#343 – Jeff Gray

Name: Jeff Gray

Rank: 343

Position: P

Year With White Sox: 2011

Jeff Gray had a short stint on the South Side, signing as a free agent after finishing the 2010 season on the North Side with the Cubs.  He was surprisingly effective during the month of April in 6 appearances, and was claimed by the Mariners when he was placed on waivers following the return of Jake Peavy.

#344 – Jeff Marquez

Name: Jeff Marquez

Rank: 344

Position: P

Year With White Sox: 2010

Jeff Marquez was acquired by the White Sox after the 2008 season along with Wilson Betemit and Jhonny Nunez in the deal the sent Nick Swisher packing to the Yankees.  He made his major league debut on July 9, 2010 against the Royals, giving up 2 runs in 1 inning of work.  After that game, he was quickly returned to the minor leagues, and thus ended his White Sox career.  In June of 2011, he was claimed off of waivers by the Yankees.

Name: Jeff Schaefer

Rank: 345

Position: IF

Year With White Sox: 1989

Jeff Schaefer made his major league debut on April 7, 1989 against the A’s.  He appeared in 14 games after that before his White Sox career came to an end.  Ironically, his 2 career home runs came against the White Sox at the new Comiskey Park, the first against Greg Hibbard in 1991 and the second the following year against Kirk McCaskill.

After leaving the White Sox, Schaefer made an appearance as “Pirate on Second Base” in Major League II.

#346 – Jeff Shaw

Name: Jeff Shaw

Rank: 346

Position: P

Year With White Sox: 1995

Jeff Shaw had a distinguished, 12 year major league career covering 633 appearances, 9 of which were as a member of the White Sox.  In late August of 1995, the White Sox and the Expos swapped pitchers, with Jose DeLeon heading north of the border and Jeff Shaw coming back to Chicago.  Shaw gave up 7 runs in 9 2/3 innings over his 9 September appearances, and, following the season, he was granted free agency, ultimately signing with the Reds.

Another One Bites The Dust

For the second time in less than 4 months, the Twitterverse has exploded with confirmed reports of a confirmed trade involving the Cubs, only to have it fall apart within hours of being confirmed.  The first, back at the trade deadline at the end of July, involved Ryan Dempster being sent to the Braves for one of their top pitching prospects.  Word broke on Twitter after someone in the Braves front office leaked the news, but before Dempster had been told of the trade.  He got angry and ultimately witheld his approval despite previously agreeing to waive his no-trade rights if a deal was made to the Braves.

The second occurence went down Friday night, when Twitter exploded with reports that Carlos Marmol was being traded to the Angels for Dan Haren.  This time, the source was Marmol himself, who had waived his no-trade rights and was giving interviews in his native Dominican Republic about the trade.  The only problem was that the trade was not completed and was eventually scrapped, with the Angels ending up not picking up Haren’s option, making him a free agent and leaving Marmol as a member of the Cubs.

In both cases, the Cubs were not to blame for the trade details leaking before the deal was complete, but they did still come out of both situations with a little egg on their face.  They eventually ended up trading Dempster to the Rangers, but got a worse return than what they were going to get from the Braves.  Time will tell if they will eventually end up moving Marmol this winter and if they can get anything close to Haren.

#347 – Joel McKeon

Name: Joel McKeon

Rank: 347

Position: P

Years With White Sox: 1986-1987

Joel McKeon was the White Sox first round pick in the 1982 draft and made his debut in 1986, where he appeared in 30 games out of the bullpen and had a rather successful 2.45 ERA.  His 1987 season, however, was much less successful, with his ERA jumping to 9.43.  The following February, McKeon was shipped off to the Padres to complete an earlier trade for Ed Wojna, but he had already made his last major league appearance.

While McKeon did little to make himself memorable on a real baseball diamond, his 1986 appearance with Buffalo, the then Triple A affiliate of the White Sox, made him a superstar of our Micro League Baseball league, where he was a stalwart of the team belonging to my friend Dave.

#348 – Jose Segura

Name: Jose Segura

Rank: 348

Position: P

Years With White Sox: 1988-1989

Jose Segura made 11 not-so-successful appearances for the White Sox over his two seasons with the team.  After finishing the 1988 season with an elevated 13.50 ERA, Segura was released in November.  One month later, however, his services were deemed vital to the success of the 1989 squad, for which he managed to increase his ERA to 15.00.  After spending the entire 1990 season with Triple A Vancouver, for whom he posted an impressive (for him) 5.10 ERA, he was released for good.

#349 – Josh Kinney

Name: Josh Kinney

Rank: 349

Position: P

Year With White Sox: 2011

After bouncing around the Cardinals organization, Josh Kinney made his triumphant return to the major leagues in August of 2011 after being recalled to the White Sox to take the place of Phil Humber, who had been struck in the head by a line drive.  Kinney’s American League debut, giving up one hit in a three inning relief stint against the eventual AL champion Rangers, unfortunately did not lead to long term success, as he faded down the stretch, much like the rest of the White Sox.  Following the season, he was allowed to pursue other opportunities, and he hooked up with the Mariners for 2012.

Years With White Sox: 2003-2004

Josh Stewart was a 5th round draft choice of the White Sox in 1999 and made his major league debut on April 6, 2003 against the Tigers.  He compiled 8 appearances over his two seasons with the White Sox and was ultimately released in June of 2005, never making it back to the major leagues.

#351 – Kelly Paris

Name: Kelly Paris

Rank: 351

Position: 3B

Year With White Sox: 1988

Kelly Paris was originally acquired by the White Sox following the 1983 season when he was purchased from the Reds.  However, he was then released during spring training.  He was resigned following the 1987 season and made it into 14 games with the big league club, the last of his major league career, before shattering his elbow in a collision with Detroit’s Tom Brookens.

There was one surprising quirk to Paris’ time in Chicago.  Prior to 1988, Paris had 168 career at bats and totaled 0 home runs and 8 RBI.  In 44 at bats with the White Sox before his injury in 1988, Paris blasted 3 home runs and drove in 6 runs.

Paris’s numbers in a White Sox uniform were:
