Book 2 (of 52) – 10% Happier

10% Happier: How I Tamed The Voice In My Head, Reduced Stress Without Losing My Edge, And Found Self-Help That Actually Works – Dan Harris

Last fall, Dan Harris gave a talk at work that I tried to attend, but missed out on due to space issues.  Val managed to get in seemed intrigued by what he had to say, so, when his first book found itself on sale the week of her birthday, I bought us both a copy.  Harris, one of the stars of the news division at ABC, had documented his path to meditation and how he learned to integrate the precepts into his life.

My first taste of meditation came last year, courtesy of Val.  She recommended an app to help with my sleeping problems.  I used it on occasion, but certainly didn’t become a devote.  Having now read Harris’ book, I’m intrigued enough to give it another shot.

The book brought me in from the get go, where Harris says he originally wanted to call it “My Inner Voice is an Asshole.”  Val had said something very similar to me a few years ago when I told her about the insecurities that kept creeping up inside me regarding our relationship.  Harris tells of his long journey, from skeptic to interested student to proselytizer.  If 10% happier is achievable, it is a journey worth taking.

Fitbit III: Week 50

For the first time in 8 weeks, I surpassed my weekly goal.  Things got off to a good start on Sunday, as I notched my first 10,000 step day of 2018, thanks to a trip to the Museum of Science and Industry with Danny.  The work week got off to a decent enough start on Monday, finishing over 7200 steps.  Tuesday was a down day, as I finished below 5200 steps.  Wednesday was a nice bounce back, coming in over 7500 steps.  Thursday and Friday used coffee trips to surpass 7000 steps.  Saturday was a downer of a day, coming in just over 3000 steps.

Book 1 (of 52) – You Deserve A Drink

You Deserve A Drink: Boozy Misadventures And Tales Of Debauchery – Mamrie Hart

We begin 2018 with the first memoir from YouTube star Mamrie Hart.  You Deserve A Drink pairs drink recipes, a staple of her YouTube show, with stories from her life.

Hart brings us along for the ride of her childhood, through her college years at North Carolina, and to her 20s in New York.  Her tales are interesting and well worth the small amount of money I paid for them.  She recently released a follow up and, should I come across a good deal, I’ll gladly pick it up.

Fitbit III: Week 49

2017 came to a sad end and 2018 got off to a slow start in a week that could only be considered good based on what came before it.  Sunday, the last day of the year, could not even make it up to 2500 steps.  New Year’s Day managed to bump that number up to nearly 3000 steps.  Things got a bit better on Tuesday, as I returned to work for the first time in 3 weeks, ending up with nearly 7500 steps.  Wednesday was a little lower, back under 7000 steps.  Thursday was the high point of the week, coming in with almost 7800 steps.  Friday just eked past 7000 steps.  Saturday fell back down to 4200 steps, ending the week on a down note.

2017: The Year In Movies

Movie_Reel_22

2017 saw a slight downturn in movie watching for me, down 5 from the year before.  I managed to watch 83 movies last year, my sixth consecutive year under 100.  Again, many things contributed to this, chiefly the insane amount of TV I’ve been watching, the greater effort made towards going out for walks, and the awful amount of time I spend either at work or getting to and from work.

Here’s a look back at the first 50 movies I did manage to watch last year and what recollection, if any, I have of them. The films are listed in the order I saw them.

Bang Bang Baby (2015)
A strange musical that I only watched due to an appearance by the lovely and talented Jane Levy.

Mike And Dave Need Wedding Dates (2016)
Two ne’er do wells try to get responsible dates for their sister’s wedding.

A Good Old Fashioned Orgy (2011)
A group of friends decide to bid farewell to their summer hangout by holding an orgy.

Bad Moms (2016)
A trio of moms that don’t have their shit together band together to take on the PTA.

Haunter (2013)
A horror flick starring Abigail Breslin that I have no recollection of.

Pay The Ghost (2015)
The latest direct-to-video smash from Nicolas Cage.

Cabin Fever (2016)
A remake of the 2002 “smash” hit.

Into The Forest (2016)
A power outage forces two sisters to learn how to survive alone in the wilderness.

Self/less (2015)
Ryan Reynolds stars as a man who starts to remember his past despite having a old man’s consciousness implanted into his body.

Neighbors 2: Sorority Rising (2016)
A sorority moves in next door to Seth Rogen in this sequel. Continue reading →

Fitbit III: Week 48

While the week between Christmas and New Year’s is traditionally slow, this week was almost historically bad.  Friday was the only day to pass 4000 steps, and it still fell nearly 1000 steps below my goal.  The week’s total was my worst performance since the abbreviated first week ever with the Fitbit and my worst full week since the similar timed week in 2015.

52 Books in 52 Weeks – 2018 Edition

bookshelfA new year is once again upon us, and it is time to start year nine of the goal to read a book a week for the entire year, totaling 52 books in 52 weeks.  In year one, I only made it to 8 books.  Year two doubled that total.  Year three used graphic novels to improve once again, finishing with 24.  Year four was the first where I dropped from the year before, only finishing 18 books, which was well short of the ultimate goal.  Year five, I bounced back to finish with 23 books.  Three years ago, I had my best year since starting this challenge, not to mention my best reading year ever, finishing with 31 books.  Two years ago, I matched that high point in total books, though far surpassing it in total pages read thanks to reading the entire Harry Potter series.  Last year, I dropped back down to 28.

I’m going to give it another go this year.  I’ve got a plenty of new books loaded in the Kindle app on my iPad, plus a few new purchases from Amazon, not to mention one or two birthday and Christmas presents, so I’ve got a good pile to start with.  As a reminder, the rules I am using are:

  • You can count a book as read as long as you have completed the book in 2018 and at least 50% of that reading takes place in 2018
  • Any book counts as long as you’re not embarrassed to count it.
  • Poetry collections do indeed count.
  • Re-reading a book is okay as long as it isn’t done this year. (Reading Twilight twice in 2010 only counts as 1 read)
  • Audiobooks also count.

My first book of the year looks like it will be You Deserve A Drink, the first memoir from internet sensation Mamrie Hart.  All told, 2018 should be another good year.

2017: The Year In Books

With another year coming to an end, it is time to take a look back at the 28 books I read over the past year, 3 less than last year.  Of those 28, 7 were non-fiction and, of the 21 novels, only 4 were TV show tie-ins.  For the first time, none of the books came out of my “to-read” drawer, and a record 16 were e-books.  I read over 80,000 pages, my lowest total since at least 2013.

Once again, a majority of the books I read this year were by authors I’ve never read before. The 15 authors that I read for the first this year were:
Amy Schumer
Jessie Humphries
Gene Kim
Tod Goldberg
Matt Zoller Seitz
Philip K. Dick
Harland Sanders
Paul Levine
William J. Mann
Matthew V. Clemmons
Chris Smith
Riley Sager
Whitney Cummings
Neil deGrasse Tyson
Tom Perrotta

There were 4 authors I read multiple titles from during 2016, the ghost writer for Richard Castle, Jeffery Deaver, David Mack, and Erle Stanley Gardner.

7 of the books I read were released this year, while 3 of them were released last century.

Finally, the breakdown by month.  Vacation in December certainly helped pad its totals a tad bit.
