iTunes Top 200 Artists: #21-29

Music.  It is a powerful thing that brings people together, creates memories, and evokes emotions.  It is the universal language that speaks to the soul.  It forms the soundtrack of our lives.

It has now been five years since we last counted down the Top 200 artists in my iTunes library, featuring the songs I have listened to the most since 2007.  It is time to do so again, seeing which performers still resonate and if any newer ones have joined the fray.  So, without further ado, here are my most listened to artists, based on number of plays as of January 1, 2026.

We continue today with the next batch of ten artists, half of which I have seen perform live at least once.

#29: Guns N’ Roses

Axl Rose and his sometimes friends add 96 new listens to the now 21 songs in my collection, enabling them to remain at the same position in the rankings.

#29: Avril Lavigne
iTunes stats: 360 plays

The eight-time Grammy nominee, who somehow has 25 tracks that I’ve listened to in my collection, added just 63 new plays, which moved her down two spots on the charts.

#28: The Monkees
iTunes stats: 371 plays
Previous ranking: #28

The made-for-TV band, who are down to two living members following the death of Peter Tork in 2019, had a 33% increase in their listens, keeping them even in the rankings.

#27: Veruca Salt
iTunes stats: 373 plays
Previous ranking: #26

The girls from Chicago, who I saw live in Champaign back in the day, used fourteen songs to increase their plays by 73, allowing them to drop just a single slot.

2025: The Year In Live Performances

After a slow 2024, things rebounded a bit in 2025 for live performances, including a comedy show, a play, a live podcast taping, and a concert.

I kicked off the year on Valentine’s Day, heading downtown to the Chicago Theatre to see comedian Taylor Tomlinson’s Save Me tour.  I became a fan thanks to her gig hosting the revived @fter Midnight on CBS and was thrilled to see her perform live, my first comedy show since 2023.  After two opening acts, Tomlinson came out and commanded the stage.  Once she wrapped things up, she came back out with her openers and did a round of crowd confessions, where they riffed on stories the crowd had texted in earlier.  During the show, a snowstorm started to roll through town, which made getting out of the theater and getting home dry and in one piece a bit tricky.

In March, I made my first visit to Texas in 20 years to take Michael to see the stage version of Clue. He was sick when Angelina, Danny, and I saw it in Chicago back in 2022, so the experience was a new one for him.  We travelled from his dorm in Dallas to the Bass Performance Hall in Fort Worth on a Saturday afternoon to enjoy the show based on the movie.  Sadly, that was pretty much the total of our interaction, as he kept mostly to his dorm room the remainder of our visit.

I returned to the Chicago Theatre in September for a live taping of the Inside Jeopardy! podcast.  Following the podcast taping, featuring Celebrity Jeopardy! champion W. Kamu Bell and Jeopardy Masters finalist Juveria Zaheer, Ken Jennings came out to play an interactive round of Jeopardy with the audience.  Sadly, a limited signal prevented me from playing along on my phone, but it was still a good time.

My final live performance of the year came in late September when Garbage performed at the Salt Shed, which was my first ever visit to the new-ish venue.  Proclaiming that this was likely to be their final headlining tour of North America, the group put on a great performance that left the audience begging for more.  They have some European dates on the schedule for this summer that I would absolutely attend had I won the billion-dollar Powerball, but this might have been the end of the road for me seeing my favorite band.

Fitbit XI – Week 34

An off week that barley managed to extend my 30,000-step week streak to 18 weeks.  Things got off to a strong start on Sunday as I needed just 7 additional steps to reach 4900.  Going back to work after a week’s vacation on Monday saw me come within 39 steps of 4200.  A small decrease on Tuesday left me 40 steps away from 4000.  Another small drop on Wednesday needed 26 steps to get to 3900.  Thursday was even worse, finishing with 3800 steps.  A trip downtown for dinner and to see a Jeopardy! show at the Chicago Theatre pushed me up to 6400 steps on Friday.  The week’s low point came on Saturday, ending the week with 3300 steps.

Total steps: 30,497

Daily average: 4356.7

Post Mortem – After Midnight

@fter Midnight, the revamped version of the old Comedy Central show @midnight which has spent two seasons following Stephen Colbert on CBS, will be wrapping up its run after host Taylor Tomlinson announced she would be leaving the program.  CBS had previously renewed the show for a third season but decided to pull the plug rather than try and start over with a new host.  There will be no replacement program, and CBS will return this timeslot to its affiliates.

Tomlinson, who has been touring with her latest stand-up show while hosting the show during this second season, will be returning to stand-up full time, saying in an Instagram post, “Though it was an extremely tough decision, I knew I had to return to my first passion and return to stand-up touring full-time.”

I was unaware of Tomlinson prior to the show, but, having been a fan of the previous incarnation, I was excited to see the show come back.  Over the past two years, I’ve become a fan and saw her standup live at the Chicago Theatre this past February.  I look forward to more good comedy in the years to come.

Fitbit XI – Week 4

A second straight week over 30,000 steps thanks in part to the weather and my first night out of 2025.  Sunday got the week off to a decent start, finishing just 12 steps shy of 4200.  Monday was in the same ballpark, coming 2 steps short of 4100.  Tuesday finished with exactly 50 fewer steps before Wednesday fell to 3700 steps thanks to a late afternoon snowstorm.  Pulling out the snowblower on Thursday pushed me back up, needing 26 additional steps to reach 5500.  A trip downtown on Friday to see Taylor Tomlinson at the Chicago Theatre left me 3 steps away from 7300.  A lackadaisical Saturday ended the week on a down note, earning just 2900 steps.

