Fitbit III: Week 16

After 2 down weeks, I managed to make it back over 50,000 steps for the week and finished above goal every day for the first time since early April.  Things got off to good start on Sunday, thanks to a Mother’s Day trip to Brookfield Zoo and, for the first time in years, decent weather.  The nice weather continued Monday and Tuesday, which enabled me to put in some extra time outside to far surpass the daily goal.  Wednesday managed to just barely surpass 6500 steps, while Thursday was able to use a trip to Michael’s band concert to cross the 7000 step barrier.  Friday was looking rough, until an after work trip to purchase a new mattress pushed me over the top.  Saturday was another big day, thanks to a pointless trip to Wrigley Field, where I stood in the rain for an hour waiting for the gates to open in order to get a bobblehead, only to have the game called literally 1 minute before the gates opened.

Total steps: 52,640

Daily average: 7520

iTunes Top 200 Artists: #31-40

3 years ago, we first counted down the then Top 100 artists in my iTunes library.  Since that time, I’ve successfully managed to migrate my music collection to a new PC with the stats intact.  So, I figured it was time to take another look, expanding out the field to the top 200 artists, based on number of plays from late 2007 through January 1, 2017.

Today we look at the next batch of artists, numbers 31-40, which includes a nice mix of musical genres.

#40: Tori Amos
iTunes stats: 128 plays
Previous ranking: #40

56 new listens for the same 11 songs over the past 3 years enable the singer/songwriter, who I was supposed to see live back in 1998 but missed due to a friend’s wedding, retain her position at #40.

#39: Harry Caray
iTunes stats: 129 plays
Previous ranking: #44

The legendary broadcaster moves up 5 spots in the rankings due to his 2 versions of Take Me Out To The Ballgame, one for the White Sox and one for the Cubs.

#38: Purdue All-American Marching Band
iTunes stats: 135 plays
Previous ranking: #34

The marching band for my alma mater drops 4 spots in the rankings due to only 49 new listens.

#37: No Doubt
iTunes stats: 136 plays
Previous ranking: #42

Thanks to 3 new songs and 65 new listens, the ska band I saw back in college before they hit it big jumps 5 spots in the rankings.

#35: Queen
iTunes stats: 148 plays
Previous ranking: #22

A big 13 spot drop for the band from England due mostly to their dropping off the White Sox victory playlist now more than 10 years removed from their 2005 World Series title.

#35: Metallica
iTunes stats: 148 plays
Previous ranking: #38

The one-time masters of metal manage to go up 3 spots in the rankings thanks to 69 new listens, despite Paul Konerko dropping them as his at bat music shortly before retiring.

The CW Upfronts

With the least number of spots to fill in their weekly lineup, the CW has added only 2 new shows to their fall slate.  Supergirl returns on Monday, where it will be followed by Valor, a drama about a military team sharing a secret after a botched mission in Somalia.  Tuesday remains the same, with the Flash and Legends of Tomorrow offering up a double dose of the DC universe.  Riverdale moves to Wednesdays, where it will be followed by a re-booted Dynasty.  Supernatural returns to Thursday for its 40th season, and will be followed by Arrow.  Crazy Ex-Girlfriend and Jane The Virgin reunite on Fridays.

iZombie will return at mid-season, along with Black Lightning, yet another show from DC, and Life Sentence, starring former Pretty Little Liar Lucy Hale.

Lost to the sands of time are The Vampire Diaries, Reign, No Tomorrow, and Frequency.

#27 – Jim Thome

Years With White Sox: 2006-2009

Fresh off their first World Series championship in 88 years, the White Sox looked to reload for their title defense by acquiring Jim Thome from the Phillies for Aaron Rowand, Gio Gonzalez, and Daniel Haigwood.  Thome made an immediate impact, setting a major league record by scoring in each of Chicago’s first 17 games and setting the team record with 10 home runs in April.  By season’s end, Thome had put up a .288 average with 42 home runs, 102 RBIs, and an OPS of 1.014.

The bottom fell out for the White Sox in 2007.  One of the few bright spots came in mid September, on Jim Thome bobblehead day, when Thome launched his 500th career home run, the first player to do so on a walk-off.  For the year, Thome hit .275, with 35 home runs and 96 RBIs.

2008 was a bit of a down year for Thome.  His average fell to .245 and his OPS to .865, but he still managed 34 home runs and 90 RBIs.  The most important of them came in the 163rd game of the year, as he hit a solo home run to give the White Sox a 1-0 victory over the Twins and the Central Division title.  Unfortunately, Thome struggled during the ALDS against the Rays, getting only 2 hits in 16 at bats.

