Entering its 8th, and last, season, this is a show in desperate need of a change. I’ve never been one of those people who felt that the show needed to introduce the title mother in order to make the show worth while, it has started to feel that the writers and producers are treading water while waiting to bring the mother on board. That could give the show enough juice to energize not just this season, but any possible future ones as well.

As it turns out, this is not the final season for HIMYM. Which means they will likely continue to tread water for another year.

Bones – Emily Deschanel and David Boreanaz returned last week for the 8th season with a move to Mondays, taking over the House timeslot.

At this point, Bones is, to paraphrase Dennis Green, the show we thought it was.

8:00

2 Broke Girls – In some ways, this was one of the more disappointing series to debut last season. Kat Dennings and Beth Behrs are both talented actresses who could use better material. Hopefully the writers and producers spent the summer focusing on what worked last year and got rid of the base racial stereotypes that tended to drag things down.

The second season has improved somewhat, but the show still tends to go for the lowbrow laughs at every opportunity.

The Mob Doctor – The first new show of the night that is getting a chance from me. The premiere, which aired last week, was not great, so it might not be long for this world and I don’t think I’ll be sticking around for long.

And I didn’t even make it to the second episode and hardly anyone else did either. Fox put the show out of its misery early.

9:00

Hawaii Five-0 – This continues to be a fun little popcorn show that somehow manages to be more entertaining than it should be.

Nothing new to report here. Again, the show is what it is. Nothing more, nothing less.

Revolution – NBC’s latest attempt at a big mythology show puts us 13 years in the future where something has caused electricity to vanish. The pilot debuted last week to better-than-average reviews, so I’ll be giving this one a shot.

Somehow this turned in to something of a hit for NBC. It’s not bad, but it certainly isn’t great. It’s gone on hiatus for a few months, so hopefully there will be some retooling going on.

Castle – Somehow this fun little procedural with the will-they-or-won’t-they love story has turned in to one of my favorite shows. Last season ended with Castle and Beckett finally hooking up, so the status quo will be changed this year.

The hookup of Castle and Beckett has thus far managed to avoid the Moonlighting curse, although last week’s episode did plant the seeds for the inevitable break up that will keep them apart for an indeterminate period of time before the ultimately end up together again.

New and returning shows of note include the Kevin Bacon starring The Forgotten on Fox, about a retired FBI agent who comes back to once again take down the serial killer he stopped years before, Bunheads, the spiritual sequel to Gilmore Girls, and Continuum, a Syfy import from England starring Rachel Nichols.

Day 2 of our look back at my thoughts on the new fall television season and what is new for the winter and spring. 7:00 How I Met Your Mother –
