2014 Emmy Awards – Reality and Movies

Emmy_statueWith the Emmy Awards scheduled for Monday night, here’s day two of my predictions for the awards, today focusing on reality shows and made for TV movies.  I likely have seen not seen most (any?) of these, so I will probably not have an informed decision, but when has that ever stopped me.

Outstanding Reality Show Host

Jane Lynch, Hollywood Game Night

Betty White, Betty White’s Off Their Rockers

Tom Bergeron, Dancing With the Stars

Heidi Klum and Tim Gunn, Project Runway

Cat Deeley, So You Think You Can Dance

Anthony Bourdain, The Taste

Tom Bergeron has won this in the past, and that seems like as good a reason as any for him to win it again.

Outstanding Reality Show Competition

The Amazing Race

Dancing With the Stars

Project Runway

So You Think You Can Dance

Top Chef

The Voice

The Voice broke The Amazing Race‘s winning streak last year, but I’m thinking the CBS adventure show takes back the crown this year.

Outstanding Variety, Music, or Comedy Series

The Colbert Report

The Daily Show With Jon Stewart

Jimmy Kimmel Live

The Tonight Show With Jimmy Fallon

Real Time With Bill Maher

Saturday Night Live

The Colbert Report broke through last year and wrestled the award away from his pals at TDS.  Given that the show will be wrapping up soon so that Colbert can move over to CBS to take over for Letterman, I would think he will win another award as a going away gift.

Outstanding TV Miniseries

American Horror Story: Coven

Fargo

The White Queen

Bonnie And Clyde

Treme

The miniseries and movie category was split out this year, which means there’s another category that I know nothing about.  I am going to give the nod to Fargo, based on nothing more than having seen the movie years ago.

Outstanding TV Movie

The Normal Heart

The Trip To Bountiful

Killing Kennedy

Sherlock: His Last Vow

Muhammad Ali’s Greatest Fights

It seems as though The Normal Heart is the runaway choice here.

Lead Actress In A TV Miniseries or Movie

Jessica Lange, American Horror Story: Coven

Sarah Paulson, American Horror Story: Coven

Helena Bonham Carter, Burton And Taylor

Minnie Driver, Return To Zero

Kristen Wiig, The Spoils Of Babylon

Cicely Tyson, The Trip To Bountiful

Despite not having seen it, I’m going to go with Kristen Wiig’s performance in The Spoils Of Babylon.

Lead Actor In A TV Miniseries or Movie

Chiwetel Ejiofor, Dancing On The Edge

Martin Freeman, Fargo

Billy Bob Thornton, Fargo

Benedict Cumberbatch, Sherlock: His Last Vow

Idris Elba, Luther

Mark Ruffalo, The Normal Heart

While I’m sure the Emmy will end up going to one of the Fargo actors, my sentimental favorite, meaning the only one that I’ve seen, is Benedict Cumberbatch from Sherlock.

Outstanding Supporting Actress In A TV Miniseries or Movie

Frances Conroy, American Horror Story: Coven

Kathy Bates, American Horror Story: Coven

Angela Bassett, American Horror Story: Coven

Ellen Burstyn, Flowers In The Attic

Allison Tolman, Fargo

Julia Roberts, The Normal Heart

The Emmys love giving awards to movie stars who “slum” in television projects, so I assume Julia Roberts will take home this prize.

Outstanding Supporting Actor In A TV Miniseries or Movie

Colin Hanks, Fargo

Jim Parsons, The Normal Heart

Joe Mantello, The Normal Heart

Alfred Molina, The Normal Heart

Matt Bomer, The Normal Heart

Martin Freeman, Sherlock: His Last Vow

If one were to assume that The Normal Heart crew will split the vote, that leaves the choice down to either Colin Hanks or Martin Freeman.  Given that I’ve seen Sherlock, I’m going to give the nod to Freeman.
