth single from Poison’s debut album, originally taped off a mixtape I “borrowed” from my friend Mike’s sister, managed just four additional plays since 2019.

Yet Another Mix Tape Monday – Volume 2

33 years ago, during my sophomore year of high school, I put together the first of what would eventually become a nearly 20 volume collection of mix tapes, containing my favorite songs that I had gathered either from the radio, a cassette tape, or (eventually) CD.  Today, we revisit those mix tapes for the fourth time and see how, or if, the soundtrack of my youth still resonates in today’s digital world and how much has changed over the past four years.

Once again, some older songs are mixed in with the hits of the day: Rag Doll and Dude (Looks Like A Lady) from Aerosmith’s 1987 album Permanent Vacation.  I had managed to borrow the cassette from my friend Scott and for some reason felt the need to add those two tracks, but only those two tracks, to my Favorites collection at the same time that more current hits from the band’s latest album, Pump, were on the charts. While I’m sure I returned the cassette to Scott at some point, I do currently have possession of it, sitting in a box in my closet alongside all of my other cassettes, including this homemade collection.

Volume 2 picks up in early 1990 and takes us through early summer, book-ended by Roxette hits and featuring another steady stream of hair metal and pop, with a little rap and R&B thrown in for flavor.

iTunes stats: 23 plays, most recently on 5/14/2021

Originally recorded from American Top 40, the fifth and final single from Roxette’s second album added six listens to its play total over these past four years.

Skid Row – Youth Gone Wild
iTunes stats: 25 plays, most recently on 12/6/2022

The first release from Skid Row, which peaked at #99 on the Billboard charts, nearly doubled its numbers of plays over the past four years.

Biz Markie – Just A Friend
iTunes stats: 37 plays, most recently on 10/28/2022

Ranked #81 on VH1s list of Greatest One Hit Wonders, Biz Markie’s smash added a dozen more listens over the past four years, partially in tribute following his 2021 death,

Mötley Crüe – Without You
iTunes stats: 24 plays, most recently on 6/16/2021

Peaking at #8 on the Billboard charts, the ballad, said to be about drummer Tommy Lee’s relationship with Heather Locklear, picked up seven additional spins since 2019.

Aerosmith – What It Takes
iTunes stats: 18 plays, most recently on 6/20/2019

The third single from Aerosmith’s Pump album, which peaked at #9 on the Billboard charts, picked up a mere three plays over the last four years and none since mid-2019.

MC Hammer – U Can’t Touch This
iTunes stats: 16 plays, most recently on 6/6/2021

The first rap song to be nominated for the Record of the Year Grammy, MC Hammer’s signature tune fizzled over the past four years with only three new listens.

Aerosmith – Rag Doll
iTunes stats: 17 plays, most recently on 4/20/2020

Released back in 1988, the final single from Aerosmith’s Permanent Vacation album, which peaked at #17 on the Billboard Hot 100, added has not been heard since the earliest days of the pandemic.

Vacation Recap – Universal Studios

UniversalAfter a whole 9 weeks since my last trip to Florida, I woke up early on the morning of June 1 for a 6 AM flight to Orlando with the family.  After landing, we caught the shuttle to the Hard Rock Hotel, where we had a long wait for the rooms to be ready.  After a quick lunch and a round of mini golf at the Citiwalk, Dennis, Angelina, Danny, and I went to Islands of Adventure for a quick re-introduction to Harry Potter land and the Jurassic Park ride.  We then headed back to the hotel, finally got in to our rooms, had dinner with appearances from a minion and Scooby Doo, and then called it an early night due to the early flight.

Thursday morning we got an early start and started at Universal, where we had a breakfast date at the Leaky Cauldron in the new Harry Potter area.  After breakfast, we headed to Olivanders to pick up wands for the boys, then went through the line for the Gringotts ride, before my mom and I begged off before the ride began.  It was at this point I got a text message from Jeff asking me to get him a wand.  As you may recall, I was at this very spot with Jeff less than 2 months ago and he could have purchased his own wand, but he was being a bit of a baby.  So, I went and bought him a wand, putting more thought in to it than I probably should have.  Once everyone was done at Gringotts, we hopped on the Hogwarts Express for the ride to Islands of Adventure.  Later, we wound up back at Universal, where Danny had an encounter with the shrunken head on the Knight Bus.

