FB4: Week 49

Another good week, thanks mostly to spending New Year’s in California.  The week got off to a decent enough start on Sunday, where a trip to Pasadena to attend Band Fest and see the float barn at the Rose Bowl garnered over 7200 steps.  Monday came in just over 10,000 steps, thanks to a trip to Warner Bros. Studios followed by dinner in Beverly Hills.  Tuesday, New Year’s Day, was the big day of the week, with over 13,600 steps thanks to a return trip to Pasadena for the Rose Parade.  Wednesday wrapped up my time in California with a trip to California ScienCenter to see King Tut and the space shuttle Endeavor and a quick stop at the beach, to the tune of 8400 steps.  Thursday was down to 4200 steps, as I spent the last day of vacation recovering from the previous week.  Friday I returned to work, where I was able to get over 8700 steps.  Saturday was the low point of the week, as I didn’t leave the house and ended up with a mere 1600 steps.

2018: The Year In Movies

Movie_Reel_22

The loss of my annual long December vacation saw a slight downturn in movie watching for me, with my lowest total since 1988.  I managed to watch 55 movies last year, my seventh consecutive year under 100 and my lowest total since 1993.  Again, many things contributed to this, chiefly the insane amount of TV I’ve been watching, the greater effort made towards going out for walks, and the awful amount of time I spend either at work or getting to and from work.

Here’s a look back at the first 50 movies I did manage to watch last year and what recollection, if any, I have of them. The films are listed in the order I saw them.

The French Connection (1971)
Hailed as one of the best films of the 70s, I can’t say it plays well here in the 21st century.

Cobra (1986)
Somehow I missed this Stallone “classic” back in the day.

Table 19 (2017)
The misfit table at a wedding bands together to settle scored, both old and new.

Jumanji: Welcome To The Jungle (2017)
The classic board game moves to the video age in this sequel.

Patriots Day (2017)
Mark Wahlberg plays the hero of the Boston Marathon bombing.

G.I. Joe: Retaliation (2013)
It certainly took me a while to see the latest installment in this franchise.

Life (2017)
A team of scientists find proof that life once existed on Mars, potentially dooming life on Earth in the process.

Snatched (2017)
Amy Schumer and Goldie Hawn go on vacation together and hijinks ensue.

People Like Us (2012)
When his father dies, Chris Pine learns that he had another family that needs some help.

The Layover (2017)
Two friends compete over a man when a hurricane turns their flight in to a road trip. Continue reading →

FB4: Week 47

After 2 good weeks, it was a big drop off as I started the Christmas vacation.  Things got off to a slow start, as usual, as I didn’t really do much on Sunday, ending with just over 2400 steps.  Monday saw a nice improvement, coming in over 7700 steps.  Tuesday was even better, with just over 8300 steps.  Wednesday, my last day of work for the year, finished with nearly 8600 steps.  Thursday used a trip to the mall to come in with a lowly 5700 steps.  Friday was ever worse, despite a trip to Target and Barnes & Noble for some last minute Christmas presents, finishing with 4200 steps.  Saturday was a repeat of Sunday, with 2500 steps as I again didn’t leave the house.

A second straight good week and my first back-to-back good weeks since Europe in September.  Things got off to a good start on Sunday, as I traveled between skating rinks in Massachusetts to see Angelina’s competition and ice show, finishing the day with over 7600 steps.  A cancelled flight on Monday meant no work, which left me with just over 4600 steps.  Tuesday used a couple of trips over to North Plaza to finish just 8 steps shy of 9600 steps. A holiday party at Fogo de Chao helped Wednesday come in with the holy total of 7777 steps.  Thursday combined some shopping with a night out to become the best day of the week with over 10,300 steps.  Friday was another down day, just surpassing 6100 steps.  Saturday used a night out to see Aquaman to bounce back to just over 8600 steps.

