2015 Emmy Awards – Reality and Movies

Emmy_statueWith the Emmy Awards scheduled for Sunday night, here’s day two of my predictions for the awards, today focusing on reality shows and made for TV movies.  I likely have seen not seen most (any?) of these, so I will probably not have an informed decision, but when has that ever stopped me.

Outstanding Reality Show Host

Tom Bergeron, Dancing With the Stars

Anthony Bourdain, The Taste

Cat Deeley, So You Think You Can Dance

Heidi Klum and Tim Gunn, Project Runway

Jane Lynch, Hollywood Game Night

Jane Lynch already took home the prize for hosting NBC’s hit game show.

Outstanding Reality Show Competition

The Amazing Race

Dancing With the Stars

Project Runway

So You Think You Can Dance

Top Chef

The Voice

The Amazing Race took back the crown last year, and I’m betting that it keeps it again this year.

Outstanding Variety Talk Series

The Colbert Report

The Daily Show With Jon Stewart

Jimmy Kimmel Live

Last Week Tonight With John Oliver

The Late Show With David Letterman

The Tonight Show With Jimmy Fallon

What a tough category, as 3 of the shows wrapped up wildly successful runs earlier this year.  That said, I think John Oliver and his HBO show, Last Week Tonight, certainly deserves the award.

Outstanding Variety Sketch Series

Drunk History

Inside Amy Schumer

Key & Peele

Portlandia

Saturday Night Live

The sexy choice here would be to go with Amy Schumer, since she seems to be on top of the world, but I think the recently-wrapped up Key & Peele will win the prize.

Outstanding TV Miniseries

American Crime

American Horror Story: Freak Show

The Honorable Woman

Olive Kitteridge

Wolf Hall

The miniseries and movie category was once again split out this year, which means there’s another category that I know nothing about.  I am going to give the nod to AHS, based on nothing more than a feeling.

Outstanding TV Movie

Agatha Christie’s Poirot: Curtain, Poirot’s Last Case

Bessie

Grace of Monaco

Hello Ladies: The Movie

Killing Jesus

Nightingale

Well, I’ve never heard of most of these, but thankfully Bessie already took home the award.

Lead Actress In A TV Miniseries or Movie

Maggie Gyllenhaal, The Honorable Woman

Felicity Huffman, American Crime

Jessica Lange, American Horror Story: Freak Show

Queen Latifah, Bessie

Frances McDormand, Olive Kitteridge

Emma Thompson, Live from Lincoln Center – Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street in Concert with the New York Philharmonic

Despite not having seen it, I’m going to go with Emma Thompson’s performance in Sweeney Todd.

Lead Actor In A TV Miniseries or Movie

Adrien Brody, Houdini

Ricky Gervais, Derek: The Special

Timothy Hutton, American Crime

Richard Jenkins, Olive Kitteridge

David Oyelowo, Nightingale

Mark Rylance, Wolf Hall

Not having seen any of these, I’m going to take a shot in the dark and say that Ricky Gervais will win the award.

Outstanding Supporting Actress In A TV Miniseries or Movie

Angela Bassett, American Horror Story: Freak Show

Kathy Bates, American Horror Story: Freak Show

Zoe Kazan, Olive Kitteridge

Regina King, American Crime

Mo’Nique, Bessie

Sarah Paulson, American Horror Story: Freak Show

My best guess, having missed all of this quality programming, is that Kathy Bates will be bringing home the trophy.

Outstanding Supporting Actor In A TV Miniseries or Movie

Richard Cabral, American Crime

Damian Lewis, Wolf Hall

Bill Murray, Olive Kitteridge

Denis O’Hare, American Horror Story: Freak Show

Michael K. Williams, Bessie

Finn Wittrock, American Horror Story: Freak Show

Something tells me that, given the opportunity to give Bill Murray an Emmy, the academy will give Bill Murray an Emmy.
