iTunes Top 200: #167 continued

itunes_image3 years ago, we first counted down the then Top 100 songs in my iTunes library. Since that time, I’ve successfully managed to migrate my music collection to a new PC with the stats intact. So, I figured it was time to take another look, expanding out the field to the top 200 songs, based on number of plays as of January 1, 2016.

Today, we continue with the second grouping of 10 songs tied for 167th place with 17 plays apiece since late 2007, 2 more than what would have qualified for the top 100 3 years ago.

#167: Garfunkel and Oates – I Would Never (Dissect a Ewe)
iTunes stats: 17 plays, most recently on 11/17/2015
Previous ranking: Unranked

A parody of another song on this album brings the comedy stylings of Garfunkel and Oates to this list for the first time.

#167: Goops – Build Me Up Buttercup

Previous ranking: #76

A cover of the Foundations hit, the song was included on the Mallrats soundtrack in 1995.

#167: Green Day – American Idiot
iTunes stats: 17 plays, most recently on 9/28/2015

The title track from Green Day’s 7th studio album.

Goodbye, iPhone 4S – Music Edition

A little more than a week ago, I upgraded my phone from the iPhone 4S to the newly released iPhone 5S.  The biggest difference, aside from a slightly bigger screen, is the jump from 3G (or 4G, if you believe AT&T’s hype) to LTE.  I had the 4S for a little under 2 years, and in that time, we traveled the world together (well, at least going back to the UK) and have listened to a lot of podcasts and music. Here is every song (all 2079 of them) I’ve listened to on the phone, with some (ok, very little) bonus commentary.  Godspeed.

Let’s Go-Go-Go White Sox Captain Stubby and the Buccaneers 33
He’s a Pirate Klaus Badelt Pirates of the Caribbean (Soundtrack from the Motion Picture) 32
Take Me Out To The Ballgame Harry Caray 31
Thunderstruck AC/DC The Razors Edge 31
Gordon Beckham Intro 29
Na Na Hey Hey Kiss Him Goodbye Steam Billboard’s Top Rock ‘n’ Roll Hits: 1969 29
Don’t Stop Believin’ Journey Journey’s Greatest Hits 27
sox05_montage 27
We Are The Champions Queen Queen: Greatest Hits I & II 27
Your Love The Outfield Play Deep 27
2008 White Sox Central Division Champs Montage Chris Tannehill WSCR 670 The Score 25
Take Me Out To The Ballgame Nancy Faust 25
Harvester Of Sorrow Metallica …And Justice For All 20

You would hope that these numbers would have been higher, but this past season’s miserable performance by the White Sox has put the songs on their playlist out of mind more often than not.

Cannonball The Breeders The First 1000 Years- Rock 19

iTunes Top 100 Artists: #62-70

itunes_image

My latest desktop computer arrived in late 2007, at which point I transitioned all of my music off of my laptop. 2 iPods, 2 iPhones, and an iPad later, that computer is still my main repository of music, with iTunes updating its stats every time I listen to something.

Having already gone through cassette tapes and CDs, and digital music, it’s time to roll everything up with the Top 100 artists that I’ve listened to as of 8/21/2013, according to iTunes. Today we look at the the the next batch, numbers 62-70, which includes a few actors that appeared on a certain soundtrack.

#62: Amy Adams

iTunes stats: 39 plays

The amazing actress makes the list thanks to her work on the soundtrack to The Muppets.

#63: Gin Blossoms

iTunes stats: 38 plays

The Tempe, AZ band makes the list thanks to 5 different tunes, mostly from their debut album.

#63: Jason Segel

iTunes stats: 38 plays

Another Hollywood type makes the list thanks to The Muppets.

#63: Ludacris

iTunes stats: 38 plays

The Atlanta-based rapper uses three songs, each with over 10 plays, to make up his total.

#66: Bell Biv DeVoe

iTunes stats: 37 plays

The former members of New Edition went off on their own and used 3 songs to make it to this position on the list.

Mix Tape Monday – Undated 2

After my tape deck crapped out in 1997, I was stuck listening to either the radio or full albums in whatever order the artist intended. That all changed in 2001, when the new-fangled MP3 technology got combined with my new CD burner.

In addition to the occasional series of CDs I had burned in order to keep abreast of new music, I had created a bunch of genre-specific mixes that could be used both in the car and at the gym. This week we will take a look at the second undated disc, which seems to contain mostly purchases I had made from iTunes, plus the then current Liz Phair single, which places the creation of this disc somewhere in late 2003 or early 2004.  So, without further ado, I bring you Undated, volume 2.

No Doubt – Just A Girl (Acoustic)

This bonus track from the digital version of the Rock Steady album was recorded live on German radio.

iTunes stats: 8 plays, most recently on 5/3/2012

The Ataris – Boys Of Summer

A cover version of the Don Henley classic.

iTunes stats: 8 plays, most recently on 1/22/2013

Tatu – All The Things You Said

I have not listened to this in the 2 months since it last appeared on one of these discs.

iTunes stats: 6 plays, most recently on 8/10/2011

Avril Lavigne – Skater Boi (Live)

A live version of her hit song from an EP that seems to no longer be available on iTunes.

iTunes stats: 5 plays, most recently on 6/7/2011

Avril Lavigne – Basket Case (Live)

A live cover version of the Green Day hit from an EP that seems to no longer be available on iTunes.

iTunes stats: 7 plays, most recently on 5/24/2012

Ludacris – Stand Up

This song earned Ludacris a Grammy nomination for Best Rap Solo Performance.

iTunes stats: 14 plays, most recently on 2/21/2013

Mix Tape Monday – March 2005

After my tape deck crapped out in 1997, I was stuck listening to either the radio or full albums in whatever order the artist intended.  That all changed in 2001, when the new-fangled MP3 technology got combined with my new CD burner.