Total steps: 31,728

Daily average: 4532.6

2023: The Year In Live Performances

2023 was a slow year for live performances.  I only managed to get to one concert and one exhibition, both since the start of November.

On April 10, 1994, while watching 120 Minutes in my dorm room late on a Sunday night, I saw the video for Liz Phair’s Never Said, the lead single from her debut album, for the first time.  Nearly 30 years later, she came to the Chicago Theatre for the 30th anniversary of the release of Exile in Guyville.

This was my third time seeing Phair perform live, and the first in nearly twenty years.  She’s become a more confident performer, finally getting over the stage fright that plagued her early career.  She performed every song from the album, many I haven’t heard in years, if not decades.  Overall, a good experience.  Here’s hoping to more live music in 2024.

In the waning days of 2023, the family headed into the city to the Exhibition Hub Art Center for Disney 100: The Exhibition.  To celebrate the 100th anniversary of what would become the Walt Disney Company, the company has opened its archives, showcasing more than 250 artifacts and works of art, costumes and props, and incredible memorabilia.  Unfortunately, Michael was unable to join us, but the rest of us took a trip through Disney’s past, including more recent additions like the Star Wars and Marvel universes.

A Year Of Activities

For the first time in my 49 years, I managed to attend a ticketed event in every month of 2023. Let’s take a look back and see what I had going on this year.
The first quarter of the year is typically the quietest for me.  This year started strong, with a trip to Florida for the Citrus Bowl on January 2nd.  College basketball ruled the day in February, with my first trip to Bloomington, Indiana coming that first weekend.  The Big Ten Tournament rolled into the United Center in March, making me three for three to start out the year.

The second quarter brings the start of baseball season, which easily knocked out the next three months.  I added 19 games over these three months, which included the Orioles against the White Sox at Guaranteed Rate Field in April, the Mets battling the Cubs at Wrigley Field in May, and my first-ever visit to T-Mobile Park in June to see the White Sox play the Mariners. Fitbit IX – Week 43

After two weeks back on the right side of the 30,000-step plateau, things fell off a bit this week.  Things got off to a slow start on Sunday, finishing with just 3900 steps.  Monday saw a small increase, going up to 4200 steps.  Things fell off considerably on Tuesday, as I needed 30 steps short of 2800.  A big increase on Wednesday left me 9 steps away from 4400.  Another drop on Thursday put me back to 3200 steps.  Friday was a little better, going back up to 4300 steps.  A haircut and a trip to the Chicago Theatre to see Liz Phair led to the best day of the week on Saturday, earning 5500 steps.

Total steps: 28,431

Daily average: 4061.6

2022: The Year In Live Performances

During 2022, I managed to get out three different times, taking in my first post-pandemic concert and play and my second comedy show.

In June, I attended my first concert since 2019.  Garbage was opening for Tears for Fears at the Hollywood Casino Amphitheatre and I made a last-minute decision to attend.  I hadn’t been to this particular venue since 2017, despite it being the closest to my house.  After a nice set from Garbage, I stuck around for the first part of Tears for Fears’ set.  The songs I knew from them were evenly split between the beginning of the show and the end, so I stayed for the first five songs they performed, hearing Everybody Wants to Rule the World and Sowing the Seeds of Love before leaving.  Without the crowds, I was able to get from my seat to my house in about a half hour.

For my birthday, I received tickets to the stage version of Clue.  In November, the night before Thanksgiving, Angelina, Danny, and I headed into the city for what was my first trip to the theater since 2018’s trip to Broadway.  The production of Clue is based on the movie, which is one of my favorites.  A good time was had by all.

To wrap up the year, I headed to the Chicago Theatre to see John Oliver on New Year’s Eve.  It was the perfect New Year’s Eve for someone my age, with the show starting around 7:30, wrapping up by 9:00, and allowing me to drive home and be in the house by 10:00.

Travelling The 50 States – Illinois

Over my 47 years, I’ve done my fair share of travelling across these United States.  I thought it would be an interesting experiment go look back at those trips to each of the 31 states I have visited (62% isn’t bad, is it?) and see if, and when, I may be returning.  Working in alphabetical order, we continue today with the 21st state to be added to the Union: Illinois.

How do you track how often you’ve been in the state you’ve lived in your entire life, save for your time away at college?  My first “visit” came nearly 48 years ago on the day I was born at Mercy Hospital on the south side of Chicago.

I’ve managed to do 18 of the Bicentennial Bucket List: 200 Things To Do In Illinois, published by the Chicago Tribune in 2018 to celebrate the best the state has to offer in history, food, architecture, culture, sports, nature, drink, and oddities.  Among the places I visited were Water Tower, Morton Arboretum, Route 66, United Center, Skydeck at Willis Tower, the former Arlington International Racecourse, Rialto Square Theatre, Lake Michigan, The Second City, Chicago Sports Museum, and the Superman statue in downstate Metropolis.

I’ve seen baseball games at Wrigley Field, Comiskey Park, and Guaranteed Rate Field.  I’ve seen football games at Soldier Field, Memorial Stadium, Ryan Field, and Wrigley Field.  I’ve seen basketball games at the United Center, Welsh-Ryan Arena, State Farm Center, and Allstate Arena.  I’ve seen hockey games at the United Center.  I’ve seen both the White Sox and the Cubs win the World Series.  I’ve seen the Bears win a Super Bowl.  I’ve seen the Bulls win 6 NBA Championships.  I’ve even seen the Blackhawks win a Stanley Cup or two.
