iTunes Top 200 Artists: #31-40

Music. It is a powerful thing that brings people together, creates memories, and evokes emotions. It is the universal language that speaks to the soul. It forms the soundtrack of our lives.

It has now been five years since we last counted down the Top 200 artists in my iTunes library, featuring the songs I have listened to the most since 2007. It is time to do so again, seeing which performers still resonate and if any newer ones have joined the fray. So, without further ado, here are my most listened to artists, based on number of plays as of January 1, 2026.

We hit the top 40 today with the next batch of ten artists, much of which is tied in some way, shape, or form to one of the local baseball clubs.

#40: Tori Amos
iTunes stats: 263 plays
Previous ranking: #43

66 new listens for the same eleven songs over the past five years push the singer/songwriter, who I was supposed to see live at the Rosemont Horizon back in 1998 but missed due to a friend’s wedding, up three spots.

#39: The Rolling Stones
iTunes stats: 289 plays
Previous ranking: #37

The 1989 inductees into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame added 76 additional listens, which dropped them two spots in the rankings.

#38: Steam
iTunes stats: 296 plays
Previous ranking: #36

A casualty of my White Sox victory playlist getting fewer plays over the last couple of years, Steam drops two spots in the rankings despite 76 additional plays.

#37: Harry Caray
iTunes stats: 300 plays
Previous ranking: #40

Two versions of Take Me Out to the Ballgame, one from his tenure in the White Sox booth and one from the Cubs, scored a 44% increase for the legendary broadcaster.

#36: Captain Stubby and the Buccaneers
iTunes stats: 308 plays
Previous ranking: #34

The novelty band, responsible for the White Sox rally song from 1959, added 79 listens in the past five years, causing them to drop two spots in the rankings.

iTunes Top 200 Wrap-Up

Music. It is a powerful thing that brings people together, creates memories, and evokes emotions. It is the universal language that speaks to the soul. It forms the soundtrack of our lives.

It had been five years since we last counted down the Top 200 songs in my iTunes library. Last week, we finished our journey through the latest list of my most listened to songs since late 2007. Now it’s time to take a final look at those 210 songs and the artists that made them. The average number of listens was just over 52, with the median number being 41. There were 35 new entries, and, overall, there was an average increase of just a tad over nine listens per song.

It has now been five years since we last counted down the Top 200 songs in my iTunes library, featuring he songs I have listened to the most since 2007. It is time to do so again, seeing which older songs still resonate and if any newer ones have joined the fray. So, without further ado, here are my most listened to songs, based on number of plays as of January 1, 2025.

We continue this week with the third most popular song in my collection, which became a sports staple in 1977 thanks to an organist on the south side of Chicago.

#3: Steam – Na Na Hey Hey Kiss Him Goodbye
iTunes stats: 215 plays, most recently on 10/16/2019

Originally written as a blues shuffle in the early 1960s, the song was recorded and released in 1969 by the then-fictitious band called Steam. It reached #1 for two weeks in December, finishing as Billboard’s final multi-week number 1 hit of the 1960s. The song got a second life in 1977, thanks to the South Side Hitmen and their organist, Nancy Faust. With the White Sox hitting the cover off the ball and finding themselves in a surprising first place, Faust started playing the song after home runs. Eventually, she also started playing it when the opposing pitcher was chased from the game.

The song became a hit once again, and Faust was awarded a RIAA gold record from Mercury Records to acknowledge her contributions. It was a mainstay at Comiskey Park and its successors until Faust’s retirement in 2010. Post-COVID, a recording of the song still makes the occasional appearance, though not as often as in Faust’s heyday. The high play total is a result of the songs inclusion on every iteration of my White Sox victory playlists.

We last counted down the Top 200 albums in my iTunes library four years ago. Since that time, the world has literally changed, and my commute has decreased from 1+ hours each way to 25 steps. So, despite the decrease in potential listening time, I figured it was time to take another look, based on number of plays from late 2007 through the morning of January 1, 2022.

Well, it all comes down to this: the top ten. We finish things off today with the ten albums I have listened to the most over the last 15 years. including three comedy albums, three compilations, two soundtracks, one greatest hits package, and one bootleg live performance.

#10: Various Artists – Television’s Greatest Hits, Vol. 3 (70’s & 80’s)
iTunes stats: 378 plays
Previous Ranking: 13

Another collection of TV theme songs, this time covering the late 70s and the early 80s, uses 32 songs, from shows such as The Facts of Life, Inspector Gadget, and Barney Miller, sees an 85% increase over the past four years.

#9: Garbage – One Mile High… Live
iTunes stats: 378 plays
Previous Ranking: 17

The audio rip of the band’s live video release, featuring 21 different tracks, jumps up eight spots after more than doubling its number of plays in the past four years.

#8: George Carlin – It’s Bad For Ya
iTunes stats: 391 plays
Previous Ranking: 24

The final album from George Carlin, released just over a month after his death, increases its total by over 144%, thanks in part to being used as a sleeping aid when I’m away from home.

#7: Patton Oswalt – Werewolves and Lollipops
iTunes stats: 395 plays
Previous Ranking: 10

An 85% increase for Patton Oswalt’s second comedy album, which would be significantly higher if I were to ever sync my old iPhone 4s, which I use to lull myself to sleep at home, again.

#6: Various Artists – Living in the 90’s
iTunes stats: 396 plays
Previous Ranking: 8

A whopping 22 songs, from bands like The Proclaimers, EMF, and Roxette, racked up an additional 172 new listens for this compilation of early 90s hits.

iTunes Top 200 Artists: #31-40

It’s been 4 years since we last counted down the Top 200 artists in my iTunes library. Since my iTunes stats are still intact, across multiple PCs, iPods, iPads, and iPhones, I figured it was time to take another look at the artists that have entertained me the most based on number of plays from late 2007 through January 1, 2021.

We continue today with the next batch of 10 artists, with ties at 50th, 48th, and 43rd.

#40: Harry Caray
iTunes stats: 208 plays
Previous ranking: #39

A scant 61% increase, due in part to my attending no baseball games in 2020 due to the corona virus, for the legendary broadcaster for both the White Sox and the Cubs.

#39: The Offspring
iTunes stats: 210 plays
Previous ranking: #44

The winners of the 1999 Billboard Music Award for Modern Rock Artist of the Year gained 96 new listens from the 9 tunes in my collection, inching them up five spots in the rankings.

#38: Taylor Swift
iTunes stats: 212 plays
Previous ranking: #71

The 10-time Grammy winner, who is halfway towards an EGOT, saw a 248% increase with 151 new plays, thanks in part to a new album added to the collection.

#37: The Rolling Stones
iTunes stats: 213 plays
Previous ranking: #56

The 1989 inductees into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame added 129 additional listens, which moved them up 19 spots in the rankings.

#36: Steam
iTunes stats: 220 plays
Previous ranking: #29

Another casualty of the White Sox victory playlist getting fewer plays over the last few years, especially this last summer thanks to the corona virus, Steam drops 7 spots in the rankings due to only 56 additional plays.

iTunes Top 200 Wrap-Up

Last week, we wrapped up our latest look at the top 200 songs I’ve listened to, according to iTunes, since late 2007. Now it’s time to take a final look at those 200 songs and the 122 (or so) artists that made them. The average number of listens was just under 44, with the median number being 34. There were 52 new entries, and of the returning entries, there was an average increase of just a tad over 15 listens per song.
