Royals All Time Leaders – Through 2025

To paraphrase from a famous movie, the one constant through all the years has been baseball.  With less than two weeks until the start of the 2025 season, we continue our look at the all-time leaders in both offensive and defensive categories for all 30 teams. Today, we take a deeper dive into the Kansas City Royals.

The Royals began life in 1969, joining the American League following the abandonment of the Kansas City market by the A’s following the 1967 season.  I’ve seen 277 players wearing the Royal blue in the 68 games I’ve seen them play, first in 1985 at old Comiskey Park where Willie Wilson took a throw to second base off the noggin, to last June, where Kyle Teel made his major league debut and picked up his first major league hit.

Royals All Time Leaders – Through 2019

royalsWith baseball now officially on its way back after the corona virus, I thought it would be an interesting time to look back at the all time leaders in both offensive and defensive categories for all 30 teams. We continue today with the Kansas City Royals.

The Royals began life in 1969, joining the American League following the abandonment of the Kansas City market by the A’s following the 1967 season.  I’ve seen them play 55 times, first in 1985 at old Comiskey Park where Willie Wilson took a throw to second base off the noggin, to last April, where I saw them in an early season series at Guaranteed Rate Field.

The Decade In Baseball – Batting Leaders

The 2010s have drawn to a close and its time to take a look back at the previous decade.  Today, we are continuing with baseball, specifically the offensive leaders in the 385 games I attended between 2010 and 2019.

There is not a huge diversity of names on this list.  Nearly all played for the White Sox in the early part of the decade, when they were supposedly trying to win.

#319 – Jhonny Nunez

Year With White Sox: 2009

Jhonny Nunez joined the White Sox on November 13, 2008 along with Wilson Betemit and Jeff Marquez in the deal that sent Nick Swisher packing to the Yankees.  Ironically enough, he made his major league debut the following summer against the Yankees, getting the only batter he faced, Johnny Damon, to ground out.  Unfortunately, his successes were few and far between, as he finished the season with only 7 appearances and an ERA over 9.  He spent 2010 and 2011 bouncing between Double A Birmingham and Triple A Charlotte, but was unable to recapture his earlier successes.  Following the 2011 season, he left the White Sox organization as a free agent, but has still never made it back to the big leagues.

#344 – Jeff Marquez

Year With White Sox: 2010

Jeff Marquez was acquired by the White Sox after the 2008 season along with Wilson Betemit and Jhonny Nunez in the deal the sent Nick Swisher packing to the Yankees.  He made his major league debut on July 9, 2010 against the Royals, giving up 2 runs in 1 inning of work.  After that game, he was quickly returned to the minor leagues, and thus ended his White Sox career.  In June of 2011, he was claimed off of waivers by the Yankees.

#378 – Wilson Betemit

Name: Wilson Betemit

Rank: 378

Position: 3B

Year With White Sox: 2009

Wilson Betemit was acquired by the White Sox as part of the deal that sent Nick Swisher out of town.  His time on the South Side did not last long, as he garnered a whole 50 ABs before being DFA’d on June 4th to make room on the roster for rookie Gordon Beckham.  He spent the remainder of the year at AAA Charlotte before being granted free agency at the end of the season.

Of course, since then, he has saved his best for games against the White Sox, becoming a perpetual thorn in their side over the past 3 seasons.
