Mix Tape Monday Revisited Roundup

Between 1989, my sophomore year of high school, and 1995, my fourth year of college, I put together a nearly 20 volume collection of mix tapes, containing my favorite songs that I had gathered either from the radio, a cassette tape, or (eventually) CD. Three years ago, we looked back at all 20 volumes and which of my “favorite” songs I still listened to. Today, we revisit those mix tapes and see how things have changed in the last 3 years.

Last week, we finished up the last of the 20 volumes.  The 287 songs from 144 different bands or performers have been played an average of just over 8.5 times each, according to my iTunes stats, up from just over 5 times 3 years ago. Let’s take one final look back at the bands and songs that made up my youth.

Mix Tape Monday – Volume 8 Revisited

Between 1989, my sophomore year of high school, and 1995, my fourth year of college, I put together a nearly 20 volume collection of mix tapes, containing my favorite songs that I had gathered either from the radio, a cassette tape, or (eventually) CD. Three years ago, we looked back at all 20 volumes and which of my “favorite” songs I still listened to. Today, we revisit those mix tapes and see how things have changed in the last 3 years.

Volume 8 covers the winter and spring of 1993 and the second semester of my freshman year of college. The alternative influence starts to become more noticable, as both Pearl Jam and Nirvana make their first appearances alongside old mainstays like Poison, Bon Jovi, and Def Leppard. Besides that, we are treated to a lot of hip-hop and hair metal, with a small sampling pop, as always.

Side A

Bell Biv Devoe – Gangsta

The intended first single from the second Bell Biv Devoe record, which flopped, was dropped from the album, and now is lost to history.

Pearl Jam – Jeremy

The first appearance on these tapes by Pearl Jam, the song had a modest increase over the past 3 years.

Volume 6 takes us through the end of high school, through the summer, and into the beginning of my freshman year of college.  Sadly, this is not the original version of volume 6, which was lost after being borrowed by my sister for a party.  The steady stream of hair metal and pop starts to become overtaken by alternative and hip-hop.

Volume 5 takes us from the end of my junior year of high school, through the summer, and all the way to spring of my senior year, from mid 1991 through early 1992, and once again features a healthy dose of hair metal and pop.  It also includes the appearance of my first CD player, a Christmas gift in 1991.

Top 200 Albums – #197 – 206

itunes_imageMy latest desktop computer arrived in late 2007, at which point I transitioned all of my music off of my laptop. 2 iPods, 3 iPhones, and an iPad later, that computer is still my main repository of music, with iTunes updating its stats every time I listen to something.

Having already gone through cassette tapes and CDs, and digital music, it’s time to roll everything up with the Top 200 albums whose songs I’ve listened to as of September 2014, according to iTunes. Today we start at the bottom of the list and begin our journey with the 10 albums tied for 197th with 21 listens.

#198: Great White – …Twice Shy
iTunes stats: 21 plays
The fourth album from Great White makes this list on the backs of one song, which was the band’s biggest hit.

#197: Weezer – Maladriot
iTunes stats: 21 plays
Weezer’s fourth offering, released in 2002, had 2 songs make up their total.

#197: Various Artists – The Beavis and Butt-head Experience
iTunes stats: 21 plays
Cashing in on the cultural phenomenon that was Beavis and Butt-head, this compilation makes this list thanks to the animated duo’s cover, with Cher, of I Got You Babe.

#197: Various Artists – Billboard Top Hits: 1987
iTunes stats: 21 plays
This compliation album of the top pop hits of 1987 by bands that were willing to be included on a random compilation album places on this list thanks to 4 different tracks, from U2, Belinda Carlisle, Chris de Burgh, and Crowded House.

#197: Various Artists – 8 Mile (Soundtrack from the Motion Picture)
iTunes stats: 21 plays
The soundtrack to Eminem’s first (and, to date, only) movie rode his smash hit Lose Yourself to this spot.

Concert Flashback: Too Legit World Tour

92hammerDuring the spring of 1992, my friends and I were big fans on the R&B group Boyz II Men.  When we found out that they were coming to town, as one of the opening acts for the former MC Hammer’s Too Legit world tour, we decided to make this our first concert experience.  A little more than a week before high school graduation, a small group of us, which included at least myself, Scott, Tracie, Courtney, headed north to the Rosemont Horizon to see the show.

