June marks the end of the school year and, for Danny, the end of his grammar school experience. We look forward to his upcoming graduation with a photo of him from last summer’s Cub Season Ticket Holder Family Day at Wrigley Field, playing catch on the outfield grass with his brother and, I hope, favorite uncle.

FB2: Week 17
The week got off to a slow start on Sunday despite a trip down to US Cellular Field to watch the White Sox eke out a victory against the Royals. Monday saw a bit of a recovery, but was a standard work day. Tuesday was the star of the week, thanks to an after-work trip down to see the White Sox lose to the Indians that finished with nearly 13,000 steps. Wednesday and Thursday were back to the normal work day activities, with Thursday getting a small boost thanks to Danny’s graduation.. Friday fell a bit below my goal thanks to an early exit from work for the long weekend. Saturday saw a nice bounce back thanks to a long walk around the neighborhood.

iTunes Top 200: #21 – 30
3 years ago, we first counted down the then Top 100 songs in my iTunes library. Since that time, I’ve successfully managed to migrate my music collection to a new PC with the stats intact. So, I figured it was time to take another look, expanding out the field to the top 200 songs, based on number of plays as of January 1, 2016.
We continue today with the 10 songs that comprise #s 21-30, with plays throughout the 30s, four of which come from the same band and another three are television show theme songs.

#88 – Steve Lyons
Name: Steve Lyons
Rank: 88
Position: 3B/OF
Years With White Sox: 1986-1990
Steve Lyons was acquired by the White Sox at the end of June in 1986 in the deal that sent Tom Seaver to the Red Sox. “I’ve liked him since he came into professional baseball,” GM Ken Harrelson said. “The only reason we were able to get him is that Boston is in a divisional race.” Lyons appeared in 42 games for the White Sox following the trade, starting 35 of them, and hit a disappointing .203 while finding his way into manager Jim Fregosi’s doghouse.
Lyons saw his average improve in 1987, though it didn’t necessarily add up to additional playing time. Splitting time between Hawaii and Chicago, he appeared in only 76 games and saw a mere 193 at bats.
With an improved relationship with Fregosi in 1988, Lyons stepped in to become the regular third baseman after the Kenny Williams experiment came to an end in May. While his offense was serviceable enough, he struggled defensively, finishing the year with 25 errors. “It’s a huge embarrassment,” Lyons conceded. “I’m just not doing the job. I hate to think that our pitchers are scared of me playing third base, but that would be a natural thought.”
1989 saw Lyons move primarily to second base. The biggest moment of his season came at Yankee Stadium in June when a woman ran onto the field and accosted Lyons in the on-deck circle, giving him a big kiss. He finished the year hitting .264 with a career high 50 RBI.
With the White Sox returning to contention in 1990, Lyons saw himself out of a starting job. He clashed with new manager Jeff Torborg over his diminished playing time, due to the arrival of Robin Ventura at third base and the commitment to Scott Fletcher at second base. He managed some late-inning duty at first base, until Frank Thomas joined the big league club in August. In his new role, his average dropped to .192. The most famous, or infamous, moment of his career came on July 16 against the Tigers, when, after sliding into first base for a bunt single, he lost track of where he was and dropped his pants to remove the dirt from his slide. He quickly raised them back up, but the damage was done and a legend was born.
Despite his clashes with Torborg, Lyons managed to break camp with the White Sox in 1991, but lasted 4 games into the season, without getting in to any of them, before being released to make room for Charlie Hough, who was coming off the disabled list. “I started seeing there wasn’t an opportunity for me to get on the field anywhere,” said Lyons. “They had other guys to do the same kind of things that I was going to do.”
Lyons’ numbers in a White Sox uniform, both for games I attended and overall, were:
Book 13 (of 52) – Heat
My second attempt to acquire and read this book was much more successful, though maybe fate was trying to keep me from something. In this tale from author Nancy Holder, ancient demons from China plot to thaw out magical dragons and take over the world, attacking both in Sunnydale and Los Angeles. Buffy and Angel are forced to reunite in order to stop the threat and save the world.
Unlike her other works in this franchise, Holder’s output this time was a bit of a slog to get through. Perhaps if less time was spent on the demons and where they came from and why they are attacking and more time was spent with out heroes, it would have been a bit more enjoyable. But, it is what it is and my latest foray into the Buffyverse comes to an end.

Another great week, with every day surpassing the 6000 step plateau for the second consecutive week. Things got off to a good start on Sunday, thanks to a nice walk around the neighborhood. The work week was pretty non-descript, except for Wednesday, which broke the 10,000 step barrier thanks to yet another neighborhood walk. Saturday was a return to baseball at US Cellular Field.

A good week, as I surpassed my 6,000 step goal every day. Things got off to a good start on Sunday thanks to a Mother’s Day trip to Brookfield Zoo. The work week was pretty uneventful until Friday, where some pizza screw ups led to a lot of walking around the house waiting for deliveries. Saturday just managed to sneak across the 6000 step plateau thanks to a trip to the grocery store.

Changes On The Dial
For the first time since 1995, WGN will be an independent television station this fall after announcing that they were not renewing their contract with the CW. Starting September 1, CW programming will move to WPWR, owned by Fox. WGN was the flagship station when the WB network launched in 1995 and became Chicago’s CW affiliate when the WB merged with UPN in 2006.
What does this mean for viewers? Initially, not much, beyond some schedule stability. CW programming won’t have to compete with live sporting events on WGN anymore and WGN won’t have to farm out a certain number of its sporting events to other stations. So no more Saturday night episodes of The Flash and more White Sox and Cubs games back on WGN. Long term? Well, I’ve already seen one article calling for the return of The Bozo Show. I guess anything is possible.
