Midseason Review – Tuesdays

Continuing our look back my thoughts of the new television season from September.

7:00

No Ordinary Family – While I’m sure this Fantastic Four/The Incredibles ripoff will be horrible (based solely on the incessant advertising at MLB stadiums), I will give it a shot for Julie Benz.

It isn’t great, but it is better than I feared.  Autumn Reeser has been a surprise wellspring of hot geekiness.

Life Unexpected – This little show surprised me last year when it was much better than it should have been.  Season 2 promises that the love triangle between Cate, Baze, and Ryan will come to an end, which was an overused plot in season 1.

The second season, which comes to an end tonight, has been somewhat disappointing.  It isn’t bad, and they have stayed away from the big triangle, but they have replaced it by giving Lux more typical teen-soap drama and copying the sleeping-with-your-teacher plot from Pretty Little Liars.

Raising Hope – What happens if you take the white trash elements from My Name Is Earl but without the natural warmth that was Jason Lee?  You get this show.  It wasn’t a total loss, but it is on a short leash.

I’ll give it this, the show has some heart and has improved.  That said, the Cloris Leachman character really serves no purpose besides trying to become the next Betty White.

8:30

Running Wilde – I don’t know what it is, but Will Arnett just does not work for me.  There’s something about him the just rubs me the wrong way.  On the other hand, I greatly enjoy the work of Keri Russell.  The pilot did not impress, but I’ll probably stick with it for awhile since the competition is light at this time.

I don’t think this has been officially cancelled yet, but it may as well have been.  Keri Russell deserves better.

The Good Wife – A solid performer from last season.  Never really good, but no serious missteps.

I stand corrected, this show has been and continues to be really good.

Parenthood – I remember liking the movie years ago, and the cast is filled with actors I usually enjoy, so I gave this show a chance when it premiered last spring.  It was good enough to stick with, but it does seem to drag at times.

I’m not sure what it is about this show.  I enjoy it enough when I watch it, but seeing it show up on the DVR never makes me want to watch it.

Detroit 1-8-7 – This was an iffy choice to begin with and the pilot really didn’t do much for me.  It will probably need to knock it out of the park this week to continue.

Other people may be onboard, but not me.  I’m not sure I even gave it the second week.