The scheduled performers for the evening were, in reverse order, Hammer, Boyz II Men, and Oaktown 357.  who I didn’t even realize were a female rap group until I just looked them up now on Wikipedia.  For reasons I don’t remember, the girls of Oaktown 357 did not perform that night, and instead were replaced by a little group called Jodeci.  While I hadn’t heard of them at the time, they would come to have a few hits that I would enjoy over the years.

Boyz II Men, who were the stars of the show as far as our small group was concerned, played the middle set.  They only had the one album out at the time, and hadn’t really hit it big yet.  Of course, later that year, their hit from the Boomerang soundtrack, End of the Road, would make them the biggest stars in music.  I don’t remember how many songs they ended up singing, but it couldn’t have been much more than 5 or 6.

Eventually, Hammer came out and, no matter what you think of his music, put on one hell of a show.  He was a few years removed from his U Can’t Touch This heyday and the follow-up, 2 Legit 2 Quit, did not have the success of its predecessor.  You wouldn’t know it from the show, as Hammer poured 100% effort to dance and rap, in that order, for the full house that had come out to see him.

It was definitely an experience.  From our perspective, we were the only white folks in attendance, which doesn’t seem likely today.  From the ticket stub, it doesn’t appear that we had great seats, but, being our first concert, we certainly didn’t know any better.  This was my last hip-hop show, and while something in the rock genre would probably have made more sense for my first show, it does make a funny story all these years later.

iTunes Top 100 Artists: #51-60

itunes_image

My latest desktop computer arrived in late 2007, at which point I transitioned all of my music off of my laptop. 2 iPods, 2 iPhones, and an iPad later, that computer is still my main repository of music, with iTunes updating its stats every time I listen to something.

Having already gone through cassette tapes and CDs, and digital music, it’s time to roll everything up with the Top 100 artists that I’ve listened to as of 8/21/2013, according to iTunes. Today we look at the the the next batch, numbers 51-60, which includes a nice mix of musical genres.

#51: Van Halen

iTunes stats: 56 plays

The multiple incarnations of the southern California band used 10 songs to make up their total.

#52: Patton Oswalt

iTunes stats: 50 plays

One album from the funny man comprises this total.

#53: 10,000 Maniacs

iTunes stats: 49 plays

A pretty impressive total considering it took only 3 songs to get it.

#53: Boyz II Men

iTunes stats: 49 plays

The stars of my first concert have 8 songs which made up this mark.

#55: Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers

iTunes stats: 48 plays

Ten different tunes make up the total for the rockers from Florida.

#56: Cheap Trick

iTunes stats: 46 plays

The group, who I saw in 1997 opening for the Stone Temple Pilots at the Elliot Hall of Music, placed 6 songs on the list to get this number.

#57: Nancy Faust

iTunes stats: 43 plays

The longtime White Sox organist makes the list thanks to a recording of her final rendition of Take Me Out To The Ballgame.

Goodbye, iPhone 4S – Music Edition

A little more than a week ago, I upgraded my phone from the iPhone 4S to the newly released iPhone 5S.  The biggest difference, aside from a slightly bigger screen, is the jump from 3G (or 4G, if you believe AT&T’s hype) to LTE.  I had the 4S for a little under 2 years, and in that time, we traveled the world together (well, at least going back to the UK) and have listened to a lot of podcasts and music. Here is every song (all 2079 of them) I’ve listened to on the phone, with some (ok, very little) bonus commentary.  Godspeed.

Let’s Go-Go-Go White Sox Captain Stubby and the Buccaneers 33
He’s a Pirate Klaus Badelt Pirates of the Caribbean (Soundtrack from the Motion Picture) 32
Take Me Out To The Ballgame Harry Caray 31
Thunderstruck AC/DC The Razors Edge 31
Gordon Beckham Intro 29
Na Na Hey Hey Kiss Him Goodbye Steam Billboard’s Top Rock ‘n’ Roll Hits: 1969 29
Don’t Stop Believin’ Journey Journey’s Greatest Hits 27
sox05_montage 27
We Are The Champions Queen Queen: Greatest Hits I & II 27
Your Love The Outfield Play Deep 27
2008 White Sox Central Division Champs Montage Chris Tannehill WSCR 670 The Score 25
Take Me Out To The Ballgame Nancy Faust 25
Harvester Of Sorrow Metallica …And Justice For All 20

You would hope that these numbers would have been higher, but this past season’s miserable performance by the White Sox has put the songs on their playlist out of mind more often than not.

Cannonball The Breeders The First 1000 Years- Rock 19
