Beverly Hills, 9021Oh No

After a years long battle with cancer, Shannen Doherty, the former Beverly Hills 90210 and Charmed star, passed away yesterday at the age of 53.  Doherty was first diagnosed with breast cancer in 2015 and suffered a recurrence in 2019, which had spread to her brain and her bones.

Doherty rose to fame starring as Brenda Walsh on the first four seasons of Beverly Hills 90210.  She would then later star as Prue Halliwell, the oldest sister on Charmed.  She left that gig after the third season.  On the big screen, she was known for her supporting roles in Heathers and Mallrats.

Doherty is now the second cast member from the 90s teen soap to prematurely shuttle off this mortal coil.  Luke Perry, who played Doherty’s dangerous boyfriend Dylan McKay, suffered a massive stroke in 2019, dying a week later after being taken off life support.  He was 52.

You Ought To Be In (14) Pictures

Movie_Reel_22

Many years ago, using the weekly TV guide that came with the Sunday Chicago Tribune, I started keeping track of all of the movies I had seen over the course of my lifetime.  The guide would list the two main stars for each movie, and that is a tradition that I’ve carried on in my database ever since.  So, given those guidelines, it is time to look at all of the actors that have starred in at least 10 films that I have seen, as of May 30th.

Today, we look at the 6 actors that have starred in 14 movies that I have seen.

Samuel L. Jackson

20 years ago, I first made the acquaintance of Samuel L. Jackson in 2 polar opposite films, Pulp Fiction and National Lampoon’s Loaded Weapon 1.  Aside from 1994, I also saw 2 Jackson films in both 2000 and 2006.  The last starring role of Jackson’s I took in was in 2010, when I saw Lakeview Terrace.

Scarlett Johansson

I was first introduced to Scarlett Johansson in 2001 when I saw the comic-book adaptation Ghost World.  Starting in 2004, there was a 6 year run where I saw 11 of the 14 films that make up this total, including 5 in 2006 alone.  My most recent experience with her was earlier this spring, when I headed to the Arclight Theater in Pasadena to take in Captain America: Winter Soldier during my California adventure.

Winona Ryder

I first became aware of Winona Ryder in the hit film Beetlejuice, but her first starring role that I saw came in 1990, when I saw the dark comedy Heathers.  My biggest Ryder year was 2000, when I saw 2 of her films.  The last films of her’s that I saw was 2002’s Mr. Deeds, which I finally got around to watching in 2011.

Post Mortem – Mind Games

mindgames-676x250I’ve been a fan of Christian Slater dating back to 1988’s Heathers.  Unlike most, I have enjoyed his recent forays into television, including My Own Worst Enemy, The Forgotten, and Breaking In.  I’m also a fan of Steve Zahn.  That said, putting the two together in this vehicle so the two could shout at each other did not result in a winning formula, which is why ABC pulled Mind Games off the air after only 5 episodes.

Mind Games was the tale of a bi-polar human psychology genius teaming up with his ex-con brother to start a new business where they use the “real science of human motivation and manipulation” to solve the problems of their clients.  Not a great concept, but with two likeable stars, alongside reliable bit players like Megalyn Echikunwoke and Jaime Ray Newman, the show earned a spot in my rotation when it premiered in February.  Unfortunately, with all of the screaming, things never really came together.
