52 Books in 52 Weeks – 2017 Edition

bookshelfA new year is once again upon us, and it is time to start year eight of the goal to read a book a week for the entire year, totaling 52 books in 52 weeks.  In year one, I only made it to 8 books.  Year two doubled that total.  Year three used graphic novels to improve once again, finishing with 24.  Year four was the first where I dropped from the year before, only finishing 18 books, which was well short of the ultimate goal.  Three years ago, I bounced back to finish with 23 books.  Two years ago, I had my best year since starting this challenge, not to mention my best reading year ever, finishing with 31 books.  Last year, I matched that high point in total books, though far surpassing it in total pages read thanks to reading the entire Harry Potter series.

I’m going to give it another go this year.  I’ve got a few new books loaded in the Kindle app on my iPad, plus a few new purchases from Amazon, not to mention birthday and Christmas presents, so I’ve got a good pile to start with.  As a reminder, the rules I am using are:

  • You can count a book as read as long as you have completed the book in 2017 and at least 50% of that reading takes place in 2017
  • Any book counts as long as you’re not embarrassed to count it.
  • Poetry collections do indeed count.
  • Re-reading a book is okay as long as it isn’t done this year. (Reading Twilight twice in 2010 only counts as 1 read)
  • Audiobooks also count.

My first book of the year looks like it will be A Bloody Storm, the third part of Richard Castle’s Derrick Storm novellas.  All told, 2017 should be another good year.

Book 30 (of 52) – Harry Potter And The Deathly Hallows

Harry Potter And The Deathly Hallows – J.K. Rowling

11 months ago, I started on this journey into the world of Harry Potter rather reluctantly.   Now, having finished the seventh and final book in the series, I’m going to say it was a worthwhile ordeal.  In this last entry, Harry, Ron, and Hermoine have left Hogwarts and are tracking down the remaining Horcruxes in an effort to defeat Voldemort once and for all.

Rowling definitely ups the action this time out, and characters we’ve come to know and love do not survive the final battle.  The stakes are real, as they should be after 7 trips to the same universe.  All in all, it was well worth the effort to cram all 7 books in to one year.

Book 26 (of 52) – Harry Potter And The Half-Blood Prince

Harry Potter And The Half-Blood Prince - J.K. Rowling

Harry Potter And The Half-Blood Prince – J.K. Rowling

After a 3 month break (thanks mostly to Angelina not giving me the next book), I returned to the Wizarding World of Harry Potter with Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, the sixth and penultimate entry in the series.  In this installment, Harry finds an old potions book with shortcuts and spells added by the so-called Half Blood Prince.  Meanwhile, Dumbledore tries to track down bits of Voldemort’s soul before falling to the Death Eaters.

The series takes a darker turn here, as Harry and his classmates come closer to adulthood and learn they will need to face the coming battles without their headmaster.  There is one more book in the series, which I hope to finish by the end of the year.  Assuming, of course, that Angelina cooperates.

Book 17 (of 52) – Harry Potter And The Order Of The Phoenix

Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix - J.K. Rowling

Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix – J.K. Rowling

The fifth installment of the Harry Potter series sees our intrepid heroes fighting against a wizarding world that does not believe them that Voldemort has returned.  As the Ministry of Magic attempts to take over Hogwarts and control the actions of Harry and crew, the young wizards look to do battle against the Death Eaters while preparing for their testing.

In a twist of fate that had more to do with things going on in my world as I read this, I found myself relating to Harry’s feelings of disillusion as the things that brought him joy at Hogwarts are taken away from him by Dolores Umbridge.  This was, I’m lead to believe, the longest book of the series and seems to be setting up the end game as the forces of good prepare to do their final battle against the forces of evil.

Vacation Recap – Universal Studios

UniversalAfter a whole 9 weeks since my last trip to Florida, I woke up early on the morning of June 1 for a 6 AM flight to Orlando with the family.  After landing, we caught the shuttle to the Hard Rock Hotel, where we had a long wait for the rooms to be ready.  After a quick lunch and a round of mini golf at the Citiwalk, Dennis, Angelina, Danny, and I went to Islands of Adventure for a quick re-introduction to Harry Potter land and the Jurassic Park ride.  We then headed back to the hotel, finally got in to our rooms, had dinner with appearances from a minion and Scooby Doo, and then called it an early night due to the early flight.

