Book 2 (of 52) – Frozen Heat

Frozen Heat - Richard Castle

Frozen Heat – Richard Castle

The latest work from Richard Castle, the author played by Nathan Fillion in the television show Castle, tackles familiar territory to fans of the show: the murder of Beckett’s, or in this case Nikki Heat’s, mother.  Of course, the book takes the story in a wildly different direction, adding in some crazy spy action.

Castle’s tale, or at least the one spun by ghost writer hired to portray him, starts with a murder that ties in to the murder of Heat’s mother 10 years earlier.  While trying to solve both murders, Heat and Rook travel to Boston and Paris and learn about the secret life that put Heat’s mother on the path that led to her death.  With the mystery of who killed her mother solved, Nikki Heat is left wondering why.

The ending leaves an obvious path for the next book to pick up and run with.  Given the continuing popularity of the show, one could assume that the next installment will be out in the fall to coincide with the new season.  I’m definitely looking forward to it.

Book 3 (of 52) – Heat Rises

Richard Castle - Heat Rises

The third tie-in novel from Castle character Richard Castle again takes us inside the world of NYPD detective Nikki Heat as she deals with a dead priest, a sex dungeon, and office politics.  We certainly are not looking at hard-hitting, award winning fiction here, but, if you are a fan of the show, this will certainly be an enjoyable way to pass a few hours.

And, for all you Browncoats out there, there is a little Easter egg waiting for you at some point.

Prolific Authors

Since I haven’t finished a book in a while (although I should get one done soon), I thought I would take a look back at the authors I have read the most.  Since I started keeping track, I have read books by 181 different authors, but we will only be looking at those whom I have read more than once.

Author Name Total
Nancy Holder 13
Christopher Golden 12

Most, if not all of these are due to Buffy and Angel tie-in novels.

Greg Rucka 11
Stephen King 9

Strange that these two are bunched together, as I have read all of Rucka’s non-tie-in work, and I haven’t read anything by King in years. That may change next year, though. Continue reading →

Book 1 (of 52) – Naked Heat

Naked Heat - Richard Castle

Naked Heat - Richard Castle

Book 1 of 2011 is the second Nikki Heat novel written by “Richard Castle”, based on NYPD detective Kate Beckett.  Just like the first one, this was a surprisingly good yarn that can be enjoyed by fans of the TV show Castle or by anyone who enjoys a little murderous fun.  I’ll be looking forward to the resulting book from season 3.

Book 2 (of 52) – Heat Wave

Heat Wave - Richard Castle

Heat Wave - Richard Castle

Book 2 for 2010 is a tie-in novel from the ABC show Castle.  Unlike most tie-ins though, this one doesn’t tell a new tale with characters from the show; it is a plot point in the show itself.  Richard Castle, played by Nathan Fillion, is a best selling novelist who tags along with a homicide detective, portrayed by Stana Katic, to get information for his newest book.  Heat Wave is the result in the show, and was released in the real world as well as the latest thriller from “Richard Castle”.  The real author is so far unrevealed.

The book mirrors the set up of the show.  Nikki Heat is a NYC homicide detective investigating the links between a dead millionaire and an art heist while putting up with a journalist who has talked his way into a ride along.  The novel is a fun, but quick, read, coming in at just under 200 pages.  It moves quickly, following the same basic structure of the show (you can practically feel the commercial breaks between chapters) along with what is meant to be some wish-fullfillment on the “author’s” part.  Even for non-fans of the show, it provides an entertaining story that can be knocked out in a night or two.

As for the whole 52 in 52 concept, I’ve fallen a little behind as we enter week 3 of 2010.  But, I’m currently working on 3 other books, so hopefully I’ll catch up and maybe even get ahead to build up a little cushion for summer.
