Midseason Review – Sundays

We continue our annual look back at my thoughts on the new fall season plus any new offering coming soon on Sunday night.

7:00

God Friended Me – What if you took last season’s Kevin (Probably) Saves The World and add in social media?  Then you probably get this show.

I am a sucker for this type of show and Brandon Michael Hall and Violett Beane have tremendous chemistry.

Supergirl – The CW expands to a new night, and moves one of their DC hits to kick off the festivities.

A season-long story on xenophobia that echoes the feelings of the current administration.

8:00

Charmed – A reboot of the old WB hit, replacing the Halliwell sisters with a new collection of witches.

I watched the first episode and felt like I didn’t need to go back for more.

Shameless – Season 9 of the show started a few weeks back.

The show premiered while I was in Europe last fall and I’ve yet to catch up.

Ray Donovan – The show returns for its sixth season at the end of October.

Yeah, I haven’t watched this yet either.

Doctor Who – The 11th season kicks off with a new show runner and a new Doctor, Jodie Whitaker.

The new doctor finished her first series of adventures, which I think was a success.

Camping – Jennifer Garner and David Tennant team up for this adaptation of the British comedy.

Eh, a decent enough way to spend a half hour.

Post Mortem – House Of Lies

house-of-liesLast month, Showtime announced that the fifth season of House of Lies, which concludes tonight, will be its last.  Starring Don Cheadle and Kristen Bell as the leaders of a team of management consultants, the show satirized a corner of the business world that, at the time the show started, was very much affecting me at the office.  Because of that, I had a certain appreciation for the ridiculousness of the show and how much it mirrored real life.

The stars of the show are sure to land on their feet, with Don Cheadle continuing to portray Rhodey in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and Kristen Bell popping up on NBC’s fall schedule.  Their underlings are also likely to enjoy future success.

2015 Emmy Awards – Comedy

Emmy_statueWith the Emmy Awards scheduled for Sunday night, here are my predictions for the awards for Comedy shows.  I most likely have seen most of these shows, so, unlike my annual Oscar predictions, I will not mostly be going on gut feel and word of mouth, but will have a somewhat informed decision.

Modern Family

Parks and Recreation

Silicon Valley

Transparent

Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt

Veep

Modern Family won last year and would seem to be the obvious choice here, since the voters love it.  But Veep is certainly my dark horse candidate, so I’ll go with that.

Outstanding Actress In A Comedy

Edie Falco, Nurse Jackie

Lisa Kudrow, The Comeback

Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Veep

Amy Poehler, Parks and Recreation

Amy Schumer, Inside Amy Schumer

Lily Tomlin, Grace and Frankie

Julia Louis-Dreyfus won this award the past two years, and I see no reason why she won’t repeat again this year.

Outstanding Actor In A Comedy

Anthony Anderson, Black-ish

Don Cheadle, House of Lies

Louis CK, Louie

Will Forte, The Last Man on Earth

Matt LeBlanc, Episodes

William H. Macy, Shameless

Jeffrey Tambor, Transparent

Jim Parsons brought home the award last year for his role as Sheldon on The Big Bang Theory, but managed to not be nominated this year.  My guess is that Jeffrey Tambor takes home the trophy for Amazon’s hit series.

The Big Bang Theory

Modern Family

Veep

The sentimental favorite would be the final season of 30 Rock, but my feeling is it will end up being one of the two critical darlings, Louie or Girls.  I’m going to go with Louie, as there may be a backlash against Girls and Lena Dunham.

I think this category is where 30 Rock gets celebrated and creator, writer, and star Tina Fey will take home the statue.

Jason Bateman, Arrested Development

Louis CK, Louie

Don Cheadle, House of Lies

Matt LeBlanc, Episodes

Jim Parsons, The Big Bang Theory

While I can see Jason Bateman pulling an upset, I think the Netflix-based release of Arrested Development will work against him here.  My guess is Jim Parsons takes home the hardware for his role on the top rated comedy on television.