Thursday morning we got an early start and started at Universal, where we had a breakfast date at the Leaky Cauldron in the new Harry Potter area.  After breakfast, we headed to Olivanders to pick up wands for the boys, then went through the line for the Gringotts ride, before my mom and I begged off before the ride began.  It was at this point I got a text message from Jeff asking me to get him a wand.  As you may recall, I was at this very spot with Jeff less than 2 months ago and he could have purchased his own wand, but he was being a bit of a baby.  So, I went and bought him a wand, putting more thought in to it than I probably should have.  Once everyone was done at Gringotts, we hopped on the Hogwarts Express for the ride to Islands of Adventure.  Later, we wound up back at Universal, where Danny had an encounter with the shrunken head on the Knight Bus.

Friday was back to Universal for a character breakfast at Cafe LaBamba, followed by a return trip to Harry Potter land. After a quick trip back over to Islands of Adventure, we headed back to the hotel for some fun in the pool.

Book 14 (of 52) – Harry Potter And The Goblet Of Fire

Harry Potter And The Goblet Of Fire - J.K. Rowling

Harry Potter And The Goblet Of Fire – J.K. Rowling

The fourth installment of the Harry Potter series sees our heroes return to Hogwarts for their fourth year of schooling, with the wizarding world aflutter with the return of the Tri-Wizard Tournament, held for the first time in hundreds of years.  When Harry finds himself chosen as school champion, despite not having entered, he must figure out who is trying to kill him, while surviving the three challenges of the tournament.

The stakes kick up a bit in this entry, as the villain of the series, Lord Voldemort, makes his first real appearance.  I did manage to read most of this book either on the way to or at Universal Studios, home of the Wizarding World of Harry Potter theme park.  That certainly boosted my enjoyment somewhat.  Now that I’m more than half way through this reading experiment, I’m glad the end is in sight.

Vacation Recap – Florida Roadtrip Part 4

When we left off last time, day one at the theme parks had gone horribly awry.

Wednesday

After another late night, I was the only one who got up early on Wednesday.  I decided to throw caution to the wind and check out the imposition that was the free breakfast, where I ran into Tom and Meredith, along with their respective families.  After breakfast, it was back to the room and preparations for a day at Universal Studios for exciting Harry Potter action.

disney-to-universalJeff, Val, and I headed out to the car for the under-12 mile drive to Universal.  As you can probably guess, we never made it.  We were less than 3 miles away when we were forced to stop at a 7-11, where we stayed for the next 2 hours.  Eventually, we decided to call an audible and drove across the street to the Whole Foods, where Val stocked up on some homeopathic remedies in the hopes they would calm her down.  From there, it was back to the hotel, where we left Val in the room and Jeff and I went back to the ESPN Club for lunch.

Seeing as we spent a combined $900 for the Universal tickets, Val convinced Jeff to go back without her, so the two of us again ventured out to see all the wonders of Harry Potter and his ilk.

UniversalWe arrived late in the afternoon, around 4:00, and made our way inside.  We started at Islands of Adventure, heading straight back to Hogsmeade, the original piece of Harry Potter land.  We took a quick look around and then jumped on the Hogwarts Express, which travels between the two parks.  After the train pulled in to the other park, we looked around there quickly, spending most of our time waiting for the dragon atop the Gringotts Bank to spit fire.  With that done, it was time to bid farewell to Universal.  That $900 provided nearly 2 hours worth of entertainment.  3 if you include the drive there and back.

When we got back to the hotel, Val was asleep, so, rather than join Tom and Meredith down at the final planned event of the week and enjoying free food and drinks, Jeff and I returned to the hotel bar.  Eventually, as the night wore on, we were joined by others for another night of drinking and what passes for debauchery at Disney World.  The night ended back in the hotel room when a drunken Jeff fought against gravity and lost, falling over between the air mattress and our luggage.

