iTunes Top 200 Artists: #41-50

Music.  It is a powerful thing that brings people together, creates memories, and evokes emotions.  It is the universal language that speaks to the soul.  It forms the soundtrack of our lives.

It has now been five years since we last counted down the Top 200 artists in my iTunes library, featuring the songs I have listened to the most since 2007.  It is time to do so again, seeing which performers still resonate and if any newer ones have joined the fray.  So, without further ado, here are my most listened to artists, based on number of plays as of January 1, 2026.

Fifty Years Of Music – 1996

Fifty years ago, I made my first appeared on the Earth.  In celebration, we are going to take a look at the year-end Billboard Hot 100 singles chart for each year of my life and see what songs resonated with me at the time and if they continue to do so to this day.

We continue our look back at the music of my lifetime with 1996, the year I should have graduated from college had I settled on a major earlier, went back to the bank for a second summer, returned to Purdue for my fifth and final year of college (at least for now), and turned 22.  Only 33 songs on the Hot 100 are familiar to me today, with 24 of them appearing in my collection in one way or another.

#99: Hootie & The Blowfish – Only Wanna Be with You
iTunes stats: 16 plays

Returning for its second straight year-end chart, the track peaked at #2 on the Album Rock Tracks chart and #6 on the Hot 100.

#98: Los del Rio – Macarena
iTunes stats: N/A

The original Spanish language version of the tune, it reached #23.

#94: Ace of Base – Beautiful Life
iTunes stats: 28 plays

Topping out at #15, it was the lead single from the group’s second album in Europe and the second single in the US.

#92: Metallica – Until It Sleeps
iTunes stats: 15 plays

The band’s lone top ten hit, it went to #10.

#81: Toni Braxton – Un-Break My Heart
iTunes stats: N/A

Spending eleven total weeks atop the Hot 100, it ruled the charts from December of 1996 through mid-February of 1997.

#76: Sophie B. Hawkins – As I Lay Me Down
iTunes stats: 16 plays

Hitting the year-end chart for the second time, it peaked at #6.

#75: Sheryl Crow – If It Makes You Happy
iTunes stats: 14 plays

The lead single from Crow’s sophomore album, it reached #10 and remains her most recent top ten solo release.

#68: No Doubt – Just a Girl
iTunes stats: 38 plays

The band’s first charting single in the US, it spent 29 weeks on the Hot 100, topping out at #23.

#67: BoDeans – Closer to Free
iTunes stats: 23 plays

Hitting #16 and becoming the band’s biggest hit, it was used as the theme song for Party of Five.

#66: Adam Clayton and Larry Mullen – Theme from Mission: Impossible
iTunes stats: N/A

Recorded for the first Tom Cruise Mission: Impossible film, it peaked at #7.

#56: Oasis – Wonderwall
iTunes stats: 25 plays

The fourth single from the group’s second studio album, it spent a then-unprecedented ten weeks atop the Modern Rock Tracks chart and reached #8 on the Hot 100 in March, becoming their lone top-ten hit.

#50: Hootie & The Blowfish – Time
iTunes stats: 14 plays

The fourth single from the group’s breakout debut, it topped out at #14.

Yet Another Mix Tape Monday – Volume 20

33 years ago, during my sophomore year of high school, I put together the first of what would eventually become a nearly 20 volume collection of mix tapes, containing my favorite songs that I had gathered either from the radio, a cassette tape, or (eventually) CD.  Today, we revisit those mix tapes for the fourth time and see how, or if, the soundtrack of my youth still resonates in today’s digital world and how much has changed over the past four years.

At some point during the 1995-1996 school year, I noticed a slowdown in the tape players on my boombox.  It bothered me enough that I brought it in for repair multiple times, getting new heads installed, but nothing seemed to work.  Or, at least nothing made me feel like they worked and I, at least, still heard a lag.  On the plus side, I did manage to come home with a Blizzard of Oz cassette, which one of the techs must have used for testing it and left in the compartment when it was returned to me.  But, my frustration with the ongoing effort led to end for this series of tapes, with the last volume just barely stretching on to Side B.

We wrap up our look back with Volume 20, which stretches over late 1995 and the fall semester of the first of my two senior years of college, while I was living in Hilltop Apartments.

