#197 – Jerry Reuss

Rank: 197

Position: P

Years With White Sox: 1988-1989

Jerry Reuss signed with the White Sox toward the end of spring training in 1988, joining the rotation just 2 victories shy of 200 for his career.  He had to wait until May for the achievement, a 3-0 victory over the Orioles.

He finished the season with 13 wins, tops on the team that finished with a 71-90 record.  He also had the second lowest ERA among the team’s starters, coming in at 3.44 in 29 starts.

In 1989, Reuss, 39, along with 41 year old catcher Carlton Fisk, made history by becoming the oldest battery ever to start on opening day, surpassing pitcher Johnny Niggeling and catcher Rick Ferrell of the 1944 Washington Senators while beating the Angels 9-2.  That may have been the high point of the season, though, as his ERA ballooned up to 5.06 in 23 games.  With the White Sox again on their way to a 90 loss season, they traded Reuss to the Brewers in exchange for Brian Drahman.

Ruess returned to the White Sox for spring training in 1990, but did not make the team and was released.

Reuss’ numbers in a White Sox uniform were:

#198 – Jose Canseco

JCansecoName: Jose Canseco

Rank: 198

Position: DH

Year With White Sox: 2001

When Frank Thomas went down for the season in late April of 2001, the defending AL Central champs found themselves needing some help offensively.  On June 21, they turned to former all star, and current Newark Bear, Jose Canseco.

Canseco appeared in 76 games for the White Sox as they fell to third place in the Central division.  He put up respectable numbers, hitting .258 with 16 home runs.  Following the season, he became a free agent and, after a brief stint in the Expos organization, he returned to the White Sox in 2002, appearing in 18 games for Triple A Charlotte.  At the end of the season, he was released.

Canseco’s numbers in a White Sox uniform, both for games I attended and overall, were:

The Force Awakens

1351633321449ozd0uThe first Star Wars film under Disney’s purview, Episode VII, has finished principle photography and now has a name.  The Force Awakens hits theaters next Christmas, and, to date, I have managed to stay mostly spoiler free.

Part of the reason for that is the utter disappointment that was the last trilogy of films.  Thanks to those, I have no real burning desire for the new films, so there has been little build up that I have been paying attention to.  Maybe things will change as we get closer to the film’s release date.

GF4 – Week 17

Y4Week17A disappointing week, brought down by a wasted weekend.  The best day of the week was Monday, as I celebrated the 40th anniversary of my birth.  The rest of the week was nothing to write home about, with diminishing returns through Halloween on Friday.  The weekend was a lost cause that killed the whole week, which I spent mostly emptying out the DVR.

Top 200 Albums – #158 – 163

itunes_imageMy latest desktop computer arrived in late 2007, at which point I transitioned all of my music off of my laptop. 2 iPods, 3 iPhones, and an iPad later, that computer is still my main repository of music, with iTunes updating its stats every time I listen to something.

Having already gone through cassette tapes and CDs, and digital music, it’s time to roll everything up with the Top 200 albums whose songs I’ve listened to as of September 2014, according to iTunes. Today we continue climbing up the list and look at the 6 albums tied for 158th with 26 listens.

#158: TLC – Ooooooohhh…On The TLC Tip
iTunes stats: 26 plays
3 songs make up this total for TLC’s debut album, which I remember getting at Musicland along with Toad the Wet Sprocket’s Fear.

#158: The Presidents Of The United States Of America – The Presidents Of The United States Of America
iTunes stats: 26 plays
The debut album from the POTUSA also makes the charts based on 3 songs.

#158: Republica – Republica
iTunes stats: 26 plays
Only 2 songs make up this total for the band from Windsor.

#158: The Beatles – With The Beatles [2009 Stereo Remaster]
iTunes stats: 26 plays
This album, and all of the Beatles albums, would be much higher, but I lost all of the old counts for their albums when I upgraded to the remastered versions in 2009.

