Opening Day

Today will be my 15th Opening Day for the White Sox, and my 12th in a row.  The first was in 1985, a blowout win against the Red Sox in rookie shortstop Ozzie Guillen’s first game in Chicago.  Other highlights include the 2005 1-0 victory against the Indians and the raising of the championship banner on Sunday Night Baseball in 2006.

Joining me for today’s game will be my niece and nephews.  A certain mascot should be stopping by sometime during the game to wish Michael a happy birthday.  Hopefully the weather holds out and the White Sox uphold their end of the bargain.

2012 Hall Of Fame Ballot

The ballot for next year’s Hall of Fame induction was released earlier this week.  Results will be announced on January 9th.  Here’s my thoughts on each candidate.

Jeff Bagwell – I think that the longtime Astros firstbaseman will eventually get in, but he may have to wait for a few years. 

Jeromy Burnitz – Ah, good old Fabe.  He has no chance, but will go down in history as the man who replaced Sammy Sosa in the Cubs lineup.

Vinny Castilla – A decent player who benefited greatly from the thin Colorado air.

Juan Gonzalez – Seemed destined for Cooperstown before injuries and his own self-importance got in the way.

Brian Jordan – A two sport star that had a solid career, but nothing more.

Barry Larkin – The leading vote getter among non-inductees last year, he should make it this year.

600!

Congratulations to Jim Thome, who hit home runs #599 and 600 tonight to help the Twins take a late lead against the Tigers, becoming only the eighth player in baseball history to reach that milestone.

 

Nearly 4 years ago, on September 16, 2007, I saw him hit his 500th in dramatic fashion, a walkoff against the Angels on Jim Thome Bobblehead Day.

2011 Halfway Point

A disappointing first half of the baseball season came to an end (a few weeks back).  Hopes of a pennant chase have thus far been thwarted by an anemic offense that is threatening to break some long held records, and not the good kind.

All Time Records (through 2010)

Now that the 2010 season has come to an end, let’s take a look at team’s overall records in games I have personally attended over my entire life.  Every game I can remember or have tracked down is included, even the postseason.  Teams that move (Expos/Nationals), change “city” names (California/Anaheim/Los Angeles Angels) or change team names (Devil Rays/Rays) are split out per incarnation.
