cws-chiTwo months back, the 2024 Crosstown Cup series kicked off at Wrigley Field with the Cubs sweeping the two-game set as part of the first record-setting losing streak the White Sox posted this season.  With round two scheduled to get under way tonight across town at Guaranteed Rate Field, we look at the pitching leaders from the 90 contests I’ve attended in the annual match-up between the White Sox and the Cubs, starting with:

Your Latest Crosstown Batting Leaders

The battle for the 2024 Crosstown Cup kicks off tonight at Wrigley Field, with the Cubs looking to take retain possession of the cup after winning it back last year.  The White Sox currently hold a slight edge in the overall series, going 74-68 over the past 27 years.  Let’s take a look at the offensive leaders for the now 89 (out of 142) crosstown games I have attended since the start of interleague play in 1997:

Crosstown Batting Leaders Revisited

cws-chiThe first round of the 2019 Crosstown Cup kicks off today at Wrigley Field, with the Cubs looking to take home the cup for the third straight year and the fourth time overall since its introduction in 2010.  Let’s take a look at the offensive leaders for the 71 (out of 118) crosstown games I have attended since the start of interleague play in 1997:

FB2: Week 26

FB2_Week26Another week got off to a slow start, despite a trip down to US Cellular Field for exciting White Sox baseball.  Monday was another disappointment, not ever cracking 5000 steps.  Tuesday saw a big increase, nearly totaling 9000 steps, thanks to game 2 of the Crosstown Cup.  Wednesday was another good day, due to a post-work trip to the Glen with Hayley to have dinner and see Star Trek Beyond.  Thursday and Friday were down days once again, with the week saved by Saturday’s total of over 13,000 steps thanks to a trip in to the city for Lollapalooza with Hayley and Val.

Total steps: 47,611

Daily average: 6801.6

Fitbit Week 28

Week28_FBDespite a slow start, the week ended up being pretty successful.  Sadly, my streak of 5500 step days was snapped on Sunday.  I bounced back on Monday, followed by a huge day on Tuesday.  After being denied a donut due to my “unfavorable” biometric numbers, I came home from work and took a long walk around the neighborhood, which gave me my 13th highest total overall and my best day since July 6th.

The rest of the work week was pretty even, avoiding the typical Wednesday through Friday drop-off I usually see.  Saturday was a nice combination of a shorter walk around the neighborhood combined with the south side edition of the Crosstown Cup.

Total steps: 55,632

Daily average: 7947.4

Fitbit Week 24

Week24_FBAnother tremendous week, my third in a row over 60,000 steps.  My streak of 6000 step days came to an end on Sunday, but my streak of days over goal stretched to 28 days.  Sunday’s slightly disappointing total came about thanks to a trip to Wrigley Field for the final game of the first Crosstown Cup installment.  Monday and Tuesday, with no baseball thanks to the All Star break, broke the 10,000 step barrier.  Wednesday and Thursday were normal work days, with afternoon coffee runs helping me surpass my daily goal.  Friday started off with a morning walk, followed by a trip to US Cellular Field for a Jose Abreu blanket, ending with nearly 13,000 steps.  Saturday featured a return trip to the Cell.

Total steps: 61,363

Daily average: 8766.1

Honoring 2 Legends

minosouniform.0With the annual renewal of hostilities between the Cubs and the White Sox set to get underway this afternoon at Wrigley Field, the two teams announced earlier this week that they would be honoring both Ernie Banks and Minnie Minoso during the interleague series, both this weekend at Wrigley Field and in August at US Cellular Field.

Sunday, the Cubs will wear throwback home uniforms from 1958, the year of Banks’ first MVP award, and every Cub will take the field wearing number 14.  The White Sox will wear corresponding road uniforms from the same era.

Next month, the tables will be turned.  On Friday, August 14, the White Sox will don their home whites from the 1950s, all with Minoso’s number 9, while the Cubs will don the road grays of the time.

There has been some fan clamoring for the trophy awarded to the winners of the season series, the Crosstown Cup, to bear the name of both Banks and Minoso.  The cup was introduced back in 2010, when some marketing genius introduced the trophy as the BP Crosstown Cup.  The title sponsor has since dropped away, but the cup, for some reason, remains.  As long as it is going to exist, it may as well honor two of the best to wear the respective uniforms.
