#359 – Mike Porzio

Name: Mike Porzio

Rank: 359

Position: P

Years With White Sox: 2002-2003

Mike Porzio joined the White Sox organization prior to the 2001 season, and was called up to the big leagues in 2002.  Working out of the bullpen, he was moderately successful, if you count an ERA near 5 as successful.  The following year, he closed out his major league career with three starts, with an ERA over 6.  Following the season, he was granted free agency, and he subsequently bounced around the minor leagues.

Porzio’s numbers in a White Sox uniform were:

#360 – Randy Martz

Name: Randy Martz

Rank: 360

Position: P

Year With White Sox: 1983

Randy Martz, the first round pick for the Chicago Cubs in the 1977 draft, joined the White Sox in a January 1983 trade that sent Steve Trout and Warren Brusstar to the north side and brought Scott Fletcher and Pat Tabler to the south side.

Martz appeared in one game for the eventual division winners, getting a no decision in his August 5th start.  Thus ended the major league career of Randy Martz, and he was released during spring training in 1984.

#361 – Randy Williams

Name: Randy Williams

Rank: 361

Position: P

Years With White Sox: 2009-2010

Randy Williams made his major league debut in 2004 with the Mariners and, after splitting 2005 between Colorado and San Diego, he disappeared from the big leagues until he resurfaced with the White Sox in 2009.  He did a decent enough job that, combined with 11.1 scoreless innings in spring training, the White Sox brought him back in 2010.

The results of that decision were not pretty, as Williams posted a 5.40 ERA and a 2.320 WHIP in 27 appearances.  Following the season, he was not offered a contract and went on to become a headache for someone else.

#362 – Ray Searage

Name: Ray Searage

Rank: 362

Position: P

Years With White Sox: 1986-1987

Ray Searage was acquired by the White Sox in a deadline deal with the Brewers for Al Jones and a minor leaguer.  He was tremendous for the Sox, appearing in 29 games and finishing with a 0.62 ERA.

His 1987 season, while respectable, was a bit of a letdown after that debut.  He finished the year with a 4.20 ERA.  He was released during a veteran purge by GM Larry Himes towards the end of spring training in 1988, along with Jim Winn and Jerry Hairston.

Today, Searage has returned to the major leagues as the pitching coach for the resurgent Pittsburgh Pirates.

#363 – Rick White

Name: Rick White

Rank: 363

Position: P

Year With White Sox: 2003

Rick White spent parts of 12 seasons in the major leagues employed by 11 different organizations.  That, my friends, is the mark of someone who does not pitch well enough to keep a job but has good enough stuff to keep getting chances.  His chance with the White Sox came in 2003.

White was granted free agency after spending the last month and a half of the 2002 season with the Cardinals, and he signed with the White Sox in late January of 2003.  Things do not go well for White on the south side, as he finished his tenure with a 6.61 ERA.

White was released in August following statements he made that were critical of Jerry Manuel’s handling of the pitching staff.

White’s numbers in a White Sox uniform, both for games I attended and overall, were:

#364 – Robert Machado

Name: Robert Machado

Rank: 364

Position: C

Years With White Sox: 1996-1998

Robert Machado made his major league debut for the 1996 White Sox and spent parts of 3 seasons with the big league club.  Machado opened the 1999 campaign with the Sox Triple A affiliate in Charlotte before being given his unconditional release in mid-May.

Congratulations Adam Dunn

Adam Dunn put his name in the record book last night, becoming only the 6th player in baseball history to strikeout 2000 times in his career.  At his current rate, Dunn should surpass Reggie Jackson as the all-time leader in less than 3 seasons.

Dunn also has a chance to break the single season record for strikeouts.  His season thus far is already the 12th highest total in history.  He needs 32 strikeouts to tie Mark Reynolds total from 2009, and has 28 remaining games in which to get them.  At his current rate of nearly 1.5 strikeouts per game, he should have no issues if he stays healthy and the White Sox remain in contention.

#365 – Rod Bolton

Name: Rod Bolton

Rank: 365

Position: P

Years With White Sox: 1993, 1995

Rod Bolton was selected by the White Sox in the 13th round of the 1990 draft and made his major league debut a mere 3 years later.  That’s about where the good news ends, as Bolton was horrible and quickly sent back to the minor leagues.

He resurfaced in 1995 and was ever worse.  After the season, he was mercifully sold to the Fukuoka Daiei Hawks of the Japanese league, signaling the end of his major league career.

Bolton’s numbers in a White Sox uniform were:

60 Million Dollar Man

The long-awaited contract extension for Starlin Castro will keep the young shortstop on the north side through the 2019 season, with a $16 million option for 2020.  The Cubs hope that they will get a deal by buying out Castro’s arbitration and first few free agent years.  They must also hope that a player who has had attention lapses in the past will not rest on his now very expensive laurels.

The Cubs have spent a lot of money the last few years to shed the long term contracts that helped bring them back-to-back division championships.  They still have been unable to move Alfonso Soriano’s albatross of a contract.  You can only hope that Castro continues to improve and does not become the latest in a string of disappointing long term deals.

#366 – Rod Craig

Name: Rod Craig

Rank: 366

Position: OF

Year With White Sox: 1986

After spending time with the Mariners and the Indians in the late 70s and early 80s, Rod Craig resurfaced for 10 games with the 1986 White Sox, getting 2 hits in 10 at bats.  He was granted free agency following the season and that was it for his career.

Craig’s numbers in a White Sox uniform were:
