2015 Hall Of Fame Ballot – The Newcomers

mlb_hofThe BBWAA released their ballot for the Hall of Fame class of 2014 on Monday.  The results of the vote are due to be revealed on January 8th, with induction taking place next July.  After Frank Thomas, Greg Maddux, and Tom Glavine were elected in last year’s voting, the new ballot contains 17 holdovers along with 17 newcomers, which may start to cause a bit of a problem.  The current BBWAA rules limit the number of votes on one ballot to 10, and there may be more than 10 deserving candidates.  As they start to pile up, and even more deserving candidates become eligible, the BBWAA and the Hall may find themselves with a mess on their hands.

Tuesday, we looked at the returning candidates.  Now, on this day of giving thanks, it’s time to look at the newcomers and who will be thankful come January.

Rich Aurilia

He managed to put up a 15 year career, which got him on this list, but it will be a quick one and done for him.

Aaron Boone

While many Yankee fans would like to see him inducted for a certain post-season home run against the Red Sox in 2003, that won’t be enough to get him a second look.

Tony Clark

Again, a perfectly acceptable career, but will be lucky to get a sympathy vote from a hometown writer.

Carlos Delgado

Delgado finished his career a mere 27 home runs away from 500, which will likely get him some support, but, based on Fred McGriff’s experiences, not enough.

capt.hta15110270331.world_series__hta151Jermaine Dye

The MVP of the 2005 World Series is unlikely to get much in the way of support despite a solid career.

Darin Erstad

The longtime Angel is unlikely to get much support.

Cliff Floyd

Another player with a fine career, but no real question as to his worthiness for the hall.

All Season Batting Leaders – Through 2014

MLB: Cincinnati Reds at Los Angeles DodgersThree years ago, we took our first look at the offensive stat leaders per season for the all the games I’ve attended since 1984.  While there hasn’t been a whole lot of movement in the 3 seasons since, I figured the time was right to take another look.  So, without further ado, here’s the updated list.  We start, as always, with everyone’s favorite offensive stat:

#208 – Toby Hall

TobyHallWhiteSox

Name: Toby Hall

Rank: 208

Position: C

Years With White Sox: 2007-2008

Following the 2006 season, Toby Hall signed with the White Sox as a free agent to be the backup to A.J. Pierzynski.  His first season on the south side got off to a late start after he dislocated his shoulder during spring training.  He was activated off the DL on May 16, which, after finishing the season with a .207 average and a whopping 3 RBI, he admitted was a month too soon.

Given a full offseason to continue healing, Hall bounced back in 2008.  As the White Sox battled the Twins for the AL Central crown, Hall put up a .260 average.  He did run into some controversy in August, when he nearly re-injured his shoulder while trying to hit Jermaine Dye with a shaving cream pie.

Following the season, the White Sox declined his option for 2009 and allowed him to leave as a free agent, but his shoulder could no longer hold up to the rigors of catching and he never appeared in the major leagues again.

Hall’s numbers in a White Sox uniform, both for games I attended and overall, were:

#487 – Nick Swisher

Name: Nick Swisher

Rank: 487

Position: OF/1B

Year with White Sox: 2008

In January 2008, Kenny Williams pulled the trigger on a deal that would send three prospects to the Oakland A’s in exchange for Nick Swisher, a switch hitting outfielder/first baseman who could get on base and provide some pop.  Swisher was also supposed to be a great clubhouse presence, someone who could keep the team loose throughout the course of the season.

With Paul Konerko and Jermaine Dye entrenched at first base and right field respectively, the plan was to plug Swisher into left field.  Unfortunately, another off season pickup, Carlos Quentin, managed to earn the job out of spring training, leaving Swisher to play out of position for most of the season in center field.

To say things did not go as planned would be a bit of an understatement.  As the season wore on, and Swisher continued to not perform, his demeanor changed and you could say his attitude hurt the team almost as much as his .219 average.  When manager Ozzie Guillen dared to sit him on the bench occasionally down the stretch while trying to win the division, Swisher showed his true colors by complaining.  When he did play, he was so interested in trying to walk that the easiest way to get him out was to lay one right down the middle.

After the playoff loss to the Rays, Williams wasted no time in shipping him out to the Yankees, less than a year after he had been acquired.

Swisher’s numbers in a White Sox uniform, both for games I attended and overall, were: Continue reading →
