2016 Emmy Awards – Comedy

Emmy_statueWith the Emmy Awards scheduled for Sunday night, here are my predictions for the awards for Comedy shows.  I most likely have seen most of these shows, so, unlike my annual Oscar predictions, I will not mostly be going on gut feel and word of mouth, but will have a somewhat informed decision.

Outstanding Comedy

Black-ish

Master of None

Modern Family

Silicon Valley

Transparent

Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt

Veep

Veep won last year and would seem to be a good choice to repeat, so I’ll go with that.

Outstanding Actress In A Comedy

Ellie Kemper, Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt

Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Veep

Laurie Metcalf, Getting On

Tracee Ellis Ross, Black-ish

Amy Schumer, Inside Amy Schumer

Lily Tomlin, Grace and Frankie

Julia Louis-Dreyfus won this award the past three years, and I see no reason why she won’t repeat again this year.

Outstanding Actor In A Comedy

Anthony Anderson, Black-ish

Aziz Ansari, Master of None

Will Forte, The Last Man on Earth

William H. Macy, Shameless

Thomas Middleditch, Silicon Valley

Jeffrey Tambor, Transparent

Jeffrey Tambor brought home the award last year for his gender-bending role on Amazon’s hit series.  My guess is that Aziz Ansari rides the same wave of good feelings to take home the trophy for his Netflix series.

Outstanding Supporting Actress In A Comedy

Anna Chlumsky, Veep

Gaby Hoffman, Transparent

Allison Janney, Mom

Judith Light, Transparent

Kate McKinnon, Saturday Night Live

Niecy Nash, Getting On

I don’t have much of a strong feeling one way or the other, so I’m going with Kate McKinnon, whose star seems to be on the rise.

Outstanding Supporting Actor In A Comedy

Louie Anderson, Baskets

Andre Braugher, Brooklyn Nine-Nine

Tituss Burgess, Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt

Ty Burrell, Modern Family

Tony Hale, Veep

Keegan-Michael Key, Key & Peele

Matt Walsh, Veep

This is a tough one.  The 2 Veep stars are likely to cancel each other out, meaning Tony Hale won’t repeat.  While I’d love for Tituss Burgess to win, I don’t see that happening.  I’m going to go with Andre Braugher, who has won before for previous roles.

Outstanding Guest Actress In A Comedy

Christine Baranski, The Big Bang Theory

Tina Fey and Amy Poehler, Saturday Night Live

Melora Hardin, Transparent

Melissa McCarthy, Saturday Night Live

Laurie Metcalf, The Big Bang Theory

Amy Schumer, Saturday Night Live

Sadly, I already know who won this award, so rather than pretend otherwise, I’ll go along with the Academy and give it to Tina Fey and Amy Poehler for their co-hosting gig on SNL.

Outstanding Guest Actor In A Comedy

Larry David, Saturday Night Live

Tracy Morgan, Saturday Night Live

Martin Mull, Veep

Bob Newhart, The Big Bang Theory

Peter Scolari, Girls

Bradley Whitford, Transparent

Again, this award was given out last weekend, so I already know that Peter Scolari already took home the trophy.
