Book 14 (of 52) – Murder On The Orient Express
When renowned detective Hercule Poirot is called back to London, he takes an unexpected ride on the Orient Express. A murder on board the train, stuck in Yugoslavia due to snow, puts Poitot into action, as he, along with the trains doctor and an executive of the train company, must determine who is behind the gruesome act. What he finds is a well-planned conspiracy, getting revenge for another crime a continent away.
First published in 1934, Agatha Christie’s classic tale of intrigue plays out slowly, building to a crescendo. While this wasn’t my first exposure to Christie’s work, it was my first with her classic character Poirot. I’m not sure if I would go out of my way to find more of her work, but, should I come across it, I would probably give it a read.
Fitbit V: Week 22
The Independence Of Summer
Over, Yonder
Yesterday, the White Sox designated Yonder Alonso for assignment, ending a painful half season for the veteran slugger on the South Side. In 251 plate appearances, the 32-year-old slugger has struggled to a career-worst .178/.275/.301 slash line, with 7 homers and 27 RBIs in 67 games. Acquired in December in part to attract his brother-in-law Manny Machado to sign with the White Sox as a free agent, Alonso was also expected to add some left handed pop and potentially be a bridge to the future if Jose Abreu, a free agent after this season, moves on. Unfortunately, none of those things worked out.
Alonso’s numbers in a White Sox uniform, both for games I attended and overall, were:
| BA | AtBats | Runs | Hits | RBIs | Walks | StrikeOuts | Doubles | Triples | HomeRuns | StolenBases | GIDPs | Errors | Games |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 0.094 | 32 | 1 | 3 | 3 | 3 | 6 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 2 | 0 | 11 |
| 0.178 | 219 | 23 | 39 | 27 | 29 | 53 | 6 | 0 | 7 | 0 | 8 | 2 | 67 |
Post Mortem – For The People
For The People, produced by Shonda Rhimes, was cancelled after 2 seasons on ABC. The legal drama followed new lawyers, both prosecutors and federal public defenders, as they handle the most high-profile and high-stakes cases and their personal lives intersect.
I was initially drawn to the show by Britt Robertson and Jasmin Savoy Brown, who had impressed in previous works, but Susannah Flood stole the show. I look forward to what she may be up to next.
