Fitbit V: Week 45

Yet another disappointing week, as I failed to make my goal for the 15th straight week.  Things got off to a slow start on Sunday, as I barely surpassed 3000 steps.  I headed back to work on Monday, but only managed to improve up to 6400 steps.  Tuesday finally got over goal, with nearly 8300 steps.  I worked from home on Wednesday, which led to the paltry total of 2800 steps.  Thursday was a nice bounce back day, finishing a whopping 48 steps over my goal.  I was off on Friday, so I ended up just over 2500 steps.  Saturday, we headed up to Ann Arbor to see Angelina and the BU Synchro team skate, so my 3000 steps can be attributed to spending most of the day in the car.

Fitbit V: Week 43

Yet another horrible week.  Sunday got things started with a bang, as I finished with a grand total of 2400 steps.  Monday rebounded a little bit, but PI Planning kept me at my desk most of the day, so I finished just over 6500 steps.  Tuesday was more of the same, with worse results as I came in just shy of 5500 steps.  Wednesday was the low point of the work week, with less than 4200 steps.  Thursday wrapped up PI Planning and improved a bit, up to 5000 steps.  Friday was the high point of the week, with a rousing total of 6700 steps.  Finally, the less said about Saturday’s 2100 steps, the better.

Fitbit V: Week 6

Yet another week where poor weekends bring down a decent work week.  Things got off to a slow start on Sunday, where I didn’t leave the house and finished just shy of 2400 steps.  Monday put a couple of coffee runs to good use to come in over 7800 steps.  Tuesday missed both the morning and afternoon coffee runs, which is why I finished with just over 6100 steps.  Wednesday bounced back, coming in a mere 31 steps over my daily goal.  Thursday was the highlight of the week, coming in over 11,400 steps thanks to an after-work trip to Woodfield Mall while killing time before seeing Captain Marvel.  Friday fell back down to just over 7000 steps.  Saturday was a complete bust, as I failed to crack 1300 steps while not leaving the house.

Fitbit V: Week 4

Another disappointing week, brought down by weekends of inactivity.  The week got off to a slow start on Sunday, finishing with just over 2600 steps.  Monday was a bit better, thanks to coffee trips at work, that got me up to 7600 steps.  Tuesday was about the same, finishing 47 steps over my daily goal.  Wednesday missed the afternoon coffee run, which left me just 18 steps shy of 7000.  Thursday was the big day of the week, coming in over 9000 steps.  Friday was nearly as good, coming in just 7 steps short of 8800 steps.  Saturday was another bust, finishing just over 2100 steps.

Fitbit V: Week 3

After the best week I’ve ever had (using either GlobalFit or Fitbit), we saw a bit of a slow down, with less than half of the previous week’s steps.  Things got off to a slow start on Sunday, as I arrived back home from Hawaii and spent the day resting up, finishing up with over 4100 steps.  Things picked up on Monday, as I went back to work and finished with over 7600 steps.  Tuesday was the high point of the week, using multiple trips to North to score nearly 9300 steps.  Wednesday was nearly the same, finishing just 26 steps below Tuesday’s total.  Thursday was Valentine’s Day, and a missing trip for coffee in the morning put me just over 1000 steps below goal.  Friday bounced back, coming in 29 steps over my daily goal of 7500 steps.  Poor weather kept me indoors on Saturday, for a bad end to the week with less than 2500 steps.

Fitbit V: Week 1

We kick off the 5th year of Fitbit use with a slow week, thanks to the return of the polar vortex, which brought record low temperatures. The week got off to a decent start on Sunday, where I combined snow blowing with a trip out to celebrate mom’s birthday to finish just over 4900 steps.  An overnight snowstorm kept me home from work on Monday, where another round of snow blowing put me up over 5500 steps.  Tuesday was back to work, where I was able to put together over 8500 steps, a full 1000 over my new daily goal of 7500.  The polar vortex returned on Wednesday, keeping me home with a high temperature of -14, resulting in a poor total of just over 2800 steps. Thursday was another day trapped indoors, so again I was just over 2800 steps. Friday was a good bounce back day, both weather-wise and step-wise. Reaching into the low 20s, I was able to go to work and finish just shy of 9900 steps. Most of Saturday was spent in an airplane; but between the airport and an early evening stroll down Waikiki Beach, I managed to just pass my daily goal with over 7600 steps.

