Post Mortem – 2 Broke Girls

I must admit, I was surprised when CBS announced that they were not renewing 2 Broke Girls for a seventh season.  Not because the show was necessarily good, which it wasn’t, but because it seemed to still be garnering enough ratings, despite being plugged in to whatever hold CBS happened to have in their lineup.

As I’ve said probably each fall, the disappointment in what this show did with the talent involved was immense.  Both Beth Behrs and Kat Dennings deserved better than the lowest common denominator crap they were forced to shill out each week.  In that regard, I hope they both move on to bigger and better things, where their talents can continue to shine.

CBS Upfronts

With very few holes to fill in their lineup, CBS presents easily the least changed lineup for the fall.  With the network again airing football on Thursday nights for the first 2 months of the season, there will be much juggling going on, starting on Monday, where The Big Bang Theory returns until football ends.  It will be followed by 9JKL, a new show starring Mark Feuerstein, Linda Lavin, and Elliott Gould.  New comedy Me, Myself & I, with Bobby Moynihan about the defining moments in one man’s life over three distinct periods, is sandwiched between the returning Kevin Can Wait and Scorpion.  Once football ends, Kevin moves up to lead off the night and Superior Donuts moves in.

Tuesday stays exactly the same.  Wednesday night sees Criminal Minds move back an hour for its 13th season, with its old time slot given to Seal Team, starring David Boreanaz in a military drama that follows the professional and personal lives of the most elite unit of Navy SEALs.  Thursday, starting in November, starts with The Big Bang Theory, followed by the spin-off Young Sheldon, about, well, a young Sheldon Cooper.  The night finishes with S.W.A.T., a new drama based on the old series and film remake starring former Criminal Minds star Shemar Moore.

Friday stays exactly the same.  Sunday adds Wisdom of the Crowd, starring Jeremy Piven as a visionary tech innovator who creates a cutting-edge crowdsourcing app to solve his daughter’s murder, and revolutionizes crime solving in the process, which will in no way be the similar to last year’s APB, which bombed on FOX.

On tap for midseason, along side returning favorite Elementary, are Instinct, which stars Alan Cumming as a former CIA operative who is lured back to his old life when the NYPD needs his help to stop a serial killer, and By The Book, a comedy about a modern day man at a crossroads in his life who decides to live strictly in accordance with the Bible.

Gone and never to be seen again are The Great Indoors, 2 Broke Girls, The Odd Couple, Pure Genius, Criminal Minds: Beyond Borders, Doubt, Training Day, and Ransom.

Midseason Review – Mondays

old-tv-set1Day 2 of our look back at my thoughts on the new fall television season and what is new for the winter and spring..

7:00

The Big Bang Theory – Once again, The Big Bang Theory moves back to Mondays until late October to accommodate the NFL.  The show continues to be a ratings powerhouse, so I assume the move won’t shake things up too much.

I’ll save my comments for Thursday.

Supergirl – Despite a successful first season, CBS jettisoned the show and now the second season will air on The CW.

Moving to The CW seems to be working out for Supergirl.  So far we’ve seen appearances from Superman, Maggie Sawyer, and the Flash.

Gotham – I still have the last 9 episodes of season 2 sitting on the DVR, so things don’t look that great for my continued interest in Gotham this year.  But, you never know.

The backlog has grown to include those 9 season 2 episodes and all of season 3 to date.  I need to make a decision soon as to whether or not to cut bait.

Man With A Plan – Matt LeBlanc returns to network television in this comedy about a contractor who takes more responsibility at home after his wife returns to work.  It should be worth at least a shot.

One episode of this piece of garbage was more than enough.

Jane The Virgin – At this time last year, I was worried that this show would be a one-season wonder and that I would tire of the telenovela aspect of the show.  Those worries turned out to be unfounded, as the show continued to be a solid, entertaining watch.  I’m expecting more of the same this year.

My expectations have been met, as I continue to enjoy the now mistitled show.

