Prolific Authors – Three Books

It is time once again to take a look at the authors I have read the most, dating back to high school.  This year, I’m once again on pace to set a new record for books read in a year, so I thought it would be nice to take a deeper dive into those books I’ve read through August of this year. Since our last check-in, I’ve read an additional 114 books, so there should be some movement over the past two years.  Without further ado, it’s time to take another look and see if my “favorite” authors have changed much over the years.  We continue today with the 21 authors I’ve read three times, one more than two years ago.

Kevin J. Anderson

Last read in the 20th century, he’s responsible for three of the X-Files books on my shelf.

Fredrik Backman

This Swedish author has become a recent favorite, showing up once a year prior to last year, with more to come, I’m sure.

The 22 Murders of Madison May – Max Barry

Max Barry

After a 17-year break, Barry returned to my attention in 2024 with The 22 Murders of Madison May.

Adam Carolla

The former comedian and current right-wing nutjob managed to get me to read three of his podcast regurgitations before being driven away.

Bill Carter

The former media reporter for the New York Times delivered three behind the scenes looks at the television industry, including the transition from Johnny Carson to Jay Leno and from Jay Leno to Conan O’Brien and back again.

Supreme Justice – Max Allan Collins

Prolific Authors – Two Books

Laura Caldwell

I have no idea how I came across the work of this local author, but I must have enjoyed it enough to go back for seconds.  Unfortunately, she passed away in 2020, leaving behind a back catalog of fourteen novels and two non-fiction books.

Michael Chabon

Winner of the 2001 Pulitzer Prize for Fiction for The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier & Clay, the most recent of the two works of his I’ve read.  I have another, Wonder Boys, waiting in the to read pile, so he rise up some day.

Matthew V. Clemens

The co-author, with Max Allan Collins, of the final two chapters of the Reeder and Rogers trilogy.

Ready Player Two – Ernest Cline

Ernest Cline

The man responsible for both Ready Player One and Ready Player Two.

Bill Clinton

The former president has co-written two novels with James Patterson.

Michael Connelly

The creator of Harry Bosch makes his first appearance thanks to his Renée Ballard spin-off series.

Laura Dave

I read my second novel from her, The Night We Lost Him, earlier this year.

Felicia Day

The first author here that I’ve happened to meet in person.

Cameron Dokey

She makes the list based on two entries in the Buffy the Vampire Slayer series.

Way back in December of 2011 (and again every other December since), we’ve taken a look at the authors I have read the most, dating back to high school.  Since I’ve far surpassed my “normal” reading output the last three yeas, I thought it would be nice to once again take a deeper dive into those books I’ve read through the start of October. Since our last check-in, I’ve read an additional 118 books, so there could be some movement over the past two years, but it’s time to take another look and see if my “favorite” authors have changed much in that time span.  We continue today with the 20 authors I’ve read thrice, an increase of eight over the past two years.

Prolific Authors 2019

Way back in December of 2011 (and again in the Decembers of 2013, 2015, and 2017), we took a look at the authors I have read the most, dating back to high school. Since our last check-in, I’ve read an additional 48 books from 50 different authors. There shouldn’t be much movement over the past 2 years, but it’s time to take another look and see if my “favorite” authors have changed much in that time span. Once again, we will be limiting ourselves to the now 70 authors from whom I have read more than one book.

Book 7 (of 52) – Not Taco Bell Material

Not Taco Bell Material – Adam Carolla

If you’re a fan of Adam Carolla’s long-running podcast, reading any of his books gives you a feeling of deja vu.  And that’s because these are all stories that you’ve heard dozens of times before.  Not Taco Bell Material was Carolla’s second effort, but the third book of his that I’ve read.  There’s really nothing here that is new, as the Aceman is nothing if not a recycler of material.  I got a few chuckles while reading the book, but, for the most part, it was a rehash of things I’ve already grown bored with.

Prolific Authors 2017

Since our last check-in, I’ve read an additional 60 books from 47 different authors. There shouldn’t be much movement over the past 2 years, but it’s time to take another look and see if my “favorite” authors have changed much in that time span. Once again, we will be limiting ourselves to the now 54 authors from whom I have read more than one book.

An Evening With Anna Kendrick

annakLast night, I headed out to Naperville to pick up a signed book and a Q&A with Anna Kendrick for her new tome, Scrappy Little Nobody.  Greta Johnsen, co-host of the WBEZ’s Nerdette Podcast, was on hand to moderate the evening’s festivities, in which Kendrick charmed the audience with tales from the book and how to strive for success after “making it”.  The two went back and forth for about an hour, with Kendrick apologizing to Jesus for cursing in the church where the event took place.

This was my second experience with a signing run through Anderson’s Bookshop, and the first since Adam Carolla came to town in 2014.  Other than paying full retail for the book and a small screw up in ordering tickets which led to me buying the last ticket and attending alone, everything ran smoothly and was worth the effort of heading out to the western suburbs after work.  I’ll continue to keep an eye out to see if they have anyone else interesting coming through town.

Autographed Books – President Me

presmeWe continue our look at the hardcover books I’ve gotten autographed over the years with President Me by Adam Carolla.  This collection of rants from the Adam Carolla Show podcast goes over the things the Aceman would change were he to become President of these United States.

During the book tour, Adam did a Q&A and book signing in Naperville in conjunction with Anderson’s Bookshop.  Purchasing the book from them got me a spot in the autograph line for a quick meet and greet and photo, along with the autographed book.

Daddy, Stop Talking! & Other Things My Kids Want But Won’t Be Getting – Adam Carolla

The latest output from Adam Carolla, ostensibly a parenting book with advice given to his children, made its way onto my Kindle app recently thanks to a sale at Amazon.  Daddy, Stop Talking! is, once again, basically a transcript of rants from Carolla’s daily podcast transcribed for people who apparently need to read what they have already heard.  It was the same issue that I had with his previous book back in 2014, the lack of new content.

But, as I said 2 years ago, if the price of daily entertainment in the form of a free daily podcast is occasionally buying a book, especially when it comes in under $3, then it is a small price to pay.  If his first two books ever show up on special, I’ll probably splurge on them as well.  And have the same complaints.
