FB8 – Week 44

A week of vacation plus warmer weather led to improved numbers.  The week got off to a better week on Sunday, registering 4300 steps.  My step total rose by 33 steps on Monday.  A trip to the movie theater and the store turned into a decrease, as I finished 7 steps shy of 3500.  Wednesday was a busy day, picking Angelina up from the airport and taking her to doctor before going out to see a stage version of Clue with both her and Danny and leaving me 15 steps away from 5900.  Thanksgiving festivities on Thursday led to the week’s low point, finishing with just 2300 steps.  Friday saw a big improvement, coming 18 steps short of 4300.  Saturday fell off again, just barely surpassing 3000 steps.

Travelling The 50 States – Indiana

Over my 47 years, I’ve done my fair share of travelling across these United States.  I thought it would be an interesting experiment go look back at those trips to each of the 31 states I have visited (62% isn’t bad, is it?) and see if, and when, I may be returning.  Working in alphabetical order, we start today with the 19th state to be added to the Union: Indiana.

State: Indiana
Joined the Union: 1816
Visits: 1100+

From the fall of 1992 through the spring of 1997, I matriculated at Purdue University in West Lafayette, Indiana.  Accounting for breaks, weekends home, and other holidays, I estimate I would have spent over 1100 days in the Hoosier State.

While it is possible that I visited the state of Indiana at some time during my youth, given its proximity to the Chicagoland area, the first confirmed visit would have been in the early 90s, when I made my campus visit to Purdue.  I can’t say that i have any particular memories from this trip, but I’m fairly sure it happened.  Starting in August of 1992, West Lafayette became my home away from home for the next five years.  In December of 1993, I made my first visit to Indianapolis for a double header of Purdue women’s and men’s basketball at Market Square Arena.

As I was stopped at a gas station before getting on I-65 on my way home after graduation, I said that I would never return to the state of Indiana again.  That pledge lasted a little more than two years, as I returned to campus in September of 1999 to see Purdue defeat Notre Dame at Ross-Ade Stadium.  I would return again in December of 2000 for the final game of the season, seeing Purdue defeat IU and earn their first trip to the Rose Bowl since 1967.

My next trip to Indiana came in March of 2001, when I saw the Monkees at the Star Plaza Theatre in Merrillville.  In November of 2004, I returned once again to my old stomping grounds to see Purdue once again defeat Indiana at Ross-Ade Stadium.  I made two football trips the following year, watching Purdue fall to Notre Dame in October and defeating Illinois in November.  In 2006, I made my first visit to South Bend with friends from work to see Notre Dame once again defeat the Boilermakers at Notre Dame Stadium.

My next trip to Indiana came in November of 2008, when Purdue managed to defeat Michigan at Ross-Ade Stadium.  The following September, it was another loss against Notre Dame.  In October of 2011, there was another family clash as Purdue defeated Illinois by a touchdown.  Two months later, I spent New Year’s Eve of 2011 at Mackey Arena, watching Purdue defeat the Fighting Illini in my first basketball game back on campus since graduating in 1997.  I returned a little more than a year later on the second day of 2013 for another successful tilt against the Illini at Mackey Arena.

In 2013, I made the mistake of returning to Ross-Ade stadium in September with a work friend, as her husband’s alma mater, Northern Illinois, throttled Purdue.  In March of 2015, a trip to Mackey Arena saw the basketball team beat the Illini, but the football tilt that November went the other way. 2022 Calendar

After a year of old pictures thanks to the corona virus murdering 2020, we are back in the game with next year’s calendar and, now that Christmas has come and gone, we can unveil the cover to this year’s calendar gift, given annually to my mom and sister, and made up of pictures I have taken throughout the year.  Lack of travel made getting pictures of Angelina difficult, but between last Christmas and this Thanksgiving, we were able to make it work.   As in year’s past. the calendar was produced by the good folks at Shutterfly and we will unveil each month’s photo(s) on the first day of the month throughout 2022.

This year’s cover features Angelina, Danny, and Michael masked up as we visited the primates from South America at Brookfield Zoo.

Fitbit VII – Week 44

Yet another disappointing week, which should have been boosted at the end by yet another football game, but was not.  Things got off to a poor start on Sunday, as I finished with 3500 steps.  Monday was slightly worse, as I dropped down to 3400 steps.  Tuesday saw a big increase, jumping all the way up to 4300 steps.  Wednesday fell back down again a bit, down to 4100 steps.  Thanksgiving festivities saw Thursday, fall back down 3200 steps.  Friday was the high point of the week, thanks to a trip back down to Purdue to bring Danny back to campus and to watch his band practice, earning me 5300 steps.  A rainy morning on Saturday meant skipping the football game and driving home, leaving me 20 steps shy of 4700.

Fitbit Year 5

year ago, I set a goal of 2,730,000 steps, an average of 7500 steps per day. Thanks in part to only 12 weeks where I managed to meet that combined daily goal, I fell 237,254 short of my challenge, the first time I’ve failed to surpass my yearly goal since 2014 under the old GlobalFit program. My average step total per week was 47,937.42, which comes out to about 6848.203 per day. The median weekly total was 44,710.  My best week was Week 19, where trips to Baltimore and Washington DC propelled me over 105,900 steps for the week.  My worst week was Week 44, where Thanksgiving left me wanting.

For the upcoming year, I’m going to keep things as is, in the hopes that I can reverse this downward trend. I am leaving my goal for steps per day at 7500, which would again bring me to a yearly total of 2,730,000 steps. Hopefully the second attempt is the one that sticks.

Fitbit V: Week 44

Thanksgiving week was, quite possibly, my worst week in 4+ years.  Things got off to a poor start on Sunday, where I came 1 step shy of 4500 steps, thanks to schlepping up Christmas decorations from the basement.  Monday finished just over 3500 steps, despite a trip into the city for dinner.  Tuesday was back up around 4400 steps.  Wednesday finished 1 step shy of 4000 steps.  Thanksgiving itself came in with a sad total of 2350 steps.  Friday bounced back a little bit, jumping all the way up to 3200 steps.  Saturday was the low point of the week, coming 1 step shy of 1700.