Thursday

Our initial plans for the final day at Disney were to go to the Magic Kingdom before heading out on another road trip up the coast.  As with all of our other plans for the trip, they fell apart and were quickly changed.  I again partook in the free breakfast and nearly got Jeff to join me, but he was unwilling to use his conference badge to gain entrance to the breakfast.  After breakfast, it was decided that Jeff would drive back solo and Val and I would fly home that afternoon.  We booked a surprisingly affordable last-minute flight and then the three of us went back to Hollywood Studios for a shopping excursion.

Following a final meal at the ESPN Club, we loaded up the truck and headed to the airport.  Jeff dropped Val and I off and then headed off, taking our luggage, and, unfortunately, our coats, with him.  Val and I went in, checked in for the flight, and everything was good to go, until we found out that, to get to our gate, there would be a short tram ride.  She took it like a champ, and we settled in at the gate, waiting for the hopefully uneventful flight home.

As luck would have it, our flight was delayed waiting for the plane to arrive.  Once we got on the plane, we were delayed again on the tarmac as the first storms of the week arrived.  This did not go over well with Val, who broke the seatbelt light edict multiple times to run to the bathroom.  Before takeoff, Val endeared herself to the lady sitting on the other side of her by asking for her vomit bag, just in case.  Once we got in the air, there were no incidents, but I could tell that she was uncomfortable the whole time.

When we landed, she darted off the plane and we headed out into the cold, snowy night without our coats.  We hugged goodbye and went our separate ways, finding our rides home and ending this exciting and eventful trip.

Book 12 (of 52) – Harry Potter And The Prisoner Of Azkaban

Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban - J.K. Rowling

Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban – J.K. Rowling

The third installment of the Harry Potter series sees our heroes return to Hogwarts for their third year of schooling, with the wizarding world on high alert after Sirius Black, thought to have betrayed Harry’s parents to Voldemort, escaped from the wizard prison of Azkaban.  For the third year in a row, the trio of Harry, Ron, and Hermione find themselves as they only ones who can solve the mystery surrounding them, with the help of Dumbledore.

The Harry Potter reading experiment continues and I must admit, I do find myself more immersed in it than I thought I would be.  I’ve got 4 books left and just more than a month before returning to Universal Studios and the Wizarding World of Harry Potter, not to mention the efforts to get Jeff and Val to stop smoking.

Book 10 (of 52) – Harry Potter And The Chamber Of Secrets

Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets - J.K. Rowling

Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets – J.K. Rowling

The second installment of the Harry Potter series sees Harry, Ron, and Hermione return to Hogwarts for their second year of wizard school.  Once again, the trio stumble upon an evil plot at the school that only they can deal with.

As I explained last time, I’m not exactly reading these books because I want to, but out of a sense of obligation.  That said, I did find myself enjoying this one more than the first.  Whether that was just out of familiarity with the characters or actual enjoyment, I haven’t figured out yet.  Anyway, on to the next one!

FB2: Week 8

FB2_Week8My best week since going to Toronto last September, accounting for 3 of my top 16 step days to date.  Things got off to a slow start on Sunday, as we left Virginia and traveled south to Orangeburg, South Carolina.  Monday finished above my 6000 step goal thanks to the Reach For The Stars gala after we finished the drive from South Carolina to Orlando.  Tuesday was the big day of the week, as I broke 20,000 steps for the first time with the Fitbit and notched my second highest total of all time, thanks to a trip to Hollywood Studios followed by a walk around Epcot.  Wednesday was supposed to be Universal day to see Harry Potter, but poor Val couldn’t make it, leaving Jeff and I to make short work of the park, leaving me with just over 14,000 steps.  A complete change of plans on Thursday led us back to Hollywood Studios for some shopping and then a trip to the airport to fly home.  Back home, Friday was much more back to usual, finishing just over 6500 steps.  Saturday was a bit of a bust, as I fell back down under 5000 steps.