So, we skip ahead to 2005 with this entry.  Perhaps nothing interesting happened in music in 2004.  Along with a couple of television theme songs, we have new music from Snoop Dogg, Tegan and Sara, and Garbage.

Letters To Cleo – Here And Now

The biggest hit for the Boston based band.

iTunes stats: 13 plays, most recently on 3/13/2012

Creedence Clearwater Revival – Fortunate Son

As President Bush’s second term gets under way, this song suddenly became relevant again.

iTunes stats: 4 plays, most recently on 8/1/2011

Andy Partridge – I Wonder Why The Wonderfalls

The theme song to the short-lived Fox show Wonderfalls.

iTunes stats: 10 plays, most recently on 5/19/2012

Nazareth – Love Hurts

The staple of classic rock stations in the late 80s and early 90s.

iTunes stats: 3 plays, most recently on 8/10/2011

Snoop Dogg – Drop It Like It’s Hot

The first song from Snoop Dogg that I’ve liked since his debut album.

iTunes stats: 6 plays, most recently on 3/16/2012

AC/DC – For Those About To Rock (We Salute You)

I suppose we have Artie Lange and the Howard Stern Show to thank for the inclusion of this classic.

iTunes stats: 1 play, on 7/30/2012

Ludacris – Get Back

The latest release from the Champaign-born rapper.

iTunes stats: 12 plays, most recently on 1/4/2013

Black Eyed Peas – Let’s Get It Started

The PC version of the ubiquitous hit that introduced the Black Eyed Peas to a mainstream audience.

iTunes stats: 5 plays, most recently on 10/2/2011

The Dandy Warhols – We Used To Be Friends

The theme song to the wonderful Veronica Mars program.

iTunes stats: 20 plays, most recently on 1/2/2013

Mix Tape Monday – Best of 2003

After my tape deck crapped out in 1997, I was stuck listening to either the radio or full albums in whatever order the artist intended.  That all changed in 2001, when the new-fangled MP3 technology got combined with my new CD burner.

I’m guessing this disc dates to late 2003 and includes some of the new songs from the previous disc along with anything else that came out throughout the year that I may have somewhat enjoyed.

Evanescence – Bring Me To Life

The first single that broke for Evanescence is the only song of theirs I’ve ever heard of.

iTunes stats: 6 plays, most recently on 9/7/2011

The Donnas – Take It Off

A big hit from their major label debut.

iTunes stats: 13 plays, most recently on 5/30/2012

Tatu – All The Things You Said

I have not listened to this in the 2 weeks since it last appeared on one of these discs.

iTunes stats: 6 plays, most recently on 8/10/2011

The Ataris – Boys Of Summer

The Don Henley cover is likely the only song of theirs anyone knows, much to their chagrin.

iTunes stats: 7 plays, most recently on 7/25/2012

50 Cent – In Da Club

This song has not held up at all.

iTunes stats: Never played

Foo Fighters – Times Like These (Acoustic)

The acoustic version of the Foo Fighters hit.

iTunes stats: 5 plays, most recently on 11/27/2010

Liz Phair – Why Can’t I

The first single from Liz Phair’s deliberate attempt to become more pop-oriented.

iTunes stats: 2 plays, most recently on 8/30/2011

Kelly Osbourne – Shut Up

Kelly’s attempt to turn the success of The Osbournes into a recording career kind of sputtered after this.

iTunes stats: 5 plays, most recently on 5/8/2012

Tegan And Sara – I Hear Noises

My introduction to the band that would become one of my favorites.

iTunes stats: 20 plays, most recently on 9/21/2011

Goodbye, iPhone 3G – Music Edition

As I wait for tomorrow’s delivery of my new iPhone 4S, it is time to say goodbye to the 3G that has been my trusty companion for nearly the past 3 1/2 years.  We’ve traveled the world together (well, at least Canada and the UK) and have listened to a lot of music.  Here is every song (all 1597 of them) I’ve listened to on the phone, with some (ok, very little) bonus commentary!

He’s a Pirate Klaus Badelt Pirates of the Caribbean (Soundtrack from the Motion Picture) 100
Gordon Beckham Intro 91
Let’s Go-Go-Go White Sox Captain Stubby and the Buccaneers 87

Boom P.O.D. Satellite 70
Don’t Stop Believin’ Journey Journey’s Greatest Hits 69
2008 White Sox Central Division Champs Montage Chris Tannehill WSCR 670 The Score 65

No surprise that the top 10 are all part of (or were part of) my White Sox victory playlist.  This gets played on the way home from every White Sox winner, plus the occassional ride to a game.  Continue reading →
