iTunes Top 200: #158 Part II

Music. It is a powerful thing that brings people together, creates memories, and evokes emotions. It is the universal language that speaks to the soul. It forms the soundtrack of our lives.

It has now been five years since we last counted down the Top 200 songs in my iTunes library, featuring he songs I have listened to the most since 2007. It is time to do so again, seeing which older songs still resonate and if any newer ones have joined the fray. So, without further ado, here are my most listened to songs, based on number of plays as of January 1, 2025.

We continue this week with the next batch of songs tied for 158th place with 37 plays apiece since my stats began in late 2007.

#158: Green Day – Basket Case
iTunes stats: 37 plays, most recently on 9/28/2024
Previous ranking: #144

The third single from the band’s major label debut, it spent five weeks atop Billboard’s Modern Rock Tracks chart and earned the group one of their four Grammy nominations in 1995.

iTunes stats: 37 plays, most recently on 9/19/2023
Previous ranking: NR

The band’s first hit to chart on the Hot 100, it has picked up 20 new plays over the past nine years.

#158: George Carlin – People Who Wear Visors
iTunes stats: 37 plays, most recently on 6/4/2024
Previous ranking: NR

A strong debut for this comedy bit from Carlin’s twelfth HBO special.

#158: Garfunkel and Oates – Pregnant Women are Smug
iTunes stats: 37 plays, most recently on 12/1/2024
Previous ranking: #170

Seven new listens for the comedic tune from Riki Lindhome and Kate Micucci.

#158: Foo Fighters – My Hero
iTunes stats: 37 plays, most recently on 8/18/2024
Previous ranking: NR

Released in January of 1998 as the third single from the band’s second album, it reached #6 on the Alternative Songs chart.

iTunes Top 200 Albums Wrap-Up

Last week, we wrapped up our latest look at the top 200 albums that I’ve listened to, according to iTunes, since late 2007. Now it’s time to take a final look at those 200 albums and the 536 (or so) artists that contributed to them. The average number of listens was just under 150, with the median number being 113. There were 13 new entries, and of the returning entries, there was an average increase of just a tad over 58 listens per album.

Top 200 Albums: #107 – 119

We last counted down the Top 200 albums in my iTunes library four years ago. Since that time, the world has literally changed, and my commute has decreased from 1+ hours each way to 25 steps. So, despite the decrease in potential listening time, I figured it was time to take another look, based on number of plays from late 2007 through the morning of January 1, 2022.

We continue today with the next batch of ten albums that I have listened to the most over the last 15 years, breaking the triple digit total play plateau with three compilations, and music from the 60s, 80s, 90s, and beyond.

#119: Bangles – Bangles: Greatest Hits
iTunes stats: 103 plays
Previous Ranking: 143

Five of the Bangles biggest hits, which notched 49 additional listens over the past four years, contribute to this total for their greatest hits album.

#119: Florence + The Machine – Between Two Lungs
iTunes stats: 103 plays
Previous Ranking: N/A

A very strong introduction to this chart for the debut album from the English indie rock band, thanks to a 186% increase in listens.

#116: Florence + The Machine – Ceremonials
iTunes stats: 105 plays
Previous Ranking: 171

A 123% increase in plays over the past four years led to this 65-spot jump for the second album from Florence + The Machine, which featured prominently in my Road Trip playlist for the 2016 drive to Florida with Jeff and Val.

#116: Green Day – Dookie
iTunes stats: 105 plays
Previous Ranking: 109

The breakthrough major label debut for the California punks added 40 new plays to the five tracks from the label in my collection.

#116: Various Artists – More Music From Romy and Michele’s High School Reunion
iTunes stats: 105 plays
Previous Ranking: 136

The second soundtrack album to the hit Lisa Kudrow/Mira Sorvino film takes six 80s hits, from the likes of Tiffany and Rick Astley, and raises their play total by 87.5%.

iTunes Top 200 Artists: Wrapup

Last week, we wrapped up our latest look at the top 200 artists I’ve listened to, according to iTunes, since 2008. Now it’s time to take a final look at those 200 artists and the songs that put them on the list. The average number of listens per group was just over 172 1/2, with the median number being 84 1/2. There were 23 new artists debuting on the list, with the highest being John Travolta at #117.

iTunes Top 200 Artists: #31-40

It’s been 4 years since we last counted down the Top 200 artists in my iTunes library. Since my iTunes stats are still intact, across multiple PCs, iPods, iPads, and iPhones, I figured it was time to take another look at the artists that have entertained me the most based on number of plays from late 2007 through January 1, 2021.

We continue today with the next batch of 10 artists, with ties at 50th, 48th, and 43rd.

#40: Harry Caray
iTunes stats: 208 plays
Previous ranking: #39

A scant 61% increase, due in part to my attending no baseball games in 2020 due to the corona virus, for the legendary broadcaster for both the White Sox and the Cubs.

#39: The Offspring
iTunes stats: 210 plays
Previous ranking: #44

The winners of the 1999 Billboard Music Award for Modern Rock Artist of the Year gained 96 new listens from the 9 tunes in my collection, inching them up five spots in the rankings.

#38: Taylor Swift
iTunes stats: 212 plays
Previous ranking: #71

The 10-time Grammy winner, who is halfway towards an EGOT, saw a 248% increase with 151 new plays, thanks in part to a new album added to the collection.

#37: The Rolling Stones
iTunes stats: 213 plays
Previous ranking: #56

The 1989 inductees into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame added 129 additional listens, which moved them up 19 spots in the rankings.

#36: Steam
iTunes stats: 220 plays
Previous ranking: #29

Another casualty of the White Sox victory playlist getting fewer plays over the last few years, especially this last summer thanks to the corona virus, Steam drops 7 spots in the rankings due to only 56 additional plays.

Last week, we wrapped up our latest look at the top 200 songs I’ve listened to, according to iTunes, since late 2007. Now it’s time to take a final look at those 200 songs and the 122 (or so) artists that made them. The average number of listens was just under 44, with the median number being 34. There were 52 new entries, and of the returning entries, there was an average increase of just a tad over 15 listens per song.
