All Season Batting Leaders – Through 2025

It’s been six years since we last took a look at the offensive stat leaders per season for the all the games I’ve attended since 1984. Fifty Years Of Music – 2017

Fifty years ago, I made my first appeared on the Earth.  In celebration, we are going to take a look at the year-end Billboard Hot 100 singles chart for each year of my life and see what songs resonated with me at the time and if they continue to do so to this day.

We continue our look back at the music of my lifetime with 2017, the year I turned 43.  Only four of these songs are familiar to me today, with just half of them appearing in my collection in one way or another.

#39: Taylor Swift – Look What You Made Me Do
iTunes stats: 18 plays

The lead single from her sixth studio album, it spent three weeks atop the Hot 100 in September of 2017.

#9: Imagine Dragons – Believer
iTunes stats: 16 plays

The at bat song for former White Sox third baseman Matt Davidson, it was the band’s third top ten single, peaking at #4.

#2: Luis Fonsi and Daddy Yankee featuring Justin Bieber – Despacito
iTunes stats: N/A

Spending 16 weeks at #1, it was the first primarily Spanish language song to top the charts since 1996.

#1: Ed Sheeran – Shape of You
iTunes stats: N/A

The final song written for Sheeran’s third album, it debuted at #1 on the Hot 100 for a week and then returned for an eleven-week run after a two week break.

Against The Tigers All Time Leaders – Through 2021

tigersIn the past, we’ve looked at the all time leaders in both offensive and defensive categories for all 30 teams. This offseason, we will take our first ever look at those leaders against all 30 clubs. We continue today with the Detroit Tigers.

The Tigers began life in 1894 as part of the Western League and became a charter franchise of the American League in 1901, making them the oldest one city, one name franchise in the American League.  I’ve seen them play 57 times, including the second game ever, and my first game, at the new Comiskey Park.

Two Non-Tenders, A Trade, And A Pizza Place

Earlier today, the White Sox began clearing the deck of pieces they do not expect to be part of the team’s future success, dealing catcher Omar Narváez to the Mariners and not tendering 2019 contracts to Avisail García and Matt Davidson.  In return for Narváez, the White Sox received relief pitcher Álex Colomé.

Narváez, who broke out offensively last year and led the White Sox in fWAR, would, at first glance, seem to be someone to contribute to the future success of the White Sox.  His poor defense, however, would seem to say otherwise.  He was near the league’s worst in both passed balls and pitch framing, according to publicly available metrics, and the White Sox obviously thought he had little chance of improving.  Colomé should help improve a bullpen that was in dire need of talent at the end of 2018.

As for García and Davidson, the decision to cut ties with the duo probably had as much to do with their expected arbitration numbers than anything else.  García’s expected salary was around $8 million, which is chump change if he were to duplicate his 2017 season, but, at this point in his career, that does looks more and more to be an outlier.  With Eloy Jimenez expected to join the White Sox in mid-April, García became expendable.  Davidson, despite providing some unexpected flexibility last year as a mop-up reliever, never truly lived up to his potential.  He can still hit for power, but not much else, and the White Sox obviously thought they had seen everything there was to see from him.

García’s, Davidson’s, and Narváez’s numbers in a White Sox uniform, both for games I attended and overall, were: Continue reading →

#166 – Addison Reed

areed

Name: Addison Reed

Rank: 166

Position: P

Years With White Sox: 2011-2013

Addison Reed was the 3rd round draft pick of the White Sox in 2010.  He made his major league debut the following September, giving up 4 hits and 1 earned run in an inning and two thirds as the White Sox were blown out by the Tigers 18-4.  Reed appeared in 5 other games down the stretch as the White Sox finished up a disappointing season.

Reed made the White Sox bullpen out of spring training in 2012.  He picked up his first career save on May 5 and was officially named the closer by manager Robin Ventura on May 23.  He finished the season with 29 saves, despite an ERA near 5, as the White Sox faded out of contention over the season’s last month.

2013 saw Reed again holding down the closer role for the White Sox.  On August 22, he saved his sixth consecutive game, becoming the first White Sox reliever to accomplish the feat and the first overall since Eric Gagne in 2003.  When the season came to an end, he wound up with 40 saves in 48 opportunities, and he had lowered his ERA by nearly a run from the year before.

That December, Reed was traded to the Diamondbacks for minor league third baseman Matt Davidson, drawing his White Sox career to a close.

Reed’s numbers in a White Sox uniform, both for games I attended and overall, were:

Remaking The White Sox

addisonmattLess than a week after acquiring center fielder Adam Eaton from the Diamondbacks in a three team trade that sent Hector Santiago to the Angels, White Sox GM Rick Hahn struck again, this time getting third baseman Matt Davidson from the Diamondbacks in exchange for closer Addison Reed.  Add in Avisail Garcia, acquired in the Jake Peavy trade in July, and the signing of Cuban refugee Jose Abreu and the White Sox have added 4 players under the age of 27 who should form the foundation of the team going forward.

Davidson is ranked 64th on MLB.com’s Top 100 prospect list and was the Diamondback’s 2nd best prospect.  He hit .280 with 32 doubles, 17 home runs, 74 RBIs, 55 runs scored, a .350 on-base percentage and a .481 slugging percentage in 115 games at Triple-A in 2013.  He also took home MVP honors at the Futures Game during All Star weekend at Citi Field.

The closer role will likely fall to Nate Jones, barring any new acquisitions between now and opening day.  An opening day that could have the White Soc fielding 4 different starters from a year ago, hopefully leading them to future glory.