2 Broke Girls – A 6th season for this crass show that has never been as good as it should be, given the talents of the leads.

This year has been more of the same.  It’s a shame to waste the talents of the two likeable leads on such a mess of a show.

2016 New Fall Season – Mondays

old-tv-set1It is time once again to dive in to the new fall lineups for the television season that kicks into gear tonight. We start this year, thanks to last night’s Emmy Awards, with Monday night’s offerings, which features some returning favorites and a few new potentials.

7:00

The Big Bang Theory – Once again, The Big Bang Theory moves back to Mondays until late October to accommodate the NFL.  The show continues to be a ratings powerhouse, so I assume the move won’t shake things up too much.

CBS Upfronts

bbtFor the first time this century, CBS announced a new fall schedule this week without a version of CSI in the mix.  Instead, the Tiffany network looked to other familiar properties, and stars, to fill the holes in their lineup.  With the network again airing football on Thursday nights for the first 2 months of the season, there will be much juggling going on, starting on Monday, where The Big Bang Theory returns until football ends.  It will be followed by Kevin Can Wait, a new show featuring former CBS star Kevin James.  Once football ends, James moves up a half hour and will be followed by Man With A Plan, starring former Friend Matt LeBlanc.  2 Broke Girls, The Odd Couple, and Scorpion round out the night.

Tuesday wraps two versions of NCIS around Bull, a new drama starring former NCIS star Michael Weatherly as, and you can’t make this up, a young version of Dr. Phil.  No changes on Wednesday night, where Criminal Minds returns for its 12th season.  Thursday, starting in November, starts with The Big Bang Theory, followed by the new Joel McHale-helmed The Great Indoors.  The night finishes with Pure Genius, a new drama from the creator of Parenthood.

Friday sees a new version of MacGuyver, followed by the returning Hawaii Five-O and Blue Bloods.  Sunday adds another version of NCIS to fill the hole left by The Good Wife.

Gone and never to be seen again are The Good Wife and summer staple Under The Dome.  Gone and destined to be seen again is Supergirl, which is moving to the CW.  Gone and maybe seen again is Limitless, which didn’t make the schedule but is not officially cancelled and is looking for a new home.

CBS Upfronts

Supergirl-CBSCBS once again will air a slate of Thursday night football games this fall, so many parts of their fall schedule will be delayed until November when their NFL commitment comes to an end.  Because of this, The Big Bang Theory once again moves back to Mondays to start the season.  Supergirl, the latest take on Superman’s cousin starring Melissa Benoist, takes over the 7 pm slot in November.

Limitless, based on the Bradley Cooper movie, joins the Tuesday night lineup, taking the place of Person of Interest, which is being held back until mid-season.  A new medical drama, Code Black, joins the Wednesday night staples of Survivor and Criminal Minds, whose spin-off, Criminal Minds: Beyond Borders, is also slated for mid-season.

Once football comes to an end, The Big Bang Theory moves back to Thursdays, leading off 2 hours of comedy topped off once again by Elementary.  Friday nights remain the same, while Sunday updates its version of the CSI franchise.

Also on the bench waiting for mid-season are The Odd Couple, 2 Broke Girls, and a dramatic version of Rush Hour, the Jackie Chan movie franchise.

Obviously, Supergirl is the big hook among the new shows.  It is disappointing to see Person of Interest not make the fall schedule, and rumors are that the network is talking to producers about wrapping up the show.

The Big Bang Theory – CBS spent $275 million to broadcast 8 Thursday night NFL games, so The Big Bang Theory moves back to Mondays until late October.  The show continues to be a ratings powerhouse, so hopefully the move doesn’t shake things up too much.

Now that the football season is over, the show has moved back to Thursdays, so I will save my comments for then.

2 Broke Girls – Once The Big Bang Theory returns to its Thursday perch, 2 Broke Girls will return to the Monday slot it inherited last spring from How I Met Your Mother.  At this point, the show is what it is, so there is no point on hoping that the writers move away from their lowest common denominator form of comedy.  As long as Beth Behrs and Kat Dennings continue to charm, I will continue to watch.  But their charms only go so far.

