By The Numbers – 74

In 1929, uniform numbers appeared on the back of baseball jerseys for the first time, thanks to the Indians and the Yankees.  By 1937, numbers finally appeared across all uniforms, both home and away, across both major leagues.  Since that time, 81 distinct numbers have been worn by members of the White Sox, while the Cubs boast 76.

Today, we continue our look at those players, picking our favorite, if not the best, player to wear each uniform number for both Chicago teams with #74.  Once again, a single player has donned #74 while playing in Chicago, debuting in 2019 for the White Sox.

Acquired from the Cubs, along with Dylan Cease, in the 2017 Jose Quintana trade, Eloy Jimenez made his major league debut for the White Sox on Opening Day 2019.  In just 2 short years, he has made a name for himself, finishing 4th in Rookie of the Year voting in 2019 and earning the Silver Slugger award for the corona virus shortened 2020 season.

The End Of An Era

baseballs2Now that baseball is back with the designated hitter in both leagues, the potential exists for the complete end of pitchers hitting, a tradition going back well over 100 years.  While pitchers may return to the dish in 2021, assuming there is a “normal” 2021 season, it is likely that the next CBA, which will take effect following the 2021 season, will implement a universal DH permanently.

Last August 24th, I took in my final National League game of the 2019 season, meaning that Cubs starter Jose Quintana may very well end up as the last pitcher I will ever see bat.  Let’s take a look at the batting leaders among pitchers in all of the games that I have seen in person between 1984 and 2019.

Very little difference from last year with no new faces, but a few categories have some movement on the leader board. The Decade In Baseball – Pitching Leaders

baseballs3The 2010s have drawn to a close and its time to take a look back at the previous decade.  Today, we are finishing off our look back at 10 years worth of baseball with the pitching leaders for the 385 games I attended between 2010 and 2019.

In addition to the regular season, these totals include 2 wild card games, 3 trips to the NLDS, 3 NLCS appearances, and the 2016 World Series.  Not too many surprises on these charts.

All Season Pitching Leaders – Through 2019
