2018 Tickets – Northside Edition
After making their third consecutive NLCS appearance last season, the Cubs have once again kept their season ticket package toned down for 2018, letting the product on the field speak for itself. We start, as usual, with the box, which highlights the expected stars of the 2018 season, including Jon Lester, Anthony Rizzo, Kris Bryant, Willson Contreras, and Javy Baez.
Inside the box, aside from the tickets themselves, were a few “goodies”, as has been the custom the last few years. The highlight is a print of the artwork found on the tickets themselves, highlighting the expected stars of the 2018 season. In addition to that, there was a commemorative season holder pin, a season ticket holder patch, a cell phone wallet, and some new ticket lanyards.
Finally, the tickets themselves. The Cubs have moved away from the action shots of players for this years tickets, going instead with artists interpretations, but have switched the ticket orientation back to portrait from landscape, which is somewhat disappointing.
LCS Batting Leaders
The Cubs prepare to make their third straight NLCS appearance tonight in Los Angeles, in a rematch of last year’s battle against the Dodgers, which the Cubs won in 6 games. Let’s look at the offensive leaders in the now 9 LCS games I’ve attended, games 1, 6, and 7 of the 2003 NLCS, games 1 and 2 of the 2005 ALCS, games 3 and 4 of the 2015 NLCS, and games 1 and 6 of the 2016 NLCS.

Bad Jersey Choices
Last fall, while waiting outside Wrigley Field to get in for the World Series, I saw a young gentleman wearing an Arismendy Alcantara jersey and thought, wow, what a colossal mistake this man has made. I thought about starting a Tumblr/Twitter account to track poor jersey choices, but never really got around to it. As this season has gotten underway, I’ve kept an eye out for instances of people who really should have put more thought in to their apparel purchases.
On the north side of town, it has been a total strikeout. Seeing how everyone has renewed their jersey purchases with the World Series championship, there is just a sea of Rizzos, Bryants, and, of course, Rosses. On the south side of town, I finally hit paydirt on Sunday, when I came across someone who was so enthralled by last year’s signing of broken down catcher Alex Avila, that he went out and bought the jersey. A long lasting tribute to a one-season player who spent much of his time here on the disabled list.
MVP
One year after being named NL Rookie of the Year, Cubs third baseman Kris Bryant took home MVP honors, becoming the fourth player ever to win both honors in back to back years. Bryant, the fist Cub to win the award since Sammy Sosa in 1998, puts a final cherry on the ice cream sundae that was the 2016 season. Teammate Anthony Rizzo, meanwhile, came in fourth place for the second straight year.
With award season over, it’s time to turn the page to 2017, where the Cubs will enter the season as defending champs for the first time since 1909, and Bryant will attempt to duplicate his performance.
2016 BBWAA Award Predictions
The Baseball Writers of America have announced the finalists for their awards for the just completed baseball season, which will be announced next week. It is a good bet that few of my original predictions for the winners will be accurate. Hopefully, these new predictions will be slightly better, especially since I’ll have a 33% chance of being right.
American League
Most Valuable Player: Jose Altuve, Mookie Betts, Mike Trout
Mike Trout was my pre-season selection to win the award this year and, sadly, I think the failure of the Angels to compete has left his accomplishments unappreciated. My guess is Mookie Betts gets rewarded for the division-winning Red Sox.
Cy Young Award: Corey Kluber, Rick Porcello, Justin Verlander
If the voting had taken place after the post-season, then Corey Kluber would likely get more love for leading the Indians within a game of winning the World Series. So, I’m going to assume Rick Porcello, with his gaudy win total, will take home the award.
Manager of the Year: Jeff Banister, Terry Francona, Buck Showalter
Once again, I didn’t make any predictions for this award prior to the season. I’m guessing Terry Francona will win the award for the second time.
Rookie of the Year: Michael Fulmer, Gary Sanchez, Tyler Naquin
Another award I didn’t predict prior to the season. I imagine that Michael Fulmer will be taking home the award.
National League
Joy In Wrigleyville
After falling behind 3 games to 1 against the Indians in the 2016 World Series, the Cubs rallied back to force a Game 7 for the ages. After taking an early lead, the Cubs found themselves tied at the end of 9 innings thanks to an overused Aroldis Chapman. A brief rain delay before the 10th let them catch their breath and they plated 2 runs before giving up 1 in the bottom of the 10th. With the tying run on base and the winning run at the plate, Mike Montgomery managed to get Michael Martinez to ground out to Kris Bryant, ending the game and giving the Cubs their first World Series title since 1908 and the cities first title since 2005.
The Cubs spent most of 2016 as the best team in baseball and appeared to have the right attitude regarding the so-called curses that had stopped the team from even appearing in the Fall Classic since 1945. Once the team won the NL Pennant two weekends ago, it looked like nothing would stop them from taking the title, especially not an Indians team that had a decimated starting rotation and was forced to use their remaining pitchers on short rest for the entire series. After splitting the first two games at Progressive Field, the Cubs came home to Wrigley Field feeling confident, but dropped to next 2 games to leave the Indians one win away from their first title since 1948, the second longest title-drought in the Major Leagues. Facing elimination, the Cubs managed to win the next 3 games.
With a throw from Kris Bryant to Anthony Rizzo, the Cubs managed to erase 108 years of futility and their identity as the “lovable losers.” Nobody knows what the future now holds for the team. There will be increased expectations and, probably, less tolerance for failure from a fan base that has had more than its fair share. But those are worries for next spring. For now, the Cubs, and their fans, can enjoy being on top of the baseball world for the first time since the Teddy Roosevelt administration.
Playoff Batting Leaders