Friday was back to Universal for a character breakfast at Cafe LaBamba, followed by a return trip to Harry Potter land. After a quick trip back over to Islands of Adventure, we headed back to the hotel for some fun in the pool.

FB2: Week 19

FB2_Week19Another great week thanks to the end of the trip to Universal.  Things got off to a great start on Sunday, which was split between Universal Studios and Islands of Adventure.  Monday was an early day due to the effects of Tropical Storm Colin, which blew in around the middle of the day.  Tuesday featured one last trip to the park, where we ended the trip with one last go on the Simpson’s ride before checking out and heading to the airport.  Wednesday was back to normal, as I returned to work, though without the afternoon coffee run.  Thursday didn’t even break 5000 steps, as I was stuck at work until nearly 6:00.  Friday was back up above 6000 steps, if just barely.  Saturday also managed to break the 6000 step mark, thanks to a trip down to US Cellular Field with Michael.

Total steps: 66,521

Daily average: 9503

FOX Upfronts

gracepointIn a departure from years past, FOX focused only on their fall schedule at their upfront presentation and didn’t bother with the winter or spring schedules they usually roll out and quietly ignore when the time comes.  The big changes start on Sunday, with the animation block broken up to include live action series Brooklyn Nine-Nine airing between The Simpsons and Family Guy.

Sleepy Hollow returns for an extended second season, which will follow their highest profile new show, Gotham, featuring a pre-Batman Bruce Wayne and the people who will become his rogues gallery.  New Girl and The Mindy Project return to Tuesdays, following a new reality show that, in a show of restraint, will air twice a week.

Bones returns to Thursday for what is expected to be its final season, where it will be followed by Gracepoint, an American remake of Broadchurch that, like its source, will star David Tennant.  The American version, expected to be have a different ending from the original, will have a limited 10 episode run.

At some point in the spring, The Following is expected to return.  The only exciting show waiting for a timeslot seems to be Backstrom, a comic police procedural from Bones creator Hart Hanson and starring Rainn Wilson.

25 Years Of Fox – Comedies

The Fox network celebrated its 25th anniversary Sunday night in a 2 hour retrospective.  Here’s a look back at some of the comedies they have broadcast over the years, based on Wikipedia’s list..

Flying Blind: The comedy that introduced Téa Leoni to primetime audiences only lasted one season.  I don’t remember much about the show, beyond knowing that I enjoyed it and Leoni.

Get A Life: Chris Elliot starred as a 30 year old paperboy.  It was something of an accomplishment that the show managed to last 2 seasons.  The most enduring memory of the show might just be its theme song, REM’s Stand.

Herman’s Head: About a research assistant and the 4 representations of his psyche.  It is most notable today for featuring two stars from another Fox hit, the Simpsons.

In Living Color: The sketch comedy show that gave us Damon Wayans, David Alan Grier, and Jim Carrey was a cultural touch stone in the early 90s.  Who doesn’t love a little Fire Marshall Bill or Homey the Clown?

Married… With Children: The first prime time series to air on the network, and their first hit.  An entire generation grew up lusting after Christina Applegate.

Martin: A great comedy before Martin Lawrence went crazy and alienated the cast and crew.

25 Years Of Fox – Animation

The Fox network celebrated its 25th anniversary Sunday night in a 2 hour retrospective.  Here’s a look back at some of the cartoons, both prime time and as part of Fox Kids!, they have broadcast over the years, based on Wikipedia’s list..

Batman: The Animated Series: The series gave Batman a more gothic feel, following the trend introduced in the Tim Burton films.

Spider-Man: A highly serialized Saturday morning adaptation of the web-slinger.

The Tick: A surreal Saturday morning cartoon based on the comic which, sadly, only lasted 3 seasons.

Tiny Toon Adventures: Young versions of the Warner Brothers archtypes, with the originals appearing occasionally as their teachers.

X-Men: Another highly serialized adaptation, this time of Marvel’s merry band of mutants.

King Of The Hill: A straight sitcom about a family in Texas, only animated.

The Simpsons: The king of all animated programs has been on the air since 1989 and is, by far, the most successful show in the network’s history.
