2013 Emmy Awards – Reality and Movies

With the Emmy Awards scheduled for Sunday night, here’s day two of my predictions for the awards, today focusing on reality shows and made for TV movies.  I most likely have seen not seen most of these, so I will likely not have an informed decision, but when has that ever stopped me.

Outstanding Reality Show Host

Ryan Seacrest, American Idol

Betty White, Betty White’s Off Their Rockers

Tom Bergeron, Dancing With the Stars

Heidi Klum and Tim Gunn, Project Runway

Cat Deeley, So You Think You Can Dance

Anthony Bourdain, The Taste

Tom Bergeron won this last year, and that seems like as good a reason as any for him to win it again.

Outstanding Reality Show Competition

The Amazing Race

Dancing With the Stars

Project Runway

So You Think You Can Dance

Top Chef

The Voice

I think The Amazing Race has won this every year its been on the air.  I see no reason for that streak to end now.

Outstanding Variety, Music, or Comedy Series

The Colbert Report

The Daily Show With Jon Stewart

Jimmy Kimmel Live

Late Night With Jimmy Fallon

Real Time With Bill Maher

Saturday Night Live

Another perennial winner should continue to bring home the big prize, although I wonder if Jon Stewart’s extended absence this summer will hurt the show in the voter’s minds.

Outstanding TV Miniseries or Movie

American Horror Story: Asylum

Behind the Candelabra

The Bible

Phil Spector

Political Animals

Top of the Lake

Definitely some heavy hitters here, but I would expect HBO’s tale of Liberace’s love affair with a young boy toy, directed by Steven Soderbergh, to run away with this.

Lead Actress In A TV Miniseries or Movie

Jessica Lange, American Horror Story: Asylum

Laura Linney, The Big C: Hereafter

Helen Mirren, Phil Spector

Sigourney Weaver, Political Animals

Elisabeth Moss, Top of the Lake

While I would like to see Elisabeth Moss win for Top of the Lake, I would expect Jessica Lange to bring home her second straight trophy for American Horror Story.

Lead Actor In A TV Miniseries or Movie

Michael Douglas, Behind the Candelabra

Matt Damon, Behind the Candelabra

Toby Jones, The Girl

Benedict Cumberbatch, Parade’s End

Al Pacino, Phil Spector

To my mind, this really comes down to either Michael Douglas or Matt Damon.  I would expect Douglas to get the nod, especially given his recent bout with cancer.

Outstanding Supporting Actress In A TV Miniseries or Movie

Sarah Paulson, American Horror Story: Asylum

Imelda Staunton, The Girl

Ellen Burstyn, Political Animals

Charlotte Rampling, Restless

Alfre Woodard, Steel Magnolias

Honestly, I don’t have much of an opinion here, so I’ll go with Ellen Burstyn.

Outstanding Supporting Actor In A TV Miniseries or Movie

James Cromwell, American Horror Story: Asylum

Zachary Quinto, American Horror Story: Asylum

Scott Bakula, Behind The Candelabra

John Benjamin Hickey, The Big C: Hereafter

Peter Mullan, Top of the Lake

Again, I don’t have any clue here as I haven’t really seen much of these, but I’ll go with James Cromwell.
