FB10: Week 28

A hellish week at work sends things tumbling south after two good vacation-filled weeks.  The week got off to an ok-ish start on Sunday, as I needed just 20 additional steps reach 4000.  Things picked up slightly on Monday, as I gained those 20 steps plus 72 more, falling 28 steps shy of 4100.  Things started to go bad at work on Tuesday, where an ECC call kept me 31 steps away from 3000.  A better Wednesday led to the highpoint of the week, with 4200 steps.  Another ECC call on Thursday left me 22 steps away from 2800.  An early morning full of meetings combined with the third ECC call of the week on Friday was even worse, finishing with 2500 steps.  The week wrapped up on Saturday with a disappointing 2700 steps.

Total steps: 23,256

Daily average: 3322.3

21 Is The Loneliest Number

Following last night’s 5-1 loss to the A’s, the White Sox have now tied the 1988 Orioles for the longest losing streak in American League history with 21 losses.  Only five teams in the history of Major League Baseball have lost more than 21 games in a row and only one of those streaks, by the 1961 Phillies, have come in the modern era.

197 pitchers have notched a win in the 26 days since a White Sox pitcher last won a game.  In the history of Major League Baseball, only seven franchises have had a stretch worse than the season record of the 2024 White Sox, who will try to get back on track tonight against the A’s.

No Longer Have What It Takes

Aerosmith formed in Boston in 1970, scoring their first hit, Dream On, in 1973.  After running into hard times in the early 80s, the band received a second life after Run-D.M.C. covered one of their hits in 1986.  Last week, the band announced they’d come to the end of the road, as singer Steven Tyler was unable to recover from a fractured larynx.

The band announced a farewell tour in May of 2023, scheduled to kick off that September.  Tyler suffered the injury just three dates into that tour, on September 9th at Elmont, New York.  The remainder of the tour was postponed to allow Tyler time to recover, but it was all for nought.  Those 40 postponed dates have no officially been cancelled.  While guitarist Joe Perry says he is not closing the door to recording new music in the future, the band has not released a new album since 2012.

Fifty Years Of Music – 2002

Fifty years ago, I made my first appeared on the Earth.  In celebration, we are going to take a look at the year-end Billboard Hot 100 singles chart for each year of my life and see what songs resonated with me at the time and if they continue to do so to this day.

We continue our look back at the music of my lifetime with 2002, the year I celebrated my 28th birthday.  Only 29 songs remain familiar to me today, with just 21 of them appearing in my collection in one way or another.

#96: Avril Lavigne – Sk8er Boi
iTunes stats: 29 plays

Peaking at #10, it gave Lavigne her second straight top ten hit and a Grammy nomination for Best Female Rock Vocal Performance.

#95: Alanis Morissette – Hands Clean

The lead single from Morissette’s fifth studio album, it reached #23 and was her last single to crack the Top 40.

How Do You Lose 20 Games In A Row?

The White Sox fell 13-7 to the Twins this afternoon, pushing their franchise-record losing streak to 20 games.  They now own the longest losing streak of the Wild Card era and are one of only twelve teams, dating back to 1889, to lose 20 or more games in a row.  They are now just one game away from tying the American League record, set by the 1988 Orioles, and three from the modern record, owned by the 1961 Phillies. Their franchise record falls to just two games over .500.

The White Sox head to Oakland for the final time and will look once again to snap their losing streak tomorrow night against the A’s.  It has now been 25 days since the White Sox last won a game and Pedro Grifol, who is 88-188 in his managerial career, is somehow still employed.

Stretching To 19

The White Sox extended their franchise-record losing streak to 19 games last night, losing to the Twins 6-2.  They are now tied for the 12th-longest losing streak in MLB history and have tied the 2005 Royals and the 2021 Orioles for the longest losing streak in the Wild Card era.  They are two games away from tying the American League record, set by the 1988 Orioles, and four from the modern record, owned by the 1961 Phillies.

The White Sox will look to snap their losing streak this afternoon by sending Chris Flexen to the mound.  They have lost Flexen’s previous 15 appearances, last winning a game he pitched on May 8th.  It has been 24 days since the White Sox last won a game and Pedro Grifol is still employed.

18 And Life

April 10, 2023 was the last time the White Sox won a game at Target Field, going 0 for their last 9 against the Twins on the road.  So, as the White Sox returned to Minnesota last night, it seemed an inopportune place for them to try and break their 17-game losing streak.  They have now lost ten in a row and Target Field and have extended their franchise-worst losing streak to 18 games.

A loss tonight would tie the White Sox with the 2005 Royals and the 2021 Orioles for the longest losing streak of the Wild Card era and would leave them just five behind the 1961 Phillies for the longest losing streak since 1900.  Their season record is now 27-88.  Only nine teams in MLB history have had a worse stretch of baseball, none of which occurred during a single season.

And, in case you were wondering, Pedro Grifol is still employed.

Selling Your Soul

The Cubs made their deal with the devil, Motorola in this case, on Thursday, agreeing to add an advertising patch to their jerseys as part of a multiyear deal to make the company the team’s “official smartphone.”  The patches made their on-field debut Thursday night against the Cardinals at Wrigley Field.

For the home pinstripes and road grays, the Motorola logo will have a blue background with a white M.  The alternate blue jerseys will have a white background with a blue M, while the City Connect jerseys will have a white background with a navy-blue M.  Motorola is also the jersey sponsor for the Padres in MLB and, in Chicago, the Bulls.

The Cubs become the 23rd MLB team to strike a uniform patch deal, worth an average of $7-8 million with the largest deals, believed to be with the Yankees and Blue Jays, worth over $20 million.

FB10: Week 27

The end of my week in Amsterdam led to an overall good week, though one that tailed off once I returned home.  The week got off to a slow start on Sunday, as I only left the apartment for a quick trip to the grocery store, which left me 35 steps shy of 3400.  Things picked up on Monday, my last full day in Amsterdam, as I bummed around the museum campus before dinner and a tour of the Red Light District, which pushed me up to 11,900 steps.  A trip to the airport on Tuesday got me to exactly 7000 steps.  One last day off for recovery on Wednesday saw my output drop to 3000 steps.  Giong back to work on Thursday left me 39 steps away from 3400.  Friday was even worse, as I needed an additional 5 steps just to reach 2900.  My first baseball game of the second half pushed up Saturday’s total, finishing with 6300 while watching the White Sox lose their 13th consecutive game.

Total steps: 37,921

Daily average: 5417.3
