Name: Larry Thomas

Rank: 312

Position: P

Years With White Sox: 1995-1997

Larry Thomas was the second round draft pick of the White Sox in 1991.  He worked his way through the system, eventually making his major league debut on August 11, 1995, pitching an inning of scoreless relief in the White Sox 13-5 victory over the A’s.  He finished the year with a 1.32 ERA in 17 games.

He spent all of 1996 in the big leagues, appearing in 57 games and compiling a 3.23 ERA.  Things went a bit off the rails in 1997, where he gave up 3 runs in only 3 1/3 innings pitched before being sent back to Triple A, thus ending the major league portion of his career.

Following the 1997 season, Thomas was shipped to the Rangers along with Al Levine in exchange for Benji Gil.

Name: Esteban Beltre

Rank: 313

Position: SS

Years With White Sox: 1991-1992

Esteban Beltre joined the White Sox organization on May 23, 1991 after being acquired from the Brewers in exchange for John Cangelosi.  He made his major league debut that September against the Royals in an 8-0 loss.

Beltre got an extended look in 1992 when Ozzie Guillen blew out his knee in April, starting 32 games for the South Siders.  His output left a little to be desired, however, and he spent the 1993 season back in Triple A.  His time with the White Sox came to an end during spring training in 1994, when he was traded to the Rangers for Scott Eyre.

Beltre’s numbers in a White Sox uniform were:

Cashing In On A Sale

MLB: Minnesota Twins at Chicago White Sox

Rick Hahn made his biggest splash since becoming general manager in October by signing Chris Sale to a five year extension worth $32.5 million, plus 2 additional club options that could boost the contract up to $60 million.  Sale, the 23 year old who went 17-8 with a 3.05 ERA and made the All-Star Game in his first season as a starter, gets a lifetime of security and the White Sox get a potential ace starter at below market value through his arbitration years and beyond.

Hahn’s other moves in his first off-season have been mostly low key, resigning Jake Peavy and Dewayne Wise, picking up the option on Gavin Floyd, and signing Jeff Keppinger to a 3 year deal.  The biggest newsmaker may have been the move he didn’t make, allowing A.J. Pierzynski to leave as a free agent and sign with the Rangers.  With this move, he starts to put his own stamp on the franchise.

Position: P

Years With White Sox: 1992-1993

Terry Leach joined the White Sox at the end of spring training in 1992 after being released by the Expos and became one of the most effective members of the bullpen over the course of the 1992 season.  He posted a 1.95 ERA in 51 games as the White Sox finished 10 games behind the A’s.  The next year, the 39-year old Leach battled elbow issues and was limited to 14 games for the eventual Western Division champions.  He pitched in the final game of his 11 year major league career on June 23 against the Rangers.

The following spring, Leach was released during spring training, and he retired in 1995 after a failed comeback attempt with the Tigers.

Aaron Myette (White Sox) 2

Name: Aaron Myette

Years With White Sox: 1999-2000

Aaron Myette was the White Sox first round pick in the 1997 draft.  He moved quickly through the White Sox system and made his major league debut in September of 1999, appearing in 4 games with the big league club.  He spent most of the 2000 season in Charlotte, making only 2 appearances with the White Sox.

Following the 2000 season, he was packaged with Brian Schmack in a trade with the Rangers for the immortal Royce Clayton.

#334 – Chris Stewart

Chris Stewart joined the White Sox organization in 2001 after being selected in the 12th round of the draft.  He made his major league debut with the Sox on September 6, 2006 against the Red Sox and appeared in 6 games as the White Sox failed to defend their AL Central crown.  In January, Stewart was traded to the Rangers for a minor league pitcher.

And Then There Was One

A.J. Pierzynski’s White Sox career officially came to an end Thursday when the free agent catcher signed a contract with the Texas Rangers, leaving Paul Konerko as the last remaining member of the 2005 World Series champions to play for the South Siders and the White Sox without their most popular backstop since Carlton Fisk.

Pierzynski signed with the White Sox on January 6, 2005 following a year with the Giants that called his professionalism into question.  He rewarded the White Sox organization with 8 seasons of stability behind the plate the included 1 All-Star selection, 2 playoff appearances, and, of course, the 2005 World Series championship.  Over those 8 seasons, Pierzynski was involved in many key moments that endeared him to the White Sox faithful, including:

The walk-off home run, and resulting bat flip pictured to the left, against the Dodgers in 2005.

The two home runs in a thrashing of the Red Sox in game one of the 2005 ALDS, the first White Sox home postseason victory since 1959.

The controversial dropped third strike that led to a White Sox victory in game two of the 2005 ALCS against the Angels.

The 2006 brawl against the Cubs where Michael Barrett sucker-punched him after Pierzynski enthusiastically scored a run against the crosstown rivals.

Hanging on to the throw from Ken Griffey Jr. to preserve the shutout in the 2008 tie-breaker game that pushed the White Sox into the playoffs over the Twins.

Being behind the plate for Mark Buehrle’s no-hitter in 2007 and Philip Humber’s perfect game in 2012.

In games I have attended, Pierzynski ranks 2nd in games, doubles, at bats, runs, and hits, third in RBIs, sixth in triples, and seventh in home runs.

Pierzynski’s numbers in a White Sox uniform, both for games I attended and overall, were:

#338 – Fred Manrique

Name: Fred Manrique

Rank: 338

Position: 2B

Years With White Sox: 1987-1989

Fred Manrique was acquired prior to the 1987 from the Cardinals in exchange for Bill Dawley.  After getting a smattering of playing time during his previous trips to the show, Manrique became a serviceable second baseman for the 1987 South Siders.  In 1988, Manrique got even more playing time, but his production fell off somewhat from the previous year.  In 1989, Manrique bounced back after starting the year in the minors, just in time to be included in the trade that sent Harold Baines to the Rangers in exchange for Wilson Alvarez, Scott Fletcher, and Sammy Sosa.

Manrique’s numbers in a White Sox uniform, both for games I attended and overall, were:

Another One Bites The Dust

For the second time in less than 4 months, the Twitterverse has exploded with confirmed reports of a confirmed trade involving the Cubs, only to have it fall apart within hours of being confirmed.  The first, back at the trade deadline at the end of July, involved Ryan Dempster being sent to the Braves for one of their top pitching prospects.  Word broke on Twitter after someone in the Braves front office leaked the news, but before Dempster had been told of the trade.  He got angry and ultimately witheld his approval despite previously agreeing to waive his no-trade rights if a deal was made to the Braves.

The second occurence went down Friday night, when Twitter exploded with reports that Carlos Marmol was being traded to the Angels for Dan Haren.  This time, the source was Marmol himself, who had waived his no-trade rights and was giving interviews in his native Dominican Republic about the trade.  The only problem was that the trade was not completed and was eventually scrapped, with the Angels ending up not picking up Haren’s option, making him a free agent and leaving Marmol as a member of the Cubs.

In both cases, the Cubs were not to blame for the trade details leaking before the deal was complete, but they did still come out of both situations with a little egg on their face.  They eventually ended up trading Dempster to the Rangers, but got a worse return than what they were going to get from the Braves.  Time will tell if they will eventually end up moving Marmol this winter and if they can get anything close to Haren.
