2015: The Year In Movies

Movie_Reel_22

2015 was a bit of a letdown after last year’s improvement in movie watching for me, with the vacation over the past 3 weeks of December helping to greatly boost my total.  I managed to watch 69 movies last year, 9 less than last year and my fourth consecutive year under 100.  Again, many things contributed to this, chiefly the insane amount of TV I’ve been watching, the greater effort made towards going out for walks, and the awful amount of time I spend either at work or getting to and from work.

Here’s a look back at the first 50 movies I did manage to watch last year and what recollection, if any, I have of them. The films are listed in the order I saw them.

Labor Day (2014)
A bit of a dud of a film and a poor way to start the year.

Bachelorette (2012)
This received nowhere near as much publicity as the similar themed Bridesmaids, but I enjoyed it much more.

The Last Exorcism Part II (2013)
Turns out I never saw the first one, which could explain why this made little sense to me.

The Factory (2012)
John Cusack and Jennifer Carpenter team up to do cop stuff.

Godzilla (2014)
A much better remake attempt than the Matthew Broderick endeavor in 1998.

Drinking Buddies (2013)
An interesting indie film about a Chicago brewery and the people that work there.

Life After Beth (2014)
The latest zombie rom-com.

Butter (2011)
Who knew butter carving could be so entertaining?

Devil’s Due (2014)
A newlywed becomes impregnated with a hellspawn.

Tusk (2014)
Kevin Smith’s latest makes me think it may be time for me to stop watching Kevin Smith films.

The Other Woman (2014)
Cameron Diaz learns that her boyfriend is married and has another girlfriend on the side.

Save The Date (2012)
Lizzy Caplan tries to work on her relationship while dealing with her younger sister’s upcoming wedding.

This Is Where I Leave You (2014)
Jason Bateman, Tina Fey, and others sit shiva for their deceased father.

Captain Phillips (2013)
Tom Hanks loses a boat.

Avengers: Age Of Ultron (2015)
The first film I saw in the theater in 2015.

Lucy (2014)
Scarlett Johansson uses her brain to its full potential, evolves into some black thingy.

Kick-Ass 2 (2013)
The sequel nobody was asking for.

Neighbors (2014)
The tale of a frat house that moves in to a residential neighborhood, causing trouble along the way.

Into The Storm (2014)
A Twister rip-off that somehow turned out better than it had any right to be.

Normal Doors (2015)
A short I have no recollection of, beyond starring the beautiful Emily Bett Rickards.

Immediately Afterlife (2014)
2 of the Pretty Little Liars survive the mass suicide of a cult and aren’t sure why.

The DUFF (2015)
The latest version of the ugly duckling finding out that she is really a swan.

Road Hard (2015)
The crowd-funded film from Adam Carolla which repeated many of the jokes from his podcast.

Machete Kills (2013)
The not-as-fun sequel to the 2010 grindhouse favorite.

Conventional (2015)
Karen Gillan’s short about a scream queen’s life at a convention.

The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 2 (2015)
The franchise comes to a satisfying end.

An Adventure In Space And Time (2013)
The story of the beginnings of Doctor Who, which I finally watched because the DVR it was on needed replacing.

Return To House On Haunted Hill (2007)
A miserable sequel to the remake of the Vincent Price classic.

Dark Places (2015)
The film adaptation of Gillian Flynn’s second novel.

The Wolverine (2013)
The second underwhelming Wolverine solo outing.

This Is 40 (2012)
Paul Rudd and Leslie Mann deal with middle age.

Uneventful (2015)
A short about a woman who hides her weekend from her co-workers.

Much Ado About Nothing (2013)
Joss Whedon’s adaptation of the Shakespeare play filmed in his home during post-production on Avengers.

White Bird In A Blizzard (2014)
A young girl avoids dealing with the disappearance of her mother.

Between Us (2012)
A miserable film about miserable couples who keep intersecting.

Jurassic World (2015)
A return to form for the dinosaur franchise.

Sleepaway Camp III: Teenage Wasteland (1989)
The final installment of this particular trilogy was pur garbage.

The Black Tulip (2013)
I have no earthly idea what this was or what it was about.

Every Secret Thing (2014)
Elizabeth Banks stars as a cop looking for a missing child.

The Conjuring (2013)
Paranormal spirits haunt a family’s new home.

The Purge: Anarchy (2014)
An expanded look at the universe introduced in the original film.

Ask Me Anything (2014)
A young girl with daddy issues keeps making poor choices regarding the men in her life.

Insurgent (2015)
The second installment of the Divergent series seems to have gone off the rails a bit.

Taken 3 (2015)
The final installment of the Taken trilogy allows Liam Neeson to show off his particular set of skills one final time.

White Noise 2: The Light (2007)
A cheap sequel which had nothing to do with the original beyond reusing the name.

Star Wars: The Force Awakens (2015)
The third trilogy begins with a return to form, removing the taste of the disappointing prequels from everyone’s mouth.

Raze (2014)
Women are kidnapped and forced to fight to the death in order to earn their freedom.

Ant-Man (2015)
The strangest Marvel film to date struck a good balance between humor and action.

The Starving Games (2013)
A send-up of the Hunger Games franchise that probably didn’t really need to be made.

Trainwreck (2015)
Amy Schumer’s coming out party that was the comedy hit of the summer.
