Pirates All Time Leaders – Through 2025

pirates-primaryTo paraphrase from a famous movie, the one constant through all the years has been baseball.  With the winter meetings starting today, we continue our look at the all-time leaders in both offensive and defensive categories for all 30 teams. Today, we take a deeper dive into the Pittsburgh Pirates.

The Pirates began life in 1887 as the Alleghenys, before taking on the Pirates moniker in 1891.  I’ve seen 245 players don the Pirates uniform in the 49 games of theirs that I’ve attended live, including a double header sweep in 2003, enabling the Cubs to clinch their first NL Central title and a work outing in 2008 against the White Sox.

Pirates All Time Leaders – Through 2019

pirates-primaryWith baseball shut down because of the corona virus, I thought it would be an interesting time to look back at the all time leaders in both offensive and defensive categories for all 30 teams. We continue today with the Pittsburgh Pirates.

The Pirates began life in 1887 as the Alleghenys, before taking on the Pirates moniker in 1891.  I’ve seen them play 46 times, including a double header sweep in 2003, enabling the Cubs to clinch their first NL Central title and a work outing in 2008 against the White Sox.

#106 – Octavio Dotel

odotel

Name: Octavio Dotel

Rank: 106

Position: P

Years With White Sox: 2008-2009

Octavio Dotel joined the White Sox as a free agent on January 21, 2008, signing a two-year deal.  He became a work horse out of the bullpen for Ozzie Guillen during the 2008 season, going 4-4 with a 3.76 ERA in 72 games as the White Sox took home the Central Division title.  Dotel then appeared in all 4 games of the ALDS against the Rays, giving up 2 runs in 1 1/3 innings pitched.

2009 was more of the same for Dotel.  In 10 fewer appearances, he went 3-3, lowering his ERA to 3.32.  Following the season, Dotel became a free agent, ending his White Sox career.

Dotel’s numbers in a White Sox uniform, both for games I attended and overall, were:

#191 – David Aardsma

DavidAardsma2Name: David Aardsma

Rank: 191

Position: P

Year With White Sox: 2007

Following a decent 2006 season with the crosstown Cubs, David Aardsma was acquired by the White Sox in exchange for Neal Cotts.  2007 got off to a good start for Aardsma, as he struck out 23 batters in 15 2/3 innings pitched while putting up a 1.74 ERA in April.  Unfortunately, like the rest of the the White Sox, things took a dramatic turn for the worse.

Aardsma gave up a run per inning in May and, on June 3rd, he was sent back to Triple A Charlotte to try and get right.  He was recalled 2 weeks later after Dewon Day went down with an injury.  Aardsma, and the White Sox, played out the string, but did not improve any.  He finished the season with a 6.40 ERA, appearing in only 25 games.  Following the season, he was designated for assignment, opening up a roster spot for the signing of Octavio Dotel.  In January, he was traded to the Red Sox for 2 minor league pitchers.

Aardsma’s numbers in a White Sox uniform, both for games I attended and overall, were:

#244 – Tony Peña

Tony+PenaName: Tony Peña

Rank: 244

Position: P

Years With White Sox: 2009-2011

Tony Peña, the pitcher, joined the White Sox via a July 7, 2009 trade that sent Brandon Allen to the Diamondbacks.  Peña was expected to bolster the bullpen for the remainder of 2009 and then take over Octavio Dotel’s role, who would be a free agent following the season.  Things started out well for Peña, who put up a 3.75 ERA down the stretch for the White Sox, a half run better than he had done for the Diamondbacks.

Things started to fall apart in 2010.  With Dotel gone, Peña was slated to become the main workhorse out of the pen, but control issues limited him to 52 games, including 3 spot starts.  His ERA jumped to 5.10 as he was relegated to long relief and mop up duty.

Unfortunately, 2011 was not any better for Peña.  His ERA jumped up to 6.10 as he made 17 relief appearances over the season’s first two months.  On May 29, he was placed on the disabled list with right elbow tendinitis, which is where he would spend the rest of the season.

He was released by the White Sox following the season, and he would never pitch in the major leagues again.

Pena’s numbers in a White Sox uniform, both for games I attended and overall, were:
