2013: The Year In Movies

2013 was again an off year in movie watching for me.  I managed to watch only 61 movies last year, one less than 2012 and my second consecutive year under 100.  Again, many things contributed to this, chiefly the insane amount of TV I’ve been watching and the awful amount of time I spend either at work or getting to and from work.

Here’s a look back at the first 50 movies I did manage to watch last year and what recollection, if any, I have of them. The films are listed in the order I saw them.

The Wedding Planner (2001)
A Jennifer Lopez throwback to start off the year.

Red Riding Hood (2011)
This was not a good movie.

Safe House (2012)
This also was not a good movie. I’m not getting the year started right.

Les Misérables (2012)
A work outing is the only reason I saw this film.

American Reunion (2012)
Sometimes you can go home again. And sometimes you shouldn’t.

Sherlock Holmes: A Game Of Shadows (2011)
Robert Downey Jr. returns as the great British detective.

Young Adult (2011)
Charlize Theron and Patton Oswalt team up for this strong tale.

Compliance (2012)
I streamed this disturbing picture on the iPad.

For A Good Time, Call… (2012)
A surprisingly good comedy.

Apollo 18 (2011)
Not good at all.

Battleship (2012)
As a fan of boardgame-based films, this one wasn’t particularly good, but not as bad as expected.

House At The End Of The Street (2012)
Jennifer Lawrence puts in her obligatory horror film.

Hit & Run (2012)
The Dax Shepard/Kristen Bell production was better than it had any right to be.

Wanderlust (2012)
Paul Rudd and Jennifer Aniston team up in their latest, nondescript romcom.

Men In Black 3 (2012)
What was I just saying about going to the well one too many times?

My Week With Marilyn (2011)
Michelle Williams did not make a very convincing Marilyn Monroe.

Ted (2012)
A surprisingly charming movie given the crassness of Seth MacFarlane.

Just Go With It (2011)
A decent entry from Adam Sandler, something you don’t see much of anymore.

Carolina (2003)
Julia Stiles tries to be normal while surrounded by a crazy family.

Chernobyl Diaries (2012)
Wacky kids look for an adventure in a Russian wasteland.

Breakfast At Tiffany’s (1961)
4 years after seeing the play in London’s West End, I finally saw the movie.

Don’t Panic It’s Organic (2011)
A short that doesn’t have much to offer other than a topless scene by Emma Caulfield.

Piranha 3DD (2012)
The first was a surprisingly well done horror comedy. This sequel was not.

Reflections (2009)
I don’t have a clue what this one was about.

50/50 (2011)
Joseph Gordon-Levitt fights cancer with humor.

Premium Rush (2012)
Joseph Gordon-Levitt goes for an exciting bike ride.

The Bourne Legacy (2012)
Can you have a Bourne movie without Jason Bourne? Yes. Should you? No.

Star Trek Into Darkness (2013)
A slight misstep by JJ Abrams by trying to remake Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan.

Iron Man 3 (2013)
The first follow up to the Avengers has Iron Man feeling the after effects of the battle in New York.

Argo (2012)
Ben Affleck’s Oscar winner about the rescue of American hostages in Iran.

Looper (2012)
Joseph Gordon-Levitt grows up to be Bruce Willis.

Zero Dark Thirty (2013)
Jessica Chastain leads the hunt for Osama Bin Laden.

Texas Chainsaw (2013)
A direct sequel of the original film, despite occurring 40 years later.

Man Of Steel (2013)
I did have some issues with the latest reboot of the Superman series, but overall it was a decent film.

Hansel & Gretel Get Baked (2013)
The classic fairy tale gets a drug-fueled makeover.

The Perks Of Being A Wallflower (2012)
The first film I saw this year featuring the lovely and talented Emma Watson.

Silver Linings Playbook (2012)
The film that got Jennifer Lawrence an Academy Award.

The Bling Ring (2013)
The second film I saw this year featuring the lovely and talented Emma Watson.

ATM (2012)
A psychopath attacks people trapped in an ATM vestibule.

The Evil Dead (1983)
My first time seeing the horror classic.

Paranormal Activity 4 (2012)
The latest installment in this tired franchise.

Absentia (2011)
After being declared dead, a missing man returns, but has changed for the worse.

Warm Bodies (2013)
Love turns zombies back into humans.

Sleepaway Camp (1983)
A lame slasher film that is somewhat redeemed only by the outlandish reveal at the end.

Insidious (2011)
A family deals with the possession of their child while facing the truth of the past.

Rise Of The Planet Of The Apes (2011)
Probably not the best choice for my first exposure to the Apes franchise.

Spring Breakers (2013)
Not really the movie I expected at all. Only worth watching for all the bikini shots of Selena Gomez, Ashley Benson, and Vanessa Hudgens.

Mama (2013)
Jessica Chastain takes in family that may bring a strange force with them.

Doctor Who (1996)
In the aftermath of the Doctor’s 50th, I watched the FOX made-for-TV movie from 1996 that was the only appearance of the 8th Doctor.