2009 was another down year for the White Sox.  He was hitting .249 with 23 home runs and 74 RBIs when, on August 31, he was traded to the Dodgers for a warm body.

CBS Upfronts

With very few holes to fill in their lineup, CBS presents easily the least changed lineup for the fall.  With the network again airing football on Thursday nights for the first 2 months of the season, there will be much juggling going on, starting on Monday, where The Big Bang Theory returns until football ends.  It will be followed by 9JKL, a new show starring Mark Feuerstein, Linda Lavin, and Elliott Gould.  New comedy Me, Myself & I, with Bobby Moynihan about the defining moments in one man’s life over three distinct periods, is sandwiched between the returning Kevin Can Wait and Scorpion.  Once football ends, Kevin moves up to lead off the night and Superior Donuts moves in.

Tuesday stays exactly the same.  Wednesday night sees Criminal Minds move back an hour for its 13th season, with its old time slot given to Seal Team, starring David Boreanaz in a military drama that follows the professional and personal lives of the most elite unit of Navy SEALs.  Thursday, starting in November, starts with The Big Bang Theory, followed by the spin-off Young Sheldon, about, well, a young Sheldon Cooper.  The night finishes with S.W.A.T., a new drama based on the old series and film remake starring former Criminal Minds star Shemar Moore.

Friday stays exactly the same.  Sunday adds Wisdom of the Crowd, starring Jeremy Piven as a visionary tech innovator who creates a cutting-edge crowdsourcing app to solve his daughter’s murder, and revolutionizes crime solving in the process, which will in no way be the similar to last year’s APB, which bombed on FOX.

On tap for midseason, along side returning favorite Elementary, are Instinct, which stars Alan Cumming as a former CIA operative who is lured back to his old life when the NYPD needs his help to stop a serial killer, and By The Book, a comedy about a modern day man at a crossroads in his life who decides to live strictly in accordance with the Bible.

Gone and never to be seen again are The Great Indoors, 2 Broke Girls, The Odd Couple, Pure Genius, Criminal Minds: Beyond Borders, Doubt, Training Day, and Ransom.

ABC Upfronts

ABC is shaking up their lineup this fall, with changes on every night save Thursday.  The week gets off to a familiar start with Dancing With The Stars, followed by The Good Doctor, a new medical drama about an autistic country doctor who moves to the big city.  Seriously.  The Tuesday night comedies get switched around somewhat, with black-ish moving over from Wednesdays, followed by The Mayor, about a young wrapper looking for his big break.  The night ends with The Gospel of Kevin, starring Jason Ritter, JoAnna Garcia Swisher, and J. August Richards.

Wednesday stays mostly the same, with American Housewife moving over from Tuesdays to take black-ish‘s place.  Thursdays stay exactly the same, with the three Shondaland shows remaining in place.  A revamped Friday kicks off with Once Upon A Time, which will be losing most of its main cast, followed by Marvel’s Inhumans, the most recent attempt to make the Inhumans happen.  Sunday goes mostly reality, with To Tell The Truth and Shark Tank moving over.  The night ends with Ten Days In The Valley, a new drama about a producer whose daughter goes missing.

Agents of SHIELD will take over for The Inhumans on Fridays after 8 weeks and Quantico will return at some point for an abbreviated 3rd season.  Also on the bench for mid-season are The Crossing, a drama about war refugees from America, Deception, about a magician who turns to the FBI which is in no way similar to The Mentalist, and For The People, about a set of new lawyers trying to find their way.  Comedies include Alex Inc, based on a podcast, and Splitting Up Together, starring Jenna Fischer.

Cancelled shows never to be seen again are The Real O’Neals, Imaginary Mary, The Catch, Dr. Ken, Last Man Standing, American Crime, Secrets and Lies, Time After Time, Notorious, and Conviction.

FOX Upfronts

A year after banking their season on the return of old favorites, FOX has gone a different route this year.  Gotham loses its longtime home on Monday nights, replaced by The Gifted, based on Marvel’s X-Men characters, which will follow Lucifer.  Tuesdays will lead off with the second season of Lethal Weapon, followed by The Mick and Brooklyn Nine-Nine.  Wednesday takes a musical cue, with Empire followed by Star.