My fifth down week in a row, done in by lazy weekends.  Sunday finished off the Thanksgiving vacation, a mere step shy of 2400.  Monday was back to work, and an impressive improvement up to 7780.  Tuesday was another good day, coming in 10 steps shy of 7200.  Wednesday used two trips to North for coffee, not to mention lunch at the casino buffet, to finish over 8200 steps.  A lunch and learn on Thursday helped depress that day’s total to 5600.  Friday was the big winner of the week, coming in jest below 9400 steps thanks to another 2 coffee trips and a band concert for Danny.  Perpetual rainfall on Saturday made getting steps difficult, which is what I tell myself for only getting 4200 steps.

Another disappointing week, my 3rd in a row below target and 7th out of the last 8.  Things got off to a slow start on Sunday, where I barely cracked 1600 steps due to not leaving the house.  Monday was a nice bounce back, as I managed to get over 7100 steps, thanks to a Lunch and Learn in North Plaza.  Tuesday fell just 134 steps shy of my daily goal.  Wednesday was spent in training, so I barely managed to get 5300 steps.  Thursday was another close one, as I fell short by just 242 steps.  Friday was the big day of the week, thanks to two trips to North for coffee, coming in just below 9400 steps.  Saturday used a trip to a grocery store or two to finish at 4400 steps on the nose.

Yet another disappointing week, with only 2 days coming in above my daily goal.  Things got off to a slow start on Sunday, where a quick trip to the grocery store and a late birthday dinner came in just shy of 4000 steps.  Monday and Tuesday finished less than 60 steps apart well below my daily goal.  Wednesday had a nice bounce back, coming in at nearly 9400 steps, thanks to a trip to North Plaza to pick up some contractors and an after-work trip to the Glen.  Thursday combined another trip to North with an after-work trip to Woodfield to see Nikki Glaser with Val for nearly 8700 steps.  Friday fell just 195 steps shy of goal, with another trip to North in play.  Saturday was spent lying in bed catching up on tv shows, barely surpassing 2000 steps.

A hugely successful week, thanks to a couple of trips out of town.  Things got off to a slow start on Sunday, finishing just a step shy of 2650 steps.  Monday picked back up, coming in at nearly 8000 steps.  Tuesday I headed off to Boston, where dinner with Angelina and a Garbage concert put me just over 19,300 steps.  Wednesday was even better, thanks to a tour of Fenway Park prior to game 2 of the World Series and a trip to Harvard which put me over 23,300 steps.  Thursday was back to work, where I managed to just eke past 7000 steps.  Friday was more of the same, with only 17 steps less than the day before.  Saturday we traveled down to St. Louis for a band competition, where walking around town on my birthday left me at over 9700 steps.

Another disappointing week, thanks to another poor start to the week on Sunday, where a trip up to the Glen to see Venom with Jeff and John, followed by dinner at the Yardhouse, left me at just over 2700 steps.  Things rebounded on Monday, where I was able to finish over 8000 steps.  Tuesday was back down again, as I came nearly 300 steps shy of my daily goal.  Wednesday was the high point of the week, falling just short of 8100 steps.  Thursday improved on Tuesday’s step total by a single step, despite a return trip to the Glen for a goodbye dinner for John, again at the Yardhouse.  Friday was a disappointing day, with just over 5100 steps.  Saturday was another down day, despite heading in to work for a round of video games followed by the latest Halloween film and yet a third trip to Yardhouse for the week.

A disappointing week, as I headed back to work after my long trip to Europe.  Sunday was a good start to the week, garnering my highest step total with nearly 8700 steps.  Monday was my first day back at work and my first day sequestered up on the 6th floor for a special assignment.  I finished just shy of 6500 steps.  Tuesday was a nice bounce back, with 8600 steps thanks to a post-work trip to Wrigley Field to see the Cubs blow the Wild Card game against the Rockies, which bled in to Wednesday morning.  Thanks to that, I finished with nearly 8400 steps.  Thursday was another down day, coming in 4 steps higher than Monday’s total.  Friday was even worse, finishing just over 5000 steps.  Saturday was a bust, with just over 1800 steps.