We finish off year four of the Fitbit with a down week, thanks in part to the chilly weather.  Things got off to a slow start on Sunday, where not leaving the house left me 5 steps shy of 2800 steps.  Heading back to work on Monday, and taking my coffee trips to North Plaza, got me 51 steps away from 9000 steps.  An expected snow storm on Tuesday led to me leaving early, getting only one trip to North in, but still coming in just over 7000 steps.  Wednesday wasn’t so lucky, both from the leaving early and step perspective, as I finished with just over 6100 steps.  Thursday was a nice bounce back, as I parlayed the work day into over 9800 steps.  Friday was another early exit, which left me 1 step over 6600.  Saturday was again spent inside all day, so I finished with just over 2200 steps.

A successful week, with 6 out of the 7 days coming in over goal.  Things got off to a decent start on Sunday, when a snowblowing session combined with a trip to the grocery store put me a whole 18 steps over goal.  Monday saw a slight improvement, coming in 5 steps shy of 8000, thanks to one or two trips to North for coffee.  Tuesday was another decent day, with over 7100 steps, with more of the same at work.  Wednesday finished just shy of 8300 steps, thanks to a meeting in D building.  Thursday came in 20 steps below 9000, which was the highest total of the week.  Friday used another meeting in North, followed by an early trip home to beat the snow, to come in just over 7000 steps.  Saturday parlayed some snowblowing into just over 5100 steps.

A good work week done in by a poor weekend.  Things got off to a slow start on Sunday, where a day inside left me shy of 2400 steps.  Things picked up on Monday, where I came in over 8500 steps.  Tuesday was more of the same, where I finished 12 steps over 8000.  Wednesday was another good day, with coffee trips putting me over 8100 steps.  Thursday was the highlight of the week, with over 9500 steps.  Friday finished with over 7200 steps, thanks to a post-work dinner to see Angelina back off to college.  Saturday fell off a cliff, with only 1700 steps.

2018: The Year In Travel

As I arrive home from California, I thought it would be nice to look back at the many trips I took last year.  Things got started in March, when I headed out to Las Vegas for the IBM Think conference.  Along the way, I took in a show, Absinthe, at Caesar’s Palace, a Barenaked Ladies concert at Mandalay Bay, and a show by The Chainsmokers at MGM Grand, where I was staying.

Following the conference, I took a detour to Phoenix for a long weekend, where I took in some Cactus League action at Camelback Ranch and Peoria Sports Complex, seeing the White Sox, Cubs, and Mariners (twice!).  I also enjoyed a trip to the slot canyons and Horseshoe Bend in Page, followed by a quick trip to the Grand Canyon.

About a month later, I took a short weekend trip to New York.  Danny, Michael, and I flew to New York on a Friday night, where we met up with Angelina and had dinner with the family she was nannying for.  Saturday was a glorious spring day, spent sight seeing at the 9/11 Memorial & Museum, the Museum of the City of New York, Central Park, the Guggenheim museum, and the Empire State Building.  Sunday was spent at the Lyric Theatre, watching both parts of Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, before heading home early Monday morning.

My next trip came at the end of July, as Val and I headed down to Roanoke, Virginia, to celebrate Jeff’s 50th birthday.  After a day of “work”, the highlight of the trip was Saturday’s hike up Catawba Mountain to McAfee Knob.  Sunday was spent recovering, before heading home.

I spent most of September in Europe, starting with a week in Belfast, Northern Ireland.  Aside from work, there was a trip to Castle Ward in to look at Game of Thrones filming locations, a hockey game featuring the Belfast Giants, a trip to the Ulster American Folk Park and a nip across the border to the wonderful town of Muff in Ireland, and a Black Cab tour of locations in Belfast related to the Troubles.