Yet Another Mix Tape Monday – Volume 13

33 years ago, during my sophomore year of high school, I put together the first of what would eventually become a nearly 20 volume collection of mix tapes, containing my favorite songs that I had gathered either from the radio, a cassette tape, or (eventually) CD.  Today, we revisit those mix tapes for the fourth time and see how, or if, the soundtrack of my youth still resonates in today’s digital world and how much has changed over the past four years.

The specter of death hovers over this collection of songs, as it would any music list.  Nirvana front man Kurt Cobain took his own life during the timeframe covered by this cassette.  Alice In Chains leader Layne Stayley od’d in 2002.  Cranberries singer Dolores O’Riordan drowned due to alcohol intoxication in 2018.  Guitarist and chief songwriter Doug Hopkins killed himself after being kicked out of the Gin Blossoms in 1993, just as the band was hitting it big by playing his songs.  Snoop Dogg was charged with (and eventually acquited of) murder after a member of a rival gang was allegedly shot and killed by his bodyguard in 1993.  Soundgarden front man Chris Cornell hung himself in 2017.

Six instances of death just in a collection of sixteen songs.  None of that is out of the ordinary.  Rock and roll has a long history of tortured artists who, when given access to money and drugs and find themselves surrounded by “yes” men who don’t necessarily have their best interests at heart, have imploded and found themselves in an early grave.

Are things any better today?  It’s hard to tell.  Older artists, like Tom Petty and Prince, continue to fall prey to their demons, helped along by the introduction of fentanyl.  Younger artists, from what I can tell, seem to be handling things better, whether due to the changed business model of the music industry or because of society’s greater acknowledgment of mental health needs.

Volume 13 takes us into late spring of 1994 and the end of my sophomore year of college. The song selection is now mostly completely alternative, with just one or two hip-hop hits to go along with it., with a little pop and Aerosmith on the side.

Side A

Alice In Chains – No Excuses
iTunes stats: 24 plays, most recently on 8/12/2022

The first Alice In Chains song to top the Mainstream Rock Tracks chart, originally acquired via 93.5 KHY in Lafayette, added eight new plays over the last four years.

Smashing Pumpkins – Disarm
iTunes stats: 19 plays, most recently on 3/13/2020

The third single from the band’s breakthrough release Siamese Dream, which was banned by the BBC because of its lyrical content, picked up just four new listens and none since the corona virus lockdown.

Counting Crows – Mr. Jones
iTunes stats: 24 plays, most recently on 7/6/2022

The debut single from Counting Crows, which hit #2 on the Modern Rock Tracks chart, added an impressive seven plays over the past four years.

The Cranberries – Dreams
iTunes stats: 30 plays, most recently on 11/4/2021

The first single from the band, which became a hit after Linger put them on the map, saw an eight-listen increase.

Jodeci – Cry For You
iTunes stats: 16 plays, most recently on 3/10/2022

The 60th biggest hit of 1994 picked up just four listens over these past four years.

Julianna Hatfield Three – Spin The Bottle
iTunes stats: 26 plays, most recently on 5/15/2022

The track, featured on the Reality Bites soundtrack, added five additional plays over the last four years.

Aerosmith – Deuces Are Wild
iTunes stats: 19 plays, most recently on 3/5/2020

Last heard prior to the pandemic, Aerosmith’s contribution to The Beavis and Butt-Head Experience compilation album, originally recorded for Pump, added just five listens.

Gin Blossoms – Mrs. Rita
iTunes stats: 13 plays, most recently on 8/24/2022

iTunes Top 200 Artists: #50-60

It’s been 4 years since we last counted down the Top 200 artists in my iTunes library.  Since my iTunes stats are still intact, across multiple PCs, iPods, iPads, and iPhones, I figured it was time to take another look at the artists that have entertained me the most based on number of plays from late 2007 through January 1, 2021.

We wrap up the first three quarters of the list today with the next batch of 10 artists, with ties at 56th, 54th, and 50th.

#60: Frank Sinatra
iTunes stats: 142 plays
Previous ranking: #81

The crooner from New Jersey and the leader of the Rat Pack jumps 19 slots thanks mostly to former White Sox third baseman Todd Frazier, who uses Sinatra tunes as his at bat music.

