\"\"<\/a>The Baseball Writers of America have announced the finalists for their awards for the just completed baseball season, which will be announced next week. \u00a0It is a good bet that few of my original\u00a0predictions<\/a>\u00a0for the winners will be accurate. \u00a0Hopefully, these new predictions will be slightly better, especially since I\u2019ll have a 33% chance of being right.<\/p>\n

American League<\/h3>\n

Most Valuable Player:<\/strong> Yordan Alvarez, Aaron Judge, Shohei Ohtani<\/p>\n

Had Shohei Ohtani not had the season he had last year, he would easily walk away with this award.\u00a0 But, as they say, familiarity builds, if not contempt, at least complacency. So Aaron Judge, who broke the American League home run record, will take home the prize.<\/p>\n

Cy Young Award:<\/strong> Dylan Cease, Alek Manoah, Justin Verlander<\/p>\n

Justin Verlander returned from Tommy John surgery at age 39 and won 18 games while posting a 1.75 ERA.\u00a0 Seems a little suspicious to my eyes, but he will easily take home this award.<\/p>\n

Manager of the Year:<\/strong> Terry Francona, Brandon Hyde, Scott Servais<\/p>\n

As usual, I didn\u2019t make any predictions for this award prior to the season.\u00a0 Scott Servais should have won this award last year, but I don’t think he will make up for it this year.\u00a0 Brandon Hyde led the Orioles to a 31-game improvement over the previous year and their first winning season since 2016.\u00a0 That should get him the award.<\/p>\n

Rookie of the Year:<\/strong> Steven Kwan, Julio Rodriguez, Adley Rutschman<\/p>\n

Another award I didn\u2019t predict prior to the season.\u00a0 While all three had very successful seasons, my guess would be that Julio Rodriguez brings this award back to Seattle.<\/p>\n

National League<\/h3>\n

<\/p>\n

<\/span>Most Valuable Player:<\/strong> Paul Goldschmidt, Nolan Arenado, Manny Machado<\/p>\n

Assuming the two Cardinals do not split the vote, my guess is Paul Goldschmidt gets the award.<\/p>\n

Cy Young Award:<\/strong> Sandy Alcantara, Max Fried, Julio Urias<\/p>\n

Alcantara went 14-9 and posted a 2.28 ERA while posting a league-high 228 2\/3 innings while tossing six complete games.\u00a0 That is unheard of in today’s game and should earn him this award.<\/p>\n

Manager of the Year:<\/strong> Dave Roberts, Buck Showalter, Brian Snitker<\/p>\n

There’s no plucky underdog here.\u00a0 The Dodgers ran away and hid with the NL West, so he would be as good a bet as any,<\/p>\n

Rookie of the Year:<\/strong> Brendan Donovan, Michael Harris II, Spencer Strider<\/p>\n

Another case where two players from the same team have the potential to split the vote, but I’m going to go with Spencer Strider, who struck out 202 batters, the most by a rookie pitcher in a decade.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
