Top 200 Albums: #141 – 150

itunes_imageWe last counted down the Top 200 albums in my iTunes library four years ago. Since that time, the world has literally changed, and my commute has decreased from 1+ hours each way to 25 steps. So, despite the decrease in potential listening time, I figured it was time to take another look, based on number of plays from late 2007 through the morning of January 1, 2022.

We begin the second quarter of our chart with the next batch of ten albums that I have listened to the most over the last 15 years, including two compilations, two albums from bands I’ve seen live in concert, and one movie soundtrack.

#150: Various Artists – Billboard Top Hits 1988
iTunes stats: 83 plays
Previous Ranking: 190

Five tracks from this compilation of the biggest hits of 1988, from artists like Billy Ocean, The Escape Club, and Bobby McFerrin, amongst others, nearly doubled its plays over the past four years to rise 40 slots on the chart.

#149: Guns N’ Roses – Use Your Illusion I
iTunes stats: 84 plays
Previous Ranking: 151

The third studio album from the band, released the same day as its companion album Use Your Illusion II and which I bought during finals week after my first semester in college, increased its listens by nearly 65%.

#148: Various Artists – Austin Powers
iTunes stats: 86 plays
Previous Ranking: 117

The soundtrack to the original Austin Powers film, released in 1997 and featuring the work of artists like Strawberry Alarm Clock and Divinyls, uses four songs to increase its plays by 23.

#147: Nirvana – In Utero
iTunes stats: 87 plays
Previous Ranking: 125

The final studio album from Nirvana, released in 1993 just six months before Kurt Cobain’s death, added 27 new listens to the four tracks out of twelve that I’ve listened to.

#145: The Beatles – With The Beatles
iTunes stats: 88 plays
Previous Ranking: 147

This 1963 album, like all of the Beatles studio albums, would be much higher, but I lost all of the old counts for their albums when I upgraded to the remastered versions in 2009.

2021: The Year In Travel

In normal times, this is where I would take a look back at all of the trips I took over the past year and look ahead to what, if any. travel plans I already have for 2022.  Unfortunately, 2021 continued to be far from normal times, as the global pandemic raged on for a second year, though things did manage to open back up slightly.

My first “trip” of the year, if you can call it that, was in March.  On a Friday afternoon, I drove down to Purdue to pick up Danny, before continuing on to Indianapolis so we could watch Purdue in the NCAA tournament.  They managed to completely crap the bed, which made the whole effort worthwhile.  After the game, we traveled back the way we came and I was home early the next morning.

In August, I made my only big trip of the year, driving down to Florida for some fun in the sun.  I had rented a condo on AirBNB that was right on the water, which, thanks to the spacious deck, let me enjoy the view while relaxing and reading.  I also managed to make my first two trips to Tropicana Field, as the White Sox were in town to battle the Rays.  Those experiences did not turn out quite as well.

On the drive home, I stopped in Atlanta and managed to take in a game at Truist Park to see the Yankees battle the Braves.  The following day I completed my journey, making it home in the midst of a torrential downpour, which made the last hour or so of driving so much fun.

The only other trips were back down to Purdue for football games, one in October and two in November.  We didn’t manage to make the second game in November, but it’s the drive that matters.

Looking ahead to 2022, despite the rise in COVID cases due to the omicron variant, I’m planning to return to Hawaii later this month and the family is headed to Boston in May for Angelina’s graduation.  Other than that, there are some baseball trips I want to take this year, but nothing is solid just yet.  Here’s hoping that the world returns to some sort of normalcy, though I’m not optimistic.

Fitbit VII – Week 47

Yet another disappointing week, though at least I had a mysterious injury to blame for some of it.  Sunday was easily the best day of the week, as I drove down to Purdue to see the women’s basketball game with Danny in the band, finishing the day with 5800 steps.  Monday saw a significant decline, falling down to 3000 steps, as I began to feel a pain in my side.  Tuesday was slightly better, rising all the way up to 3600 steps.  Wednesday is when the pain was at its worst, so I spent most of the day in bed, which left me with just over 2000 steps.  I was starting to improve on Thursday and managed to get back up over 4200 steps.  Friday fell back down again to 3100 steps.  Saturday saw an improvement, rising back up to 4300 steps.

2021 Final Standings

The 2021 college football season, at least the regular season, has come to an end, after Purdue beat the dreaded Hoosiers last weekend to notch their first 8 win season since 2006.  After going 5 seasons without a football game, I attended 3 (almost 4) games this year, my highest total of all time.  I also managed to travel to two different venues, bringing my lifetime total up to 5.

2021 Team Records
TeamName Won Loss Winning Pctg
Purdue Boilermakers 3 0 1.000
Northwestern Wildcats 0 1 0.000
Michigan State Spartans 0 1 0.000
Illinois Fighting Illini 0 1 0.000

We’re #1

For the first time in the history of man kind, the #1 ranked men’s college basketball team in the country calls Mackey Arena home.  The 8-0 Boilermakers were a unanimous No. 1 in the poll released earlier today, moving up #2 last week following victories over Florida State and Iowa and a Duke loss to Ohio State.  Prior to this week, Purdue had the second-most appearances in the AP poll, 379 weeks, for a school that had never been ranked #1, behind  Maryland with 434 weeks.  Purdue goes on the road this week with a Big 10 game at Rutgers on Thursday and the Basketball Hall of Fame Invitational against North Carolina State on Sunday in Brooklyn.

Fitbit VII – Week 44

Yet another disappointing week, which should have been boosted at the end by yet another football game, but was not.  Things got off to a poor start on Sunday, as I finished with 3500 steps.  Monday was slightly worse, as I dropped down to 3400 steps.  Tuesday saw a big increase, jumping all the way up to 4300 steps.  Wednesday fell back down again a bit, down to 4100 steps.  Thanksgiving festivities saw Thursday, fall back down 3200 steps.  Friday was the high point of the week, thanks to a trip back down to Purdue to bring Danny back to campus and to watch his band practice, earning me 5300 steps.  A rainy morning on Saturday meant skipping the football game and driving home, leaving me 20 steps shy of 4700.

Fitbit VII – Week 43

Another disappointing week, boosted at the end by yet another football game.  Things got off to a poor start on Sunday, as I finished with 3800 steps.  Monday was slightly better, as I jumped up to exactly 4200 steps.  Tuesday saw a big drop off, coming 23 steps away from 2800.  Wednesday saw a big improvement, jumping up to 4800 steps.  Despite a trip out to see some work friends for lunch on Thursday, it fell back down again to nearly 2900 steps.  Friday rose back up to 4400 steps, thanks to a day off.  A trip to Wrigley Field to see Purdue battle Northwestern on Saturday was my high point of the week, leaving me 23 steps shy of 6700.

Fitbit VII – Week 41

Another disappointing week, helped along by trip to a football game.  Things got off to a bad start on Sunday, as I finished with 3100 steps.  Monday was slightly better, as I jumped up to 4100 steps.  Tuesday fell off quite a bit, coming just 18 steps away from 2600.  Wednesday, as usual, was the worst day of the week, as I failed to even get to 2000 steps, ending with 1900.  Thursday saw a bounce back, finishing 3 steps short of 3700 thanks in part to a team lunch that sent me out in to the world.  Friday was even better, thanks to a day off, finishing only 7 steps shy of 4600.  Saturday was the big day of the week, as a trip down to West Lafayette to see Danny and Purdue upset Michigan State put me over 10,600 steps.
