Sacred Hoops: Spiritual Lessons Of A Hardwood Warrior - Phil Jackson and Hugh Delehanty

Following the disappointing end to the 1995 playoffs, Phil Jackson, with an assist from Hugh Delehanty, put pen to paper to chronicle his journey from a devout Christian child in Montana to a practicing Zen-Buddhist coaching the most successful team in the NBA, with a few stops and pratfalls along the way.

Jackson chronicles the lessons he has learned over the years, and how he had applied them in leading the Bulls to 3 straight championships.  Those lessons extend beyond basketball, and Jackson shows how applying them to his life has led him to both professional and personal highs.

The best part of reading this book now, some 17 years after its initial publication, is revisiting a prolific time in Chicago sports.  Hearing new tales about the heroes of my youth: how Michael Jordan decided to put team success ahead of his personal agenda, how Scottie Pippen and Horace Grant grew up together to finally become champions, how Bill Cartwright’s locker room leadership helped steady what could have been a sinking ship, and more.

Who’s Next?

2004 – 2011

Rumored for nearly 2 years, the Ozzie Guillen era for the White Sox came to an end last week, as Guillen was released from his contract and allowed to take his talents to South Beach.  Guillen wrapped up his tenure as the third winningest manager in team history, in terms of victories, and the only manager to lead the team to multiple post-season appearances.  That said. his act had started to grow stale and it became apparent that a change was needed in the clubhouse, something to shake up the underachieving bunch that has been run out for the past two years.  So, as Guillen prepares to lead the re-christened Miami Marlins into their new stadium next season, who will take his place on the end of the White Sox bench?

2010 Review – Movies

A likely part of the reason I only made it through 8 books last year was the 119 movies I saw, making it the 5th most prolific year of my life.

Amy Adams, Mila Kunis, and Nicolas Cage each starred in 4 films I saw, tying for the yearly lead.  Bruce Willis starred in 2, giving him the all time lead with 27.

For fun, here’s a quick review of the films and what recollection, if any, I have of them.  They are listed in the order I saw them.
