FB10: Week 36

Another week where I kept trending in the wrong direction.  The week got off to a slow start, falling 14 steps shy of 3300.  Monday fell 37 steps short of Sunday’s total.  A big drop on Tuesday left me 35 steps away from 2200 steps.  My final baseball game of the season led to my best day of the week on Wednesday, coming 15 steps short of 4100.  Thursday fell back down again to 3500 steps.  Friday saw a slight improvement, going up to 3800 steps.   Another improvement left me 27 steps away from, 4000 on Saturday.

2024 Predictions Revisited

Six months ago, I made my annual predictions as to who would win what.  With the Wild Card round in full swing, it is time to revisit those predictions and see what, if anything, I got right.

American League

East: Rays

Well, after missing the postseason for the first time since 2016, the Yankees stormed back to take the AL East crown.  Meanwhile, the Rays struggled early and never really found their groove.

Central: Guardians

Would you look at that?  I got one right, as the Guardians led a resurgent AL Central for most of the season.

West: Mariners

The Mariners did lead the division for a while, but, at the end of the day, the Astros managed to win the division for the fourth straight year and the seventh year out of the last eight.

Wild Cards: Astros, Blue Jays, Yankees

I guess I can take solace in the fact that two of these choices are headed to the post-season, though as division champions.  A surprisingly strong AL Central, thanks to getting to face the putrid White Sox many times, landed two Wild Card spots with the Royals and the Tigers.  The Orioles snagged the top spot.

AL Champion: Yankees

The Yankees look to have the hardest path, having to face either the Tigers, the hottest team in baseball heading into the post-season, or the Orioles, against whom they lost eight of their thirteen contests this year.  I hate to say it, but the Astros may make another appearance in the Fall Classic.

Cy Young: Tristan McKenzie

McKenzie struggled this year and split the year between Cleveland and Triple A Columbus.  Tiger starter Tarik Skubal looks to be the front-runner.

MVP: Julio Rodriguez

Another wrong guess.  Aaron Judge will probably take it home for the second time in three seasons.

Fifty Years Of Music – 2009

Fifty years ago, I made my first appeared on the Earth.  In celebration, we are going to take a look at the year-end Billboard Hot 100 singles chart for each year of my life and see what songs resonated with me at the time and if they continue to do so to this day.

We continue our look back at the music of my lifetime with 2009, the year I celebrated my 35th birthday.  Only twelve of these songs remain familiar to me today, with half of them appearing in my collection in one way or another.

#62: Jay-Z featuring Alicia Keys – Empire State of Mind
iTunes stats: N/A

Spending five weeks atop the Hot 100, it was Jay-Z’s first #1 hit as lead artist.

#55: Coldplay – Viva la Vida
iTunes stats: N/A

The group’s first US #1 hit, it spent a single week atop the charts in June of 2008.

#29: Miley Cyrus – Party in the U.S.A.
iTunes stats: N/A

Spending three weeks at #2, it was Cyrus’ most successful single to date.

#25: Katy Perry – Hot n Cold

Perry’s follow-up to I Kissed a Girl peaked at #3.

iTunes stats: 28 plays

Winner of three Grammy awards, this breakthrough single reached #4.

Nominated for three Grammy awards, it reached #2 on the Hot 100 while topping the Hot Country Songs chart.

#8: Beyonce – Single Ladies (Put a Ring on It)
iTunes stats: N/A

Spending four non-consecutive weeks atop the Hot 100 between the end of 2008 and the start of 2009, the track garnered three Grammy wins.

#5: Taylor Swift – Love Story
iTunes stats: 1 play

Topping out at #4 on the Hot 100, the single spent 49 weeks on the chart.

#4: Black Eyed Peas – I Gotta Feeling
iTunes stats: 33 plays

The group’s second consecutive #1 single, it spent fourteen weeks atop the Hot 100.

#3: Lady Gaga featuring Colby O’Donis – Just Dance

The singer’s debut single, it spent three weeks at #1 in the winter of 2009.

#2: Lady Gaga – Poker Face
iTunes stats: N/A

The singer’s second single, it spent a single week at #1 in the spring of 2009.

#1: Black Eyed Peas – Boom Boom Pow
iTunes stats: 29 plays

The lead single from the group’s fifth studio album, it spent twelve weeks at #1 and, combined with its follow-up, gave the band 26 consecutive weeks, from mid-April until mid-October, with the #1 song in the nation.

Book 42 (of 52) – Kittentits

Kittentits – Holly Wilson

A ten-year-old girl in Calumet City runs away to her pen pal in Bronzeville after her supposed best friend apparently dies in a ballooning accident.  Living with a psychic and a ghost, she plans to summon the ghost of her mother on New Year’s Eve at the World’s Fair.

Kittentits, a vulgar coming of age story from Holly Wilson, is certainly something.  If it weren’t for the local references, including a late appearance by one Bozo the Clown, I don’t know if I would have even finished this.  I wish the author well on her future endeavors, but I don’t think I will be a repeat consumer of her work.

The Wrong Kind Of History

After staving off their ignoble date with history for the final homestand of the season, the White Sox met their date with history on Friday night, losing 4-1 to the Tigers to notch their 121st loss of the season, a total unmatched in modern MLB history.  Owner Jerry Reinsdorf had his fingerprints all over this one, on both sides of the field.  The Tigers, managed by A.J. Hinch, who was then-GM Rick Hahn’s leading choice to manage the White Sox before Reinsdorf insisted on hiring Tony LaRussa for a second go-around, and announced by Jason Benetti, who Reinsdorf and henchman Brooks Boyer drove away from the White Sox booth this past off-season, clinched a playoff berth while handing the White Sox their record-breaking loss.

Last fall, when Reinsdorf promoted Chris Getz to General Manager after firing Hahn and Kenny Williams, he said, “One of the things that I owe the fans is to get better as fast as we can possibly get better.”  He later added, “I realized that if I brought someone in from the outside it’s going to take them a year. He’s going to have to evaluate everyone in the organization.”  Well, both Reinsdorf and Getz now own this year.  The most losses in the 124 years of modern baseball history and second of all-time to the 1899 Cleveland Spiders.  In the conversation for the worst team of all time.  And outside of a handful of promising pitching prospects, most of whom have already debuted and contributed to this season’s history-making finish, very little help on the way from the minor league system.  Speaking as a fan, I would have gladly traded that year for competence.  Something that is sorely lacking on the corner of 35th and Shields.

FB10: Week 35

Another disappointing week as I keep trending in the wrong direction.  The week got off to an ok start, scoring 4300 steps on Sunday.  Monday ended up as the high point of the week despite falling 11 steps shy of 4400.  A big drop on Tuesday left me with only 2900 steps.  Things got even worse on Wednesday, which left me 10 steps away from 2700.  Thursday saw a slight improvement, going all the way up to 3100 steps.  Friday was even better, finishing 29 steps shy of 3400.  A very slight decline on Saturday put me at 3300 steps.