#158: Guns ‘N’ Roses – Use Your Illusion II
iTunes stats: 26 plays
5 songs make up the total from this album, one of the 6 CDs I owned when I left for college in August of 1992.

#158: Black Eyed Peas – The E.N.D.
iTunes stats: 26 plays
This total is split evenly between 2 songs, Boom Boom Pow and I Gotta Feeling.

Book 17 (of 52) – We Appreciate Your Enthusiasm

We Appreciate Your Enthusiasm: The Oral History Of Q101 - James VanOsdol

We Appreciate Your Enthusiasm: The Oral History Of Q101 – James VanOsdol

In 1992, Q101 flipped their format from adult contemporary to alternative rock, starting a 19 year journey that took them to both the top and bottom of Chicago’s radio rankings.  James VanOsdol, one of the jocks from the station’s mid-90s heyday, put together this history of the station, starting with it’s switch from Murphy in the Morning to the Cure in 1992 to the station’s swansong in 2011, ending as they started with Friday, I’m In Love.

I started listening to Q101 probably soon after they became Chicago’s New Rock Alternative, which coincided with the end of my senior year of high school.  Despite going to college 120 miles away, in Backwater, Indiana, it would not be an understatement to say that the station, and the music it played, was the soundtrack to my college years, and looking back to those years was easily my favorite part of the book.  Hearing recollections from all of the familiar names from back then, Robert Chase, Samantha James, “Join Me” Steve Fisher, and Wendy & Bill, brings me back to that time.

In 1998, Mancow moved his morning madhouse to Q101 from Rock 103.5 and the feel of the station started to change, which was part of the reason I stopped listening as frequently.  The music became harder, Tori Amos and Jewel gave way to Limp Bizkit and Linkin Park, to connect with Mancow’s audience and nuMetal was not something I was into.  I would still tune in occassionally, but not nearly as often.  While this is what pushed me away from the station as a listener, the stories from this time period are fascinating.  The culture clash between the Q101 people and the Mancow people is probably deserving of a book all of its own.

By the time Mancow left in 2006, I had left terrestrial radio behind for Sirius.  Alt Nation and Lithium were now my go-to channels for my alternative music fix, so this era of Q101 I was mostly unfamiliar with.  When the station was sold in June of 2011, it didn’t really register in my world.  I can’t remember if I tuned in on the final night, July 14, 2011, or caught a stream or YouTube of it later, but I heard the end, when a bunch of “current” and former jocks got together to say goodbye, exiting as they entered nearly 20 years earlier with Friday, I’m In Love.

This book came out 2 years ago, and, in the time since, the 101.1 frequency has gone through multiple formats and is once again playing alternative music under the call letters of WKQX, though not the Q101 name.  A few weeks back, I was in a friend’s car where I heard the “new” station for the first time, and heard a Live song from 1994.  In a way, it was like nothing had ever changed.

It’s Hard To Hold A Candle In The Cold November Rain

IMG_0550As the calendar turns to November, we celebrate Mr. Danny, who will become a teenager.  The main photo is from last summer, when he couldn’t get the fingerprint scanner to work while trying to enter Disney World.

We also take a look back at him through the years, including trips to the White Sox World Series parade in 2005 and our trip to Universal Studios in 2010. Continue reading →

GF4 – Week 16

Y4Week16Another successful week, with 4 days over 5500 steps and only one day, Saturday, below 5000 steps.  Thursday was the day of days, as I finished at an even 5000 steps.  Nothing too exciting during the work week, and Friday and Sunday benefited from walks around the neighborhood.  Saturday was helped along by a trip to the grocery store.

15 (and 40) Candles

photoA double helping of birthday cake today, as Angelina celebrates her 15th birthday and I bid a fond farewell to my 30s and turn the big 4-0.  This picture was taken exactly one year ago today, as we celebrated our birthday last year at her piano recital.  This year, we will likely not see each other on our birthday for the first time since she was born, thanks to Danny and a band concert.