Gotham lands on Thursdays, followed by Seth MacFarlane’s first live-action show, The Orville.  Friday remains the same, with Hell’s Kitchen followed by The Exorcist.  A new comedy, Ghosted, moves in between The Simpsons and Family Guy on Sundays.

The final season of New Girl will appear at some point.  Also on tap for mid-season are The Resident, a groundbreaking medical drama starring, amongst others, Matt Czuchry and Emily VanCamp, and LA to Vegas, a comedy about a flight crew going back and forth between LA and Vegas.

Gone and mostly forgotten are APB, Making History, Pitch, Prison Break (which may return again in the future), Son of Zorn, 24: Legacy (again, may return in the future), Bones, Rosewood, Scream Queens, and Sleepy Hollow.

NBC Upfronts

NBC announced their new fall schedule yesterday and changes are afoot.  The week gets off to a familiar start with The Voice returning for another round on Mondays, followed by The Brave, a new drama starring Anne Heche which is sure to do well.  Tuesday has an attempt at a comedy hour, with Superstore and The Good Place sandwiched in-between The Voice and Chicago Fire.  Wednesday has 3 returning dramas, starting with The Blacklist.

The network will try to revitalize the Must See TV brand on Thursday, with the revamped Will & Grace leading off the night and this year’s breakout hit This Is Us, before a dramatized version of the Menendez brothers murders.  Blindspot moves to Fridays, where it will lead off the night.

Midseason will bring comedies A.P. Bio, starring Patton Oswalt, and Champions, from executive producer Mindy Kaling.  On the drama side, there is Good Girls, about suburban moms who decide to start robbing banks, Reverie, starring Sarah Shahi as a hostage negotiator, and Rise, from the people behind Parenthood.  Timeless, which was cancelled last week and then not cancelled, will also return at some point.

Cancelled shows include The Blacklist: Redemption, Chicago Justice, Emerald City, Powerless, Trial & Error, Grimm, and The Celebrity Apprentice.

iTunes Top 200 Artists: #41-49

3 years ago, we first counted down the then Top 100 artists in my iTunes library.  Since that time, I’ve successfully managed to migrate my music collection to a new PC with the stats intact.  So, I figured it was time to take another look, expanding out the field to the top 200 artists, based on number of plays from late 2007 through January 1, 2017.

We break in to the top 50 today, and cross the 100 listen barrier for the first time .

#49: Hole
iTunes stats: 97 plays
Previous ranking: #43

6 songs, written mostly by either Kurt Cobain or Billy Corgan, added only 28 new listens over the past 3 years for Courtney Love’s band, causing a 6 spot drop in the rankings.

#49: Boyz II Men
iTunes stats: 97 plays
Previous ranking: #53

The stars of my first concert added 48 new listens from their 9 tunes to raise 4 spots in the rankings.

#48: P.O.D.
iTunes stats: 99 plays
Previous ranking: #36

A big 12 spot drop in the rankings for the band responsible for Bobby Jenks’ walk-on music.

#47: Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers
iTunes stats: 103 plays
Previous ranking: #55

An average of just over 10 plays per track, thanks to more than doubling their number of listens over the past 3 years, enables the Florida rockers to jump 8 spots.

#46: Weird Al Yankovic
iTunes stats: 107 plays
Previous ranking: #49

The parody hit-maker nearly doubled the total number of listens for his 7 tracks over the past 3 years.

#45: Snoop Dogg
iTunes stats: 110 plays
Previous ranking: #46

The ganja-smoking gangsta rapper added 45 additional listens, enabling him to move up one spot in the rankings.

Fitbit III: Week 15

A slight bounce back, as I managed to get back over my weekly goal, though I still fell below 50,000 steps for the second consecutive week.  Things got off to a decent start on Sunday, as I just managed to sneak past 6500 steps as midnight struck thanks to an extra inning tilt at Wrigley Field between the Cubs and the Yankees.  Monday was another sneaker, due to me working from home, but an afternoon walk combined with the early morning steps coming home from the game helped push me over.  Tuesday I was back in the office, and numerous smoke breaks and a trip to North with Val put me well over the top.  Wednesday was another day at home, but rain kept me in the house, leading to a down day, despite a trip to out at night for Angelina’s scholarship night.  Thursday was back to work again, where I was able to rebound thanks to a post-work trip to the mall to spend a copious amount of money on a new car.  Friday again managed to just squeak by my daily step goal, thanks to time spent on the bed watching TV after work.  Saturday combined some chores around the house with a Sox game to give me my highest total of the week.

Total steps: 48,915