At this point, there is no sense in hoping that the show becomes more than what it already is.  As I said in the fall, the charms of Beth Behrs and Kat Dennings are really the only reason to keep watching.

Gotham – FOX gets in the superhero game with this Batman prequel, set in the days just after a young Bruce Wayne has witnessed the death of his parents.  The show has been sold as more of the Gotham police force dealing with the criminals that will one day become Batman’s fiercest foes.

After a rocky start, the show came around to be a pretty solid entry in the super hero universe.

Sleepy Hollow – I am going to be completely honest and say I don’t really remember much about the first season of this show, other than it was a little crazy and it didn’t exactly grab me as much as it seemigly did everyone else.  I guess I’ll stick around until/unless I find something to take its place.

I let the first half of the season pile up on the DVR before burning through them mostly in November.  The show is kind of crazy, and I did seem to enjoy it when I watched a paid attention.  Otherwise, it is still a bit of a blur.

Jane The Virgin – The first CW pilot in years to not feature either vampires or superheroes is an adaptation of a Venezuelen telenovela.  Early reports are that it is one of the better pilots of the fall, so I guess I can give it a shot.

I’ve been impressed with the show so far, but I can tell that the novelty will wear off rather quickly.

CBS Upfronts

PersonOfInterestRelevance1CBS, which fell behind NBC in the battle for 18-49 year olds thanks to the NFL and Olympics, mixed up their schedule for the fall at their upfront presentation this week.  After inking a deal to simulcast 8 weeks of Thursday Night Football, The Big Bang Theory will temporarily move back to Mondays, bumping 2 Broke Girls off the schedule until November.  Katharine McPhee stars in Scorpion, which will take the 8:00 hour.

Person of Interest stays where it is on Tuesday and Criminal Minds continues on Wednesdays.  Kevin Williamson brings a new drama, Stalker, to Wednesday featuring Dylan McDermott and Maggie Q.  Once the football commitment ends at the end of October, BBT and Elementary return to Thursdays.  The Amazing Race moves to Fridays, where it will be followed by holdovers Hawaii 5-0 and Blue Bloods.  The Good Wife continues on Sundays, where it will be joined be OG CSI and Tea Leoni’s new show, Madam Secretary.

The Mentalist will start off on the bench, along with a new version of The Odd Couple, starring Matthew Perry and Thomas Lennon.  Missing altogether is How I Met Your Dad, the “spinoff” of How I Met Your Mother that seemed like a shoe-in to get picked up.

Midseason Review – Mondays

How I Met Your Mother – Entering its 9th and final season, the show finally introduced the titular mother in last spring’s finale.  This entire season will take place over the weekend of Barney and Robin’s wedding, but should have some flashbacks and flashforwards involving the mother.

The show has worked best this season when the mother has been involved, which, sadly, hasn’t been too often.  The plan is for it to air without reruns through the series finale in March.

Bones – Also returning for its 9th season, Bonesstarts the year on Mondays but is scheduled to move to Fridays after the World Series.  Replacing it on Mondays will be

Well, FOX finally pulled the trigger and actually moved Bones to Fridays.  Not much to say about the show that hasn’t already been said.  It seems to just keep chugging along.

Almost Human – Brought to us by some of the good folks responsible for Fringe, I’ll give this a shot, assuming it ever does show up on Mondays.

We’re 9 episodes into the season and I’m still not sure what to make of this one.  More often than not, I find myself falling asleep during the show, which I guess doesn’t bode well for it.

2 Broke Girls – Entering its 3rd season, it is time to accept that this show is not going to change.  It will continue to feature two talented leads and surround them with base racial stereotypes and humor aimed towards the lowest common denominator.  To this point, the charm of the leads has been enough to overcome bad things about the show.  At some point, though, that is bound to change.

The status quo got shaken up a bit, first with the addition of the cupcake window at the back of the diner and then with the addition of the baking school. Continue reading →
