Harry CarayNow that the Cubs have installed their brand new jumbotron, there’s been a renewed rumbling from certain corners of their fanbase to dump the tired “tradition” of guest conductors for the 7th inning stretch and to replace it with a video of former broadcaster Harry Caray.  Of course, the Cubs brass quickly shot down the suggestion, saying that fan surveys tell them that the guest conductors were “the highest-rated activity during the game” over the past 3 seasons.  Which means one of 2 things: Cub management is lying or Cub fans who fill out surveys are stupid.

Honestly, my money if on option #1.  If there’s one thing we’ve learned over the past year is that Crane Kenney and the rest of the business side of the Cubs brass are either stupid or liars, and they didn’t get to the positions they are in by being stupid.  After 18 seasons of the guest conductor, nobody really cares anymore.  Absolutely nobody looks forward to Jim Belushi or the state lacrosse champs to stick their head out the window and lead the crowd in singing Take Me Out To The Ballgame.  The time has come.  Bring back Harry.

100 Years Of Innovation

1976 Chicago White Sox100 years ago today, Bill Veeck, the former club treasurer for the Cubs and two-time owner of the White Sox, was born here in Chicago.  Veeck followed his father, the then president of the Cubs, into baseball.  As a 13 year old, Veeck came up with the idea of planting ivy to cover the outfield walls at Wrigley Field.  In 1937, as general manager, he oversaw the construction of the iconic hand operated scoreboard that is still in use today.

Veeck left the Cubs in 1941, striking out on his own and buying the minor league Milwaukee Brewers.  While he owned the team, he also served in the Marines during World War II, where he injured his leg, which required amputation.  After the war, Veeck sold his interests in the Brewers and bought the Cleveland Indians, returning to the major leagues.  In July of 1947, Veeck broke the color barrier in the American League by signing Larry Doby.  In 1948, the Indians won their first World Series title since 1920.  Veeck was forced to sell the Indians in 1949 due to his divorce.

2 years later, Veeck was back in business, purchasing the St. Louis Browns.  While trying to force the Cardinals out of town, Veeck came up with one of his most famous, or perhaps infamous, stunts, signing Eddie Gaedel, standing 3 feet and 7 inches tall, and sending him to the plate in the second game of a double header against the Detroit Tigers on August 19, 1951.  Gaedel walked on four pitches and was lifted for a pinch runner.  American League president Will Harridge voided Gaedel’s contract the next day, claiming that Veeck was making a mockery of the game. In response, Veeck threatened to request an official ruling on whether Yankees shortstop Phil Rizzuto, the reigning MVP, was a short ballplayer or a tall midget.

iTunes Top 100 Artists: #42-50

My latest desktop computer arrived in late 2007, at which point I transitioned all of my music off of my laptop. 2 iPods, 2 iPhones, and an iPad later, that computer is still my main repository of music, with iTunes updating its stats every time I listen to something.

Having already gone through cassette tapes and CDs, and digital music, it’s time to roll everything up with the Top 100 artists that I’ve listened to as of 8/21/2013, according to iTunes.  After a week off, we return today to look at the next batch of artists, numbers 42-50, which includes a nice mix of musical genres and a legendary broadcaster.

#42: No Doubt

iTunes stats: 71 plays

12 songs make up the total for the band I saw live back in 1996 at the Elliot Hall of Music before they hit it big.

#43: Hole

iTunes stats: 69 plays

6 songs, written mostly by either Kurt Cobain or Billy Corgan, make up the total for Courtney Love’s band.

#44: Harry Caray

iTunes stats: 68 plays

2 versions of Take Me Out To The Ballgame, one representing each side of town, put the Hall of Fame broadcaster on the list.

#45: Frankie Valli & The Four Seasons

iTunes stats: 66 plays

The New Jersey based group used 7 songs to make up their total.

#46: Snoop Dogg

iTunes stats: 65 plays

8 songs make up the total for the ganja-smoking gangsta rapper.

Goodbye, iPhone 4S – Music Edition

A little more than a week ago, I upgraded my phone from the iPhone 4S to the newly released iPhone 5S.  The biggest difference, aside from a slightly bigger screen, is the jump from 3G (or 4G, if you believe AT&T’s hype) to LTE.  I had the 4S for a little under 2 years, and in that time, we traveled the world together (well, at least going back to the UK) and have listened to a lot of podcasts and music. Here is every song (all 2079 of them) I’ve listened to on the phone, with some (ok, very little) bonus commentary.  Godspeed.

iTunes Top 100: #11 – 20

Recorded in the mid-1970s, the Hall of Fame broadcaster leads a Comiskey Park crowd during the 7th inning stretch.

#12: The Lonely Island – I’m On A Boat (ft. T-Pain)

The song, which debuted as a digital short on Saturday Night Live, was nominated for a Grammy for Best Rap/Sung Collaboration.

The at-bat music for White Sox second baseman Gordon Beckham.

#14: The Lonely Island – Natalie’s Rap (ft. Natalie Portman & Chris Parnell)

The second digital short from The Lonely Island featured Natalie Portman playing against type as a lewd gangsta.

Friday’s Tunes

Between the commute to work, a lunch time trip to Best Buy to pick up some essential office supplies, CD burning, and the commute home with a stop off at the Weber Grill for dinner, I spent a lot of time in the car on Friday listening to music. A-One, A-Two, A-Three…

Following up on Bob Brenley’s departure from the broadcast booth earlier this week, the good people at Bleed Cubbie Blue check in today with the suggestion that the Cubs use this opportunity to stop their “celebrity” 7th inning stretch conductor and interview.  I’ve been saying this for years.

For those of you unaware, the Cubs started bringing in actual celebrities to sing Take Me Out To The Ballgame following the death of Harry Caray prior to the 1998 season.  What started as a tribute to the late broadcaster has, over the past 15 years, turned into another opportunity for every C and D-List actor looking to plug an appearance at Zanies or their new straight-to-DVD film release.  Just this past season, the Cubs welcomed such luminaries as comedians Tom Dreesen and Jon Lovitz, former Bull Bobby Hansen, and former Bear Donnell Woolford.  If these “stars” were only singing the stretch and then hitting the street, it might be bearable for it to continue.  However, the Cubs give up a half-inning of their broadcast so that Len Kasper can interview these superstars when he should be doing play-by-play.

For years, I would suggest switching over to a tape of Harry Caray singing Take Me Out To The Ballgame.  At this point, though, it may be better to just switch to the organ and letting the crowd lead themselves.  A whole generation of Cubs fans have been raised without hearing Caray and likely hold no special regard for him.

Goodbye, iPhone 3G – Music Edition

As I wait for tomorrow’s delivery of my new iPhone 4S, it is time to say goodbye to the 3G that has been my trusty companion for nearly the past 3 1/2 years.  We’ve traveled the world together (well, at least Canada and the UK) and have listened to a lot of music.  Here is every song (all 1597 of them) I’ve listened to on the phone, with some (ok, very little) bonus commentary!
