Post Mortem – Rizzoli And Isles

Last September, at the conclusion of its seventh season, Rizzoli & Isles called it quits.  Debuting in July of 2010 on TNT, the show aired 105 episodes before wrapping up as one of the network’s most successful dramas.

Starring Angie Harmon and Sasha Alexander, the show followed the exploits of a Boston police detective and her best friend, the chief medical examiner for the state.  Together, they fought crime.  The show weathered some tragedy in its fourth season when co-star Lee Thompson Young committed suicide.

While nobody would ever confuse Rizzoli & Isles with the best television has to offer, it was an entertaining way to pass the time, especially when it aired over the summer, with little competition.

Post Mortem – Falling Skies

FALLING SKIESFalling Skies, TNT’s science fiction series about an alien invasion of Earth meant as an allegory for the Revolutionary War, concluded last summer after 5 seasons.  Starring Noah Wylie as a history professor who becomes second-in-command for the 2nd Massachusetts militia, the show followed his family as they fought back against the aliens that attacked the Earth, eventually becoming allies with a second group of aliens to fight back against the first.

The show ended with the humans eventually winning out over their new alien overlords, but had turned into a mess of plots and characters that made it nearly impossible to follow.  Wylie has been a favorite dating back to his ER days and was part of what initially drew me in, but he deserved better than this.

Post Mortem – Perception

perceptionBack in November, TNT announced that it would not be ordering a fourth season of Perception, with the five remaining episodes from season three still planned to air in February.  With February come and gone, so is Perception, the Eric McCormack and Rachael Leigh Cook vehicle that premiered in 2012.

McCormack starred as a schizophrenic neuropsychiatrist who teamed up with a former student, played by Cook, who is now an FBI agent.  Together, they solved crimes, usually thanks to the voices in McCormack’s head.  The show was never great, but it was nice to see Cook, most famous to my generation for her anti-drug PSA, get some regular work.

Post Mortem – Franklin & Bash

franklin-bashAfter 4 seasons, TNT decided to cut bait on Franklin & Bash, the buddy lawyer dramedy starring Mark-Paul Gosselaar and Breckin Meyer.  I bailed on the show this summer during its 4th season, when it came back without co-stars Dana Davis and Kumail Nanjiani, and seemed to have lost any creative spark.  At it’s best, it was never must-see TV, and this past season was far from its best.

Post Mortem – Whitney

618_ustv_whitneyWhitney was one of two network television shows created by Whitney Cummings to premiere during the fall of 2011.  It also was the one that she also starred in, and was the one that got cancelled after 2 less than stellar seasons.

This show was a surprise renewal after its first season and, after a retooling that dropped one character and turned another one from a cop to a bar owner, struggled through a second season before being put out of its misery.  The one bright side, at least to my mind, was Rhea Seehorn, who has also appeared on TNT’s Franklin & Bash.  Besides her, the show was mostly a mess and it certainly will not be missed.