#59: TLC
iTunes stats: 143 plays
Previous ranking: #64

Adding a seventh song to my collection helps push the hip hop trio up 5 spots after a 104% increase.

#58: Smashing Pumpkins
iTunes stats: 145 plays
Previous ranking: #58

64 new listens over the past 4 years enables the Chicago based alternative band to remain stable in the rankings.

#56: Cheap Trick
iTunes stats: 153 plays
Previous ranking: #55

The boys from Rockford, who I have seen open up for two other bands on this list, add an additional 67 listens, which puts them down 1 spot on the list.

#56: Cracker
iTunes stats: 153 plays
Previous ranking: #51

Only 58 new listens over the past 4 years, a small 61% increase, led to a 5 spot drop for the Georgia rockers.

#54: Sam Kinison

Top 200 Albums – #161 – 165

itunes_imageNearly 4 years ago, we first counted down the Top 200 albums in my iTunes library. Since that time, I’ve successfully managed to migrate my music collection to a new PC with the stats intact. So, I figured it was time to take another look, based on number of plays from late 2007 through January 1, 2018.

We continue things with the next batch of 10 albums that rank between #161 and 165, including 5 studio recordings, 3 compilations, 1 live performance, and 1 greatest hits package.

#165: Smashing Pumpkins – Siamese Dream
iTunes stats: 48 plays
Previous Ranking: 141

The smash (no pun intended) second album from the Chicago alternative royalty used only 3 songs to make up this total.

#165: Stone Temple Pilots – Core
iTunes stats: 48 plays
Previous Ranking: 181

4 songs, most of which have some sort of problem thanks to a badly scratched disc from which they were ripped, come from the debut album from the alternative superstars.

#165: R.E.M. – Green
iTunes stats: 48 plays
Previous Ranking: 186

The sixth release, and major label debut, from the Athens, GA based alternative band has 3 different songs that I’ve listened to to make up this total, more than double since last time out.

#165: Various Artists – Grease (Soundtrack from the Motion Picture)
iTunes stats: 48 plays
Previous Ranking: 164

The soundtrack to the 1978 hit film had 5 tracks, from film stars John Travolta, Olivia Newton John, and Stockard Channing, among others, contribute to this total.

#165: Various Artists – Saturday Morning Cartoons’ Greatest Hits
iTunes stats: 48 plays
Previous Ranking: N/A

What happens when you take cartoon theme songs from the 60s and 70s and have some of the bigger alternative acts of the 90s cover them?  You get this compilation, which makes a strong debut.

iTunes Top 200 Artists: #51-59

3 years ago, we first counted down the then Top 100 artists in my iTunes library.  Since that time, I’ve successfully managed to migrate my music collection to a new PC with the stats intact.  So, I figured it was time to take another look, expanding out the field to the top 200 artists, based on number of plays from late 2007 through January 1, 2017.

We finish up the first 2/3 of the list with listens from the high 70s through the mid 90s.

#59: Kermit the Frog
iTunes stats: 78 plays
Previous ranking: N/A

The world’s most favorite Muppet makes the second highest debut on the list, clocking in with 7 tracks.

#59: 10,000 Maniacs
iTunes stats: 78 plays
Previous ranking: #53

Only 3 tracks make up this total, though a scant 29 new listens contributed to a 6 spot drop in the rankings.

#58: Smashing Pumpkins
iTunes stats: 81 plays
Previous ranking: #59

Doubling their play total, plus 1, over the past 3 years enables the Chicago based alternative band to jump up 1 whole spot in the rankings.

#57: Frankie Valli & The Four Seasons
iTunes stats: 83 plays
Previous ranking: #45

A mere 17 new listens over the past 3 years cause the Jersey Boys inspirations to drop 12 spots on the list.

#56: The Rolling Stones
iTunes stats: 84 plays
Previous ranking: #74

Listens from 17 songs, up from 9 three years ago, led to the British bad boys jumping 18 spots in the rankings.

#55: Cheap Trick
iTunes stats: 86 plays
Previous ranking: #56

The boys from Rockford add an additional 40 listens to rise 1 spot on the list.

#54: The Outfield
